    plated vs jacketed?

i had a recent discussion with a shooter/fellow reloader the other day...

    told him about my loads

    9mm luger
    unique powder
    and BERRYS PLATED hallow points

he sort of gasped when i had said plated bullets and he tried to explain how i should stay aways from them??

im still green to reloading... so i tried to listen but the guy just wasnt making sense??

can you guys sum up for me why plated bullets are so bad? or if they are at all??

I personally prefer jacketed or lead, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with plated.

You would do well to ignore any other advice he might offer.

I love plated and use them extensively. I've never used plated hollow point, all I have ever used are either round or flat nose. The only issue/limitation I know is you should keep the velocity under 1200 fps and pay attention to your crimp as you may crimp too much to where the plating pulls off when fired.
I've never had any issues and while I like jacketed bullets, for plinking, my wallet does not so I use plated.

Plated shouldn't be pushed past 1500fps or so. Generally, universal won't push the bullet that fast so you should be fine.

However if you we're to start shooting 357mag in a rifle, you can easily get past 1500fps and so jacketed is recommended.

As clownpuncher said, keep them under 1200 fps and easy on the crimp. Plated is all I shoot. The prices I get them for are only a few dollars more than lead. I have shot thousands and have never had a problem.

Berry's and Xtreme, take your pick. I'm loading Xtreme due to the last Calguns B.

I'm currently reloading .45 acp with xtreme 200gr rn plated and they work very well with zero issues.
I have previously used Berry's 200gr hallow point plated and they also work very well but have a shorter col then rn. I must note they punch holes in paper targets like a wad-cutter does so the hits are easily seen from a distance.

Most plated bullet manufactures state to use lead bullet data because the plated bullets are not up for fmj velocities. With .45 acp I have know problems but I'm sure not shooting over 900fps. I would wouldn't load fast +p rounds in 9mm with plated bullets. Maybe keep it under 1000fps to be a little safer.
I fear paper cuts far more than firearms.

There was a time when you could save significant amounts of money by buying plated vs jacketed, even buying jacketed from Montana Gold or Precision Delta.
However, unless they have gotten much better in the last 5 years, plated totally suck in terms of accuracy compared to jacketed or good cast lead bullets.
Since I can buy 2000 jacketed bullets from Precision Delta or a case from Montana Gold for the same amount of money and be assured of superlative accuracy, plated are not on my buying list.
My only "complaint" about others using plated is whether they have ever tried jacketed or good cast bullets. If so, and they are some how getting just as good accuracy with plated, then they have made a wise choice for themselves.
I just don't understand buying plated when jacketed are running the same price and are so much more accurate...
I do understand, though, that you can find plated at your local gunshop for a lot less than Hornady or Speer jacketed, but that is for a very limited shopping universe.
Even if all you do is blast away, I would still vote for good cast bullets for training and then use jacketed for action pistol competition.
However, there is no real risk in terms of safety. Just be sure that you crimp doesn't cut the plating and that you stay below 1200 fps.
If they weren't safe, they wouldn't be able to sell them.
