I brought my lunch into the classroom. I'm up early even on the weekends and eat breakfast early so I wanted to eat my lunch on my schedule.

    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Great class yesterday and Mike Mason kept the class relaxed and fun. Total class size was about 180 people split in 2. Class first then range and vice versa. Now the final wait begins.

On my class it was Mason's first time doing training. He seemed very happy and excited to be there. All the deputies we're top notch.

^it was a good class with great instructor (CPL. Mason).
^Main take away points... don't get complacent and get additional training.

About the last hour of the class, Sheriff McMahon stopped in and talked to the class.

He thanked everyone for being CCW permit holders and urged everyone to be active in politics.
^He made a quick mention about people needing to join the NRA and Calguns to keep up-to-date on proposed gun laws.

He mentioned about the increase in crime in the High Desert area, which was a result of SB109 & Prop 47.

He also mentioned that they (Sheriff Dept.) was in the process of securing five range facilities in order to do CCW qualifications/modifications and that there are currently a little over 6800 active permit holders, which should be at around 7000 by the end of the year.
I would like to correct some #'s shown here...
For several months now (according to range officers and training officer) SBSD has been running through (range day) 130-200 per week, which on the low side would be over 6,700 per year, so the 6,800-7,000 active total county permit holders must be incorrect.

As for a timeline, at my range day they said from apply to permit can currently expect to take 12 to 18 months.
                  My timeline = 16 months
                  Applied June 2016
                  Interview March 2017
                  Range 8/26/17
                  picked up permit 8/30/17..

Can we please clone Sheriff McMahon to ALL counties?

I had my class yesterday and Sheriff McMahon came in and talked about 30 min. He mentioned that by the end of the year SB should have 8000 ccw holders out of the 2.1 m people in SB.

Also keeping in mind that even at 180 per class, they were only doing 1 or 2 classes per month even at the beginning of this year.
Captain Marhoefer ran one class of 20 at AVGC per month until Feb.

I'm still not sure that "per week" is accurate. That's a huge workload for a small department that also processes new hires. A recruitment push was the reason (along with the DOJ delays) for low numbers in 2016.

They also have to deal with the 4000 renewals from 2015... the class size comment may have included those.

There are also those who have managed to escape from CA, and a few people have posted (many more that are not on Calguns) that they decided not to renew for whatever reason.

I don't recall when class sizes extended from the 'normal' 60ish.
Renewals don't do the range class.

My class at AVGC was in January '15 and Captain Marhoefer was concerned about safety with the Devore classes running 80 at the time. When I heard that they had surpassed 100, it made sense that they would split the class/range into two groups.
I'm more curious when they began running classes every weekend, and if they are running Sat/Sun or just one day.

Starting around the middle of 2015, modifications are only allowed at renewal. They used to allow one modification mid-term as well as at renewal, but the increased load after Peruta and McMahon stepping in caused them to stop allowing modifications mid-term, so many renewals will also need a range session (but it is not on the same day)
My renewal class is Nov 7 and I'll be doing range as well to replace my G26, but the modification range dates seem to be during the week (Tuesday, like the class IIRC).

I can't turn in my renewal paperwork until the 15th and will schedule range then.

I wish they could extend the renewal to 5 years. But I guess the laws change so fast that every other year is needed to keep everyone up to speed.

It's not up to the county. State law requires renewal every 2 years. There are judicial permits that are good for, I believe 5 (maybe 3?), and employment-related issued by the city PD that are limited to 90 days.
