    Wine anyone??

So much for the sole focus being self defense. I guess it is now, whatever we can do to make money to "finish" the resort. From today's email...

If you enjoy a great glass of wine, appreciate wines from the Napa Sonoma Valley, and want to serve a wine from a wine maker who is a patriot just like you, then the Front Sight Wine Club is calling your name!

Front Sight has formed a wine club just for you and your fellow members who will not only enjoy the great Napa Sonoma Valley wine, olive oil and vinegars you purchase from our wine club, but will also enjoy even more the discussions that result when serving these uniquely labeled wines to your friends and family.

A significant portion of the proceeds of the wine, olive oil and vinegar sales go directly to Front Sight and will support all of our activities.
Purchase today for immediate shipment to your door at www.frontsight.com/wineclub

If you go to the Lodge Winery website, the prices are the same as the "wine club".

Question regarding the HCMP ambi drill. When I took the class (private), the instructor had me do the finger straight, look/move for the emergency reload. There are a couple FS videos of the drill on youtube where the students do not look and move. What is required for the emergency reload part of the ambi drill?

From today forward all items that used to be available with your credits can no longer be purchased that way. You use a combination of credits and cash now.

Targets are $34.99 as before. Now you pay $18 cash and $16.99 in credits. Basically you pay retail and give them back some credits for each item.

Bill Cookson says this will allow them to replenish the shelves.

I’m not complaining but want people to be aware of the change.

If the fun gun shoot has changed I will post that too.
I took 2-day Handgun Skill Builder Private Training Sat/Sun 21-22 September (-19, Graduate, missed DG by 6 points). Will try again next month.

Bought a dozen-or-so rolls of targets while I was there. Thinking now I should have either bought a few dozen rolls or just cleaned it out. Targets were about the only thing I was using the credits. That and the occasional dry-fire manual.

Should have got a set or two of the manuals for family members while could still use credits only.

This was my first Private Training. Enjoyed it very much. First day was pretty intense as compared to taking the class with others as the instructor can pay full attention and catches everything. Which was good because I needed the corrections. Second day was better and more fun as after sleeping on it the instruction from the previous day sank in and I was doing much better on day two.

I ran Winchester M22 and Remington thunderbolt. The only failure was induced by pushing up on the slide release. Not the ammo fault just training on proper grip.

From the official FS HCM rules regarding the Ambi drill:

"Failure to clear the Emergency Reload with proper technique (finger straight, look/move, index a new magazine, drop the empty, insert the new magazine, run the slide) will result in a procedural penalty."

In real time, the look is done during the move. It does not have to be a "stop and over exaggerated look", but it has to be a perfect emergency reload by the book.

The is no cutting corners on the HCM test. Six seconds is plenty of time to do the Ambi drill, the key is good TECHNIQUE.

I agree that the look-n-move needs to happen; but for me the Ambi Drill is the absolute hardest of them all. Its extremely rare for me to shoot it -0. -8 or 9 wouldn't be uncommon for me.

My practice regimen has been no-existent for nearly a year now...I'm not sure when I'll be able to pick it up again...

Anyone take the new 4 day rifle marksmanship class? I'm planning on taking it and I'm looking for some tips. Considering running my tikka t3 30-06. But 260 rounds over four days in a light rifle might be tough.

The pace of the class is much slower than other Front Sight courses but in a good way. I would highly recommend doing this course before Practical Rifle as this is about accuracy. Some recommendations if you choose to take the course.

Caliber - .223 is OK as long as you can shoot 69grn and up. Not worth shooting 55 grn due to wind out there.

.224 Valkarie, 6.5 Grendel, 6.5 Creedmore, and 308 are better.

Know your dopes or have a rough idea out to 350. 50 or 25 yard zero works well for this course. Write down your dope. Can be referenced on the test.

Rifle - Don't bring a heavy rifle. You will suffer off hand at 35 and 50. You may have trouble at 75 & 100 due to not being able to use a rest. Under 10 lbs is a good weight.
Shoot your rifle before you go!. More than 500 rounds. Saw guys fight extraction issues and ejection issues because they didn't try their gear before they went.

Scope - 4x power and up is good. Can be done with a 3x9 but higher magnification is a plus. Just want the lower magnification at 35 and 50. I was able to do it with 6.5x but it sucked. Make sure your stock fit well and the scope height is right! Have a scope with reference marks as it helps for elevation and windage. This course is all hold over rather than dialing your scope in. Have a level. Helps a lot for the longer distances.

Sling - Have a good sling with strong mounts. Watched a 4K+ rifle bounce off the ground. There was a collective ouch by all. Practice with your sling getting into position.

Bi-pod - Have one with feet that will dig into the dirt. Personally I shot off my backpack and had no issues. Actually I liked it better and left the bi-pods off the rifle.

No shooting mats are allowed. Have knee and elbow pads for the gravel. Bring some goggles for real windy days.
Center to center on the large targets is 12". Center target to side target is 7".

                              0 - 2 down is DG
                              3-4 down is Graduate
                              5 or more is Certificate.
Only 18 shots for the final.

Lastly, don't be married to your set up. Be willing to make some changes such as sling position, body position, stock set up, etc.

Planning on making a few minor changes and then trying the class again soon. I learned a lot!

If you don't have a bipod, get one. There is a 125gr factory load out there. I don't know how accurate it is in your rifle or at 350yds, but your shoulder will thank you. It's either that or a Past Recoil pad.

There will be dust all over everything at the end of the day. A shower and clean clothes when you get back from class will make a big difference.

Knee and elbow pads can be found on Amazon or Big 5 Sports. There are rocks all over the ground.
