    DROS required?

If I'm shipping 2 pistols that I legally own out of the state of California for gunsmithing work, is it required to go through the DROS process when they are shipped back? How does that work if the pistols are non roster guns?

    No.

If you’re shipping yourself, then it can be mailed back to you

      All good.

With all of the major shipping companies putting new rules in place where they wont accept gun shipments from individuals, now your guns will have to ship through an FFL for warranty or gunsmith work.
Usually, a gun being sent out for work will be sent on an open work order from the shop you are shipping it from. Some FFLs dont have a shop and are unaware. To be safe with the DOJ, they will insist that the gun needs to go through the 10 day wait upon its return. It is mostly to cover their @ss so that they dont get any additional visits from the DOJ. Find an FFL with a service shop and you should be good to go to pick it up once it returns.

          Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

The gun still has to be dropped off at a customer counter. A lot of Fedex and UPS hubs have closed their customer counters. You cant drop off the gun at a Fedex store or a UPS store. Not a viable option for a lot of people.

FWIW, I would 100% verify that the gunsmith confirms they will mail the gun back to you directly. I'd give him plenty of time to respond, and in writing. Last thing a person needs is a quick "yes" followed by the gunsmith getting misinformation, changing his mind. IIRC we've had some manufacturers do the "off roster, won't ship back" routine.
