Why do people blacked/whited out their gun's serial number?

Why do people photoshopped out their guns' serial numbers when posting pics of their guns? What would happen if the serial numbers become public? Just curious.

    There is no rational reason.

If asked enough times.... you'll get the same thread over and over.

If some level of government had that information, what would they do with it? How would having that info benefit public safety? How would it benefit law enforcement?

I'd guess. To keep gun counterfeiters from copying serial numbers and paranoia
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Hosea 4:6

Because it's the internet. Who knows what people can do with serial #'s these days. Why risk it when it literally takes a minute to blackout the serial #.

Have any proof it's actually been done or is it merely folklore?

I always put on the tin foil hat my kids made for me whenever I log onto a gun forum. Especially a Commiefornia gun forum.

Seriously though, the less identifying info you put out the better, because you never know when it might be used. Once any info is out there you can NEVER get it back. So who knows what someone might use it for in the future, it is impossible to predict.
sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.
