    Steyr AUG Questions

I am trying to get a featureless AUG.

I have some questions existing owners (or those who know AUG) may be able to answer. Just got off the phone with a dealer who specializes in CA compliant AUGs, and was told some odd things.

They are saying when they sell the CA-Compliant AUG - they weld the front grip in the up position. I'd rather not have the front grip at all. When I asked them if they could simply not attach it (instead of welding it) - they said its possible.

My question is - for those of you who know AUG, is it feasible to install/uninstall the front grip with basic tools (at the range)? My research online shows that its possible but involved due to internal grip spring (see here). I travel to AZ often to do some shooting there - and strip/reconfigure my rifles while there.

Is reattaching native grip something that can be done in the field?

Do you recommend a custom lower rail/grip setup? Why, why not?

Should I just get an extra barrel with native grip? (this seems like the easiest way although +500usd)

i would have recommended the Ratworx front rail with angle fore grip, but it seems that the PG replacement rail is no longer being made. see gowkings' post below

I've tried to replace the spring inside the PG before and you'll need some sort of hooked tool to reattach it. Doing what that video shows in reverse would actually be the easiest. If you can remember to bring those tools, I don't see why you couldn't install/uninstall when you need to

      3 Options:

      1) Go through the involved process of dealing with that spring attaching and removing the grip.

      2) Get a rail and use whatever vertical grip you want, like a QD one. Very pricey if you get the Steyr Arms tri-rail ($200+), not so much with the 20/20 rail: https://store.ratworxusa.com/product...fgr-auga3-2545

      3) Get a spare barrel and leave the grip off. Can also deal with the flash hider problem too, leaving a classic tulip and vertical grip AZ barrel and a CA legal config barrel. Much more expensive, but very flexible.

munkeeboi Thank you, I think I am going to go with rail/angled foregrip option as you suggest. Yeah, will need some kind of hook tool to pull the spring out in that case, doable but would rather have the rifle ready at all times.

HibikiR, yep, 2. will work for now. Going to try and convince the dealer to replace the 16" barrel with 20" (adapter + ar15 muzzle break). Not a fan of anything pinned and welded (and odd looking for no benefit).

Will get the 16" native barrel later.

        Thank you guys.

You want the dealer to sell the original 16" barrel, and then you plan to buy one later?? Just keep the original barrel.

There is a ca featureless model. Might be easier/cheaper to start with that and get a 16" barrel for AZ.

Which barrel is that with the Ratworx bipod? And is that muzzle device provided with the bipod?

That is the 24" with the Steyr LMG muzzle brake. the bipod does not come with any muzzle device.

True. it allows for a 24" barrel to sit in a rifle with a 36" OAL.

sorry for derailing your thread OP, but the Aug was meant to quick change barrels I kept my 16" barrel just for that purpose, search the bullpup forums for $300 barrels

longshot, but see if this guy still has it for sale for $275 http://bullpupforum.com/index.php?topic=13230.0

I never posted pics of the full rifle before. AUG courtesy of Audiophil2

The AUG grip spring is not difficult to manipulate if you have spring hook tools.
                              Brownells sells them.
