Generally I wouldn’t call it a bad smell. I wouldn’t call it a good one either especially if it’s a rank boar. But I’m talking about regular wild hog smell. In conversation with my hunting partners and guided hunters this topic has come up a hundred times. To this day I have yet to get a general consensus on what a wild hog scent smells like. Everyone agrees it’s a familiar scent. Something that’s generally comparable to something else but nobody has really been able to put a finger on.

To me it’s a combination of let’s say maple syrup and a hint of used motor oil.

What say you hog hunters? What does a wild hog smell like?

That's funny. I've tried describing the smell of a buck to my girlfriend. I couldn't. Then I shot one this previous season and let her smell the leg and said "THAT's the smell." and I am confident she will never forget it either.

I had a buddy that would smell their breath and be able to tell if it was going to be sausage or cut & wrapped.

Those nasty balls that are in my pic are the reason they taste a little rank.

The worse smell on them is when you hit a puss pocket under the skin

Ask somebody to imagine the sour version of the smell of a wet dog, mixed with dried cow poop.

Deer have a musk smell to me.

For me, bull elk smell like Limburger cheese, deer and antelope a strong musky odor.

The odor of all of the deer family varies depending on the status of the rut. Rank during the rut, but not at all rank if well before or after the rutting season.

                                Smells like
rotting grass mixed with damp muddy earth mixed with dank urine and manure.

My hunting buddy did a gut shot on a sow so she smelled like blood and pig poop which overpowered any normal smell.

I went to school at UC Davis and my dorm was down wind from some of the experimental barns. If you're a city boy, you'd better learn to tolerate the smell of cows and sheep. There was one dorm nearby the pig pens. Those were horrible in the summer!
I'm not having a glass of wine, I'm having SIX. It's called a tasting and it's classy.
