Best kimber ammo and mag combos

Hey fellow calgunners, I just picked up a kimber custom II and went to the range yesterday. I used 3 different mags, a McCormick, the factory kimber and another aftermarket mag, brand unknown. I was using Remington UMC fmj 230 gr ammo, and I had 2 FTF's. One with the McCormick mag and the other with the unknown mag. Both were on the final round of the clip. I searched around a bit and didn't see any topics on this, but I'm on my iPhone so bear with me lol. I was curious what kinds of ammo and clips have you had success with? Both rounds appeared to get jammed up on the feed ramp with the actual bullet portion almost facing straight up, all I had to so was pull the slide back once more and it popped right into the chamber. No biggie but I don't want that to happen anymore, because that's the last thing I need to happen in a HD scenario lol. So, what mag/ammo combo has worked well for you?

I've only tried so far the factory Kimber mag (complete junk), CMC Power Plus mags, and the Kim-Pro Tac mags.

The CMC Power + mags are nice when they work, but I sometimes get FTF's with them (jamming on the feed ramp). The Kim-Pro Tac mags have run 100% flawless, and I've put a few hundred rounds through it using Magtech, Federal, and PMC 230gr FMJ ammo. But then, I'm still breaking the gun in as I still haven't put 500 rounds through my gun.

I haven't tried any Wilson mags, mainly because of the price and what I've read about the plastic followers. And at half the price of the Wilson mags, the Kim-Pro Tac mags work perfectly for me.

I have used Wilson and Checkmate mags exclusively. I have never had an issue with mags since I have made the change. They cost a bit more but I have not had problems in both my 1911's

I have a CDP-PRO that I have used wilson combat mags (47d) in for 9 years. It has always functioned flawlessly. So when I bought a Tactical custom 2 of course I bought wilson mags for it. Every 3 or 4 mag would have a ftf on the 7 round. I then went with Tripp cobra mags and have zero problems with the gun. I liked them so much that when I got a CDP ultra got Tripp mags for that also. It functions 100%. 1911s are mag finicky, but Tripp mags are the great equalizer, never meet a 1911 that did not like them.

My carry ammo is Remington Golden Saber, functions perfect in all my 1911s.

I only use Wilson Combat magazines since I upgraded from the original. Zero failures since.

I've had zero problems in mine with the act/novak mags as well as the metalform with the orange plastic follower.

Hmmm... Thx for the replys, I've been reading up and heard nothing but good things about the tripp mags. I'm going to try to polish the feed ramp up a bit, and use the same ammo I've been using, and see If that helps any. I was kind of awe struck that the McCormick mag had a FTF, but then again it happens. I've heard a couple things about the custom II feed ramp that leads me to believe polishing it may help out a bit. But then again I've only put 100 rounds through it all with the same ammo, so I may try some different ammo as well

those $8 "colt" branded mags that seem to litter the gun stores all around, are the best damn mags ive ever run across. ive used a handful of different brands, but for $8 and 100% reliability, my mind is made up.

For plinking, KimPro, Wilson, or CMC mags works fine.

If your life depended on it, I would suggest Tripp Cobramags.

Do not polish the feed ramp with a dremel. The dremel is the gun owner's worst enemy.

The fate of the wounded rest in the hands of the ones who apply the first dressing.

Leave the feed ramp alone and shoot the gun more.

+1. put 500 rounds through it. if it still is unreliable, SEND IT TO KIMBER!! you can very easily turn that nice pistol into a paperweight.

I have a handfull of those $8 GI mags I'll have to give them a shot. And I'm sorry I didn't clarify, the previous owner had put ~ 500 Rounds through it, so the count is up to about ~600. He said he never had a failure to feed which I believe so I was thinking it may have been the ammo I was using. I'm going to change that up before I touch it with the dremel. And I will take your guy's word for it and not touch it with the dremel :-)

I have never had a FTF with my Tripp Cobramags in my Kimber TLE custom II. For carry I have Ranger SXT.

Detail strip the slide and get a Popsicle stick and some chrome polish. Dip the stick in the polish and work the stick up and down the breachface for about 30 minutes. You want a mirror finish and keep in mind no metal is getting removed. You want all the machine marks off that surface. Do the same with the feed ramp. Clean the heck out of the firing pin and extractor hole making sure all of the polish is out. Next install a Wolf 18 1/2lb. recoil spring and put it back together. This will solve most of the feed problems on new 1911's that have a properly tuned extractor. This is quite a bit cheaper than a $60.00 Fed-Ex tag and is all Kimber will do to it.

I like that idea. I had been reading around and had also found that the wolff recoil spring is the way to go. So I'll have to order one this weekend.
