They can’t! It’s for each person’s integrity the oversee this happens. Luckily, the vast majority of gun owners are RESPONSIBLE, LAW ABIDING CITIZENS!

To the OP. I’m glad you do see we’re not a bunch of REBUKING OGERS, LOL!

Like I said, messages are difficult at times because we can’t hear the inflection of in each other’s voices. People like me have very little reason to be on these public firearms forums other than to share the things we are doing & discussion with other enthusiasts, and to help others through our experience. Myself for instance.., I’m 41, started firearms training lessons at age 12. Got into all other facets of firearms knowledge at certain points, starting right around ‘99. In 2014 I was 100% disabled in an accident, leaving my left arm/hand completely PARALYZED. Regardless, I’m still doing this stuff!(as I can because of pain). I LOVE working on, repairing & building pistols & rifles and machining parts. I LOVE reloading! And I genuinely LOVE helping others in person & on public forums! I love it so much, I do trigger jobs for FREE!

I have found that “most” firearms forums possess some very intelligent individuals, with a plethora of gun knowledge, and an eagerness to help. No difference here.

        Solidis,

I'll just throw my opinion out. I too have more than a few SKS, and they are also one of my favorite platforms, because you can mess around with them. If bought right, you can't loose.

As far as aftermarket furniture, I had/have rifles in ATI & Choate Drag, T6s, Ramline, Choate conventional, Timbersmith, ATI Monty, Butler Creek, and recently Shernic. The ATI Drag takes some Dremal work to function & look decent, is boat anchor heavy, but can be stable. I have one that's my "test mule" for any Khyber Pass handiwork. These are all rifles that had Bubbas imprint all over, or a numbers matching Paratrooper (done to save the stock furniture). On some of these weapons, I'm also running Mojo, Williams, & Tech sites, some in duplicate.

They all needed attention to fit, even in chiu furniture. PAX.

there is a couple things that are ok in my book

#1 the 1 inch butt extension so easy to install really helps doesnt take away the originality looks

#2 the bayonet bipod easy to install easy to revert it does have a slight bubba rating but it is useful if you need or want one

#3 tapco intrafuse gas tube great if you want to use a red dot when hand fitted it is stable enough for 50-100 yard consistancy and it reverts easily
it does have a high bubba factor though

          worthless items
          most receiver cover scope mounts
          ati monte carlo stock
ati dravonov stock (i had the choate and it was pretty good but it is redzone bubba factor)
          any twist on muzzle brakes
          ambi-safety
          tech-sites
          polymer fixed magazines
          detachable magazines

Lol, well the magazines are a "no go" in Cali anyway. Would defeat the purpose of the built.

Thanks for the input all, will update everyone once I decide on a direction to move in. Either way, I'm going into the decision with eyes more "wide open!"

Oh, on my Shernic build, I'm running a Tapco 10/20 (just because I can) with the mag release lever cut and pinned, so you have to disassemble the trigger group to remove the mag. The barrel's cut, and with the Ramline brake, the OAL is 30 9/16th". I left the front sight globe in case I need it down the road.

I traded some 59/66 furniture for the Shernic, the barreled receiver is from SARCO's $80 heap, the guts are spares I've accumulated.

Some day I'll post my Khyber Pass build photos. They're cool/fun/cheap rifles. PAX

I think the 10 round fixed magazine is part of the appeal and the robust reliability of the design. We all know the history of why it was designed with a fixed magazine even though detachable magazine fed rifles had already been well developed. The SKS can be reloaded VERY quickly with good quality stripper clips and a bit of practice. Even if it were CA legal to modify the weapon with detachable magazines, I still wouldn't bother. They are better as Boris built them.

I agree! The SKS is the Soviet homage to our beloved M1 Garand. Imagine...would you EVER want to change one of those to a detachable magazine?? Not a snowballs chance in Hell!

I know most who posted in this thread can vouch for this...

I found a mint Tula SKS stock in the Collectors Exchange for $50 and jumped on it. My project was to swap out a severely gouged up stock on a Chinese SKS. I considered changing the wood on the gas tube. The handguard on the gas tube was a little dinged up and had a hairline crack that runs about 1/3rd the length of the wood. At the end of the day I was not willing to risk mucking up the component trying to punch or drill out the ferule/keeper pin. The SKS barreled receiver dropped into the Tula stock with no issues...

No need to get into the sins of bubba...

I am not saying it can't be done (it can) but IMO swapping out the handguard would be a PITA...

Sounds like there are a fair number if purests on here!

Don't worry guys, I never intended to swap out the non-detachable magazine. It's a large part of why I decided to buy the SKS.

It is such a PITA to do that. It would almost be preferable to buy a replacement gas tube with an existing wood handguard and refinish that wood to match your stock.

Seems like the complete handguard/gas tube assembly was the lowest replaceable unit and wasn't meant to be repaired. Their arsenal gunsmiths likely disposed of it completely imo
