how do I make a threaded off-roster pistol barrel compliant before moving to CA

    Hello Cal Guns.

I have a question and would love some advice

I recently moved to VA- im out here for 4 years before i come back to CA(currently in med school) . Taking this opporunity to purchase some off-roster handguns. I recently just purchased a Walther PDP with a Threaded barell (among other things) . I realize that this barrel would create a legal issue if/when I bring it back to california.

What would the cheapest or most cost-effective approach to making the threaded barell "CA legal"? obviously i could just buy a different barell- but im wondering if there's an easier or cheaper approach here that would allow me to keep the barrell while maintaining most if not all of its functionality.

Thank you in advance for your help!

I suppose you could pin and weld a thread protector on, but the question is "why"? Just buy a barrel that is not threaded, and leave the threaded one outside CA. Unless you can do all the work and yourself and have the equipment, you won't save any money pinning and welding. Not sure what you mean by this "allow me to keep the barrell while maintaining most if not all of its functionality." If the functionality you wnat to keep is the ability to put a suppressor on it, well, I think you know how dangerous that is.

The mere possession of a threaded barrel is not illegal, as long as it is not in the gun. So one option is to keep the threaded barrel, and buy an extra barrel without threads for use in the pistol. Another option is to have a gun smith remove the threads. This is permanent though.

Purchasing a non threaded barrel is what my son did after he single shot exempted his PPQ Navy.

I bought an HK with a threaded barrel and simply had a non-threaded barrel installed before the firearm was delivered to CA. Pinning a thread protector has to be permanent under CA laws, and also makes complete disassembly impossible for many firearms. There is no way to meet the CA permanent requirement and retain the original functionality other than swapping the barrel.

How about taking a bench grinder and grinding the threads smooth..

Thatโ€™s acceptable in the ghetto, but would not retain the original functionality that the OP wants.
