HK SP5 - moving from TX to CA - Making it compliant

    Hi there,

I recently bought the new HK SP5 and have to move for work reasons. I received a job offer in LA and I am planning move in a month or so.

My current understanding is I have to do 2 things
-get the 10 round magazined and leave behind the 30 round ones with TX family

-make the magazines fixed. I found this collar

    Am I missing anything else??

At some point if I decide to sell the gun while in CA will there be any issues?

    Thank you

That is a good plan and you will not have any problems selling it here if you so decide, unless new laws are passed. You have to register or sell your guns within 60 days of becoming a resident. And you can sell them anytime after that as well.

I think you can keep the standard mags, you just won’t be able to sell or transfer the mags to anyone in CA. Just need to make sure it’s a “fixed mag” to be compliant. And buy a handful of Gen5 Glock 19s, CZ P10cs and sig p365s so you can sell them at double the price here to help with moving expenses

Oh wow.. I did know these handguns go for double there. Standard mags are grandfathered in if I move, as long as they are fixed?? That would be great if true. No plans to sell the HK so that would be great. Is the SP5 even available for sale for CA residents?

10 round mag max in Ca. Nothing grandfathered. Cannot bring large cap mags. Must block to 10 rounds.

Thanks for clarifying. Yes, that is what I thought. Will be leaving the 30 Rnd Factory ones in TX with family.

He can keep them but he cannot bring them into CA. New residents cannot import mags over 10rds.

Ah, apologies, I thought anyone in CA could have any mags as long as they were acquired legally. Given freedom week, millions of standard cap and high cap mags were brought in. And I thought those who had standard cap mags from way back when were allowed to keep them? I know you can’t import them here if you still live out of state or drive to another state to bring them in if you still live here. I was unaware that you could not bring your legally acquired mags with you if you lived in another state and moved to CA

When you move to CA, if you bring magazines, that is considered importation into the state. Any legal high capacity magazines in the state can stay, but if somebody were to take them out of state on a trip, they can't even legally return with them.
The other issue in your case is that you cannot have a high capacity fixed magazine. (at least this is the case for long guns, and I believe it is also the case for pistols, but somebody please correct me if I'm wrong)

Correct on the fixed mag rule. 10 round max even if you are in legal possession of higher cap mags

You are correct on both counts. Both semi-automatic Centerfire Rifles and Pistols become "Assault Weapons" if they have a fixed magazine holding more than 10 rounds. They are a felony to possess if not registered as Assault Weapons. Please refer to PC 30515.

You're cool with a rimfire rifle having a fixed mag of more than 10 rounds, but the rimfire provision is only for rifles.

Just make clear, you've gotta convert the SP5 to a fixed magazine configuration, otherwise you're gonna have an illegal "Assault Weapon."

If you build a man a fire, you'll keep him warm for the evening. If you set a man on fire, you'll keep him warm for the rest of his life.
