Springfield Armory 1911 TRP Operator review

When I went in to my usual shop to buy some ammunition this last September, on a whim I inquired if the owner had any "nice 1911's I can look at." He walks over to his safe and pulls out an unassuming white box. In it is a brand new Springfield Armory 1911 TRP Operator with the full rail. This is a rare find anywhere, but especially in stock at a local dealer's shop. I bought it on the spot and I'm happy to say the product has exceeded my expectations.

I got my CCW approval in September 2024 and was able to add the TRP to my permit before it was actually issued. I qualified with it and decided to get some training. I went out to North Carolina in February for a private pistol course with Pat McNamara, whom I've worked with a couple times before on other private courses. The TRP took about 700 rounds to break in, during which I experienced about 15-20 failures to feed/go into battery. After the first 700 rounds, it has been flawless. This thing is super accurate and super ergonomic-- I shot a 95 on a 25-yard bullseye. Puts my Glocks to shame-- even the Glock 20 10mm that was my go-to before this one. The TRP has full night sights, full rail, and a nice overall configuration. Great value at around $2k.

I rate the TRP Operator a 9.5 out of 10. The reasons for the 0.5 off a perfect score are (1) the sandpaper-textured grips absolutely shred my clothes, and (2) it's difficult to find holsters and accessories for this thing, which means I had to get custom holsters.

Here is the raw video of day two and day three from my North Carolina trip:

Day one had the wrong settings and all the footage ended up in slow motion with no audio. I will post my 25-yard bullseye performance for proof, though. Haha.

I like this one so much that when I went back to the shop, the owner said he had three more TRP's that he snapped up from his distributor the instant they appeared. I bought two more as gifts for my kids' 21st birthdays.

In other news, all good here. I have my own law firm of five attorneys and five administrative professionals. A 10-person payroll is no freaking joke, let me assure you. But I wouldn't trade being my own boss for anything. No 2A cases, but I do run my own CCW legal plan called The Polite Gunfighter due to my interests in law and CCW. I may post about that one separately.

Cool. Didnt know the TRP's where that expensive now... I shoulda picked one up a decade ago....

Tim Thurner at TT custom leather can make holsters for it. I have the Reinforced IWB non rail 1911 from him. Good quality and good price.

Great gun…good find. I too, didn’t know they were now that expensive. Thinking back when I bought one it was about 1500 out the door. Loved that gun…
Wilson Protector .45, Springer 9mm Loaded, Franchi Instinct SL .12ga. and some other cool stuff for the kiddos...

I had a TRP operator with full rail in my shop today for changing out some small parts.
its a nice feeling gun, but it’s still a Springfield and had several things wrong with it that I fixed while fitting the new trigger, bolt catch and mag release.
The link was too short which had the slide stop binding on the lower barrel feet, causing the slide to be so tight at lockup that you could not easily retract the slide.
Sear pin hole in the frame would not let the sear pin go in or come out without a punch/hammer.
Mainspring housing has the lame lock and missing the retainer pin which makes the gun much more trouble to reassemble.
The frame was as-cast inside the trigger raceway (no apparent machining there whatsoever) and took a lot of clean-up to get a new trigger to fit.
