Actually this is what I had originally decided on at the end of last year... But I spent my gun budget on SSE pistols by year end thinking I can always get a bolt gun later as they weren't being legislated out of California at the time.

Now that I have money saved up again, I found out they are discontinued and parts etc are no longer supported by Sig going forward

I see a good number of votes for the savage, but nobody has really said anything about it...I have a savage 110 hunter in 7mm mag (non-accutrigger/non-accustock/non-bedded) and it's fine for hunting (1-2moa) but lacks the 1/4-1/2 moa accuracy I'm really itching for from a bench rifle.

Is the 308 with the precision stock that much more accurate?

Savage > Rem 700. Have both and both shoot very good, bet the Savage has a better stock trigger, no reason to replace and the action is better on the Savage out of the box. The Savege feeds nicer.
If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine.

I have a remington 5r. Leupold MK4 rings, and base, SWFA 3-15x44 SS scope. $1800 total. Getting a Timney 510 trigger next.

Best group is .343" at 100 yards with FGMM 168gr. Averages .4-.7 MOA. VERY impressive for a stock rifle because I'm a noobtastic range yokel. Also, I've only put about 75 rounds through it so far.

Highly recommend it as a good factory rifle you can grow into and upgrade as you see the need.

I understand the urge to not follow the herd, but sometimes the herd is right....

tactical & budget rarely go hand in hand - kinda like tactical bolt gun.....

Haven't priced them out lately, but what about Gap or surgeon rifles. 2k has got to get you into the custom market when talking bolt guns/ barreled actions

Here is another nice rifle that does not require a bunch of mods to be a great shooter. If you going to buy something that requires HEAVY modification just start from scratch and build from ground up rather than rebuild and waste money on what you bought. Some factory guns are as good as those that have been modified and you can spend all that extra money on Ammo, reloading equipment, optics, shooting accessories. All of theses things are needed not just desired for the wow! factor. Just an option and my observation from 40 years of shooting.

Yeah, not so much. That's closer to the 5-7k range. The action itself is 2k without stock or barrel etc

correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Winchester owned by FN making that similar to the SPR but with a different stock? I guess it would be closer to the FN TSR?

Same action yes, different configuration and can probably be had for less money.

Start with the Rem 700 and then modify the hell out of it.

The Tikka is nice if you want to buy off the shelf. I have not shot the FN but it seems like people like it.

Are you set on 308 and a factory gun? You might want to talk to one of the gunsmiths here like AR15barrels or kendog4570. I bet they can build you something nice for $2k. And there are a lot more interesting options than 308 if your first concern is accuracy to 600.

Set on 308. Trying to keep caliber commonality so I don't have to stock more calibers.

Not set on factory gun, just figured I'd get more bang for the buck that way, since I thought custom guns were more in the 5k range

Not a big fan of Shilen but they make complete rifles, actions or barreled actions for a decent price.http://www.shilen.com/productsCompleteRifles.html
