Anyone Use the Savior Specialist Covert Rifle Bag?

I don’t know about you, but I very much miss the 5.11 COVRT M4 RIFLE CASE. It fit my 16” AR Rifles perfectly, and was as discrete as you could get. The SLING style strap took some getting used to, but over time I learned to appreciate it. I currently own three of them. As I have added more compact rifles to my collection, I have always wished I could order more, but they’ve been discontinued.

One feature I really appreciate is the small top pocket and larger bottom pocket which worked out great. In the smaller upper pocket, I stow a small tool kit, shooting glasses in a hard case, a magazine in an HSGI belt pouch, and hat. In the larger pocket I would stow a preconfigured gun belt (without the pistol in it of course), a Haley Strategic Micro Chest Rig with three magazines and mini-IFAK trauma kit, and some small AR zeroing targets. This setup ensures it works great as an everyday range bag and as a SHTF rifle bugout bag. Having one set up for each of the compact rifles I own ensures that if there every were an SHTF situation, every family member and close friend can take full advantage of the fact that I am a gun nut, especially if they are not. But mostly I do it just because I can and I dig the gear.

Recently I found a used 5.11 COVRT M4 SHORTY version of the bag for an AR pistol I built. It works great, but it is missing the smaller top pocket. Everything has to fit in the one large outer pocket. It works but is not as ideal. If these were more readily available, I probably buy more for my other AR pistols. Instead, I opted to use the GHOST GEAR APPARITION RIFLE BAG.

5.11 still makes a discrete rifle bag called the 5.11 LVC M4 RIFLE BAG that comes in various sizes and colors. I can’t explain why I don’t like it, but something about the look of it turns me off. It looks cheap to me. At least when compared to their previous solution. The shape, the solid color, just doesn’t appeal. I do like that it has two should straps instead of one. I have been very tempted to get one because I am sure the quality and functionality are there. I have just been keeping an eye out for something better. Am I wrong? Have you tried it and do you like it?

I could not find a video on this exact bag so here is a link to the 5.11 store instead: Quality Soft Gun Cases & Ammunition Storage | 5.11 Tactical®

There is a lot to like about the GREY GHOST GEAR APPARITION RIFLE BAG. Namely that like the 5.11 COVRT M4 BAG it looks nothing like a rifle bag. I like this idea because it keeps the neighbors from freaking out on range day, and it could be necessary in a real life SHTF scenario because we have no idea what the politics and situation during that event might be. Not advertising what is in the bag seems pretty useful to me. In some ways it is even better. It has two shoulder straps not just one for example. It also has some really cool layered pockets. Though I do admit I often get “lost” when opening a zipper and end up opening the wrong pocket. Another cool feature are the color options. You can get tactical colors, but you can also get some very wild color combinations that definitely do not scream “gun inside”. The downside is the bag only fits SBRs and AR Pistols, not full-size rifles. It is also very pricey. Too pricey.

Here is a video from Sage Dynamics on the Grey Ghost Apparition Bag. If you are not already subscribed to the Sage Dynamics channel I recommend doing so. His videos are great.

Today, while looking for a bag like this I came across a bag that looks shockingly and pleasantly similar. The SAVIOR SPECIALIST RIFLE BAG. They make two bags that go by the same name, so be sure to watch the video below so we are on the same page. The bag I like comes in a variety of sizes to fit SBRs, AR Pistols, and Full Size ARs. It has a similar pocket setup to the 5.11 COVRT M4 RIFLE BAG, the shape and styling of it looks like anything but a gun is inside, but the color selection could be better. The only colors that doesn’t necessarily look tactical would be Black or Grey. Some contrasting piping or detailing would go a long way to keeping these bags looking “discrete”. They have two shoulder straps that hide away and look to secure the rifle inside even more securely than the 5.11 predecessor. The best part of the bag is price. Which is cheaper that what 5.11 was charging and what Grey Ghost Gear currently charges. Now I will admit, there is not a huge amount of difference between this bag and 5.11’s current solution. But I do think it looks better, and for some reason does a better job and disguising what is inside.

Here is a link to buy one on Amazon (I have no affiliation with this seller and merely posting this for convenience to you): Amazon.com: Savior Equipment Specialist Series 30" 34" 38" Covert Tactical Gun Bag Backpack Soft Case

Of course, the downside to all of these solutions is that the more popular they become the more people know about them and the greater the chance someone will recognize them and know what is inside them. Defeating, in part, their purpose. But even so, I prefer them to a standard rifle case.

That said I do have larger square type discrete rifle cases from Bulldog that are riddled with molle straps and scream “rifle inside”. Mostly because until now I could not find anything more discrete. But also because rifles that large are not going to be confused with a skateboard or something innocuous, so what’s the point?

Does anyone have any firsthand experience with any of these bags and what did you think about them? Is there a Covert style bag you like better? Does the Covert concept even appeal to you?
