I have been toying with the idea of building a very simple and uncomplicated rifle for home defense, casual plinking and, of course, SHTF. Along with the concept of a KISS rifle, I have finally been forced to admit that my eyesight has deteriorated to the point that iron sights are no longer as effective as they used to be. While I am no fan of magnified optics on my rifles, I have come to appreciate the utility of a simple red dot sight.
So, I got busy this morning and changed around a little carbine that I have been shooting the snot out of lately. So far this rifle has been 100% reliable with any and all ammo I have run through it and it is pretty accurate out to 250-300 yards. I can't really see clearly much farther than that with my naked eyes to identify targets, so as far as I am concerned that is good enough.
Originally I had it set up with a C7 upper and triangle handguards, but to install a red dot pretty dictated that I convert over to a flattop. Except for the upper all the other parts I used were laying around in my parts boxes.
Surprisingly, this was one of the cheapest barrels I could find in this length. It is nitrided and was a mere $80 bucks from Midway. The red dot is a Vortex SPARC which oddly enough was spot on for windage and elevation at 100 yards right out of the box when I went out and sighted it in after assembly.

Even with the AAC M4-2000 mounted it is no longer than a standard AR carbine with a 16" barrel and a flash hider or brake.
