Can magnetic lead-core ammo still cause fires?

90% of the surplus 7.62x54R out there is magnetic even if it's lead core, because it has a small amount of steel in the jacket, or the jacket is made of copper-washed steel, etc. I understand the reason we can't use steel-core ammo here in socal is because there's a risk for fires... does a lead core round with the small amount of steel like we see in surplus 7.62x54R still present a risk for fires? Am I OK to use it on BLM land? Thanks

BLM and USFS are concerned about sparks from the steel cores hitting rocks and lighting fires. Steel jacket is no different in this respect.
If a magnet sticks to it, I would not use it on public lands.

Bummer. If we make sure the firing line/target area is clear of any brush, might we be good to go, or should we still not use it?

I think most ranges don't allow it, but if you go out to some public/private land it might be good. I've got 800 rounds coming to me and will definitely need a place to use it, hah.

Think it through - it would be MORE likely to do so because if it's lead core but still magetic, then it must have a mild steel jacket, and THAT's what strikes sparks when striking rocks.

funny thing is, any FMJ will cause a spark when it hits a solid object like a rock, etc...

Some guy a couple a years ago started a fire shooting and ended up burning down 20 houses. Not worth it.
If you can't shoot good, at least look good shooting

I dont see how this is an issue as long as you dont leave the fire to burn. A little spark isn't instantly going to spread into an inferno unless you are shooting in an oil field? Stamp out the fire before it spreads. If you are worried, bring a fire extinguisher.

It makes sparks, try it at dusk sometime. There are places and times of the year to not use it, just for common sense. At any rate, there isn't a prohibition on magnetic ammo on BLM land.
