DMV address updates can be done online so it would be foolish to apply for a CCW while admitting you’re not complying with the law. I mean there are certainly worse violations out there and maybe they won’t care but why not get your house in order before applying? Why give them a reason to say no or further delay an already lengthy process?

Katie, I appreciate your very thorough information. I’ve been following this page pretty closely for the past few months or so after applying for my initial CCW. I called and made an appointment in November, 2019. During the call, they gave me an appointment date in the first week of May, 2020 (which was just last week).

When I called, they hadn’t launched Permitium yet so I initially had the old application filled out. I saw the Permitium launch on their website and emailed them to see if my appointment was still valid or if I had to start all over again. They contacted me via email and said they would let me keep the May appointment date and that I should complete the online application. I did so and paid online as well. In Permitium it shows my May appointment date.

Fast forward to last week. With the lockdown in place, I contacted them by email a few days in advance to see if my appointment was still scheduled or if it would be delayed. I didn’t want to drive down there and not be allowed in.

Now this is what I find interesting in light of the above information. They emailed me back and said they were not open yet and to not show up for my appointment. They stated they would contact me directly when I could go for my appointment. So it seems they are picking and choosing whom to allow in. Although yours was a change to an existing license, you still met with someone at a window so it’s not like there aren’t people there or you can’t personally exchange documents. I feel as if they were being a bit disingenuous when they said they aren’t open then you’re reporting they are. It almost sounds like they’re trying to exploit the current situation to deny permits.

    More detail if you want:
I was making administrative changes, but Permitium made me (well, at least that is how I recall it was. Maybe I was just filling out everything I could.) enter all the weapons and serial numbers. Apparently, if you are NOT changing the weapons, you are not supposed to put in the weapon info, because if you do, when the form goes to the DoJ, they think ALL the weapons changed, which requires different supporting paperwork, which clearly I didn't have, which will cause the paperwork to be rejected.

And, if that made no sense, well, I did not ask for any details from the Sheriff folks. I just refilled out the form WITHOUT the weapon info on it...

THANKS! Good to know when renewal time comes. *Note to self.. do NOT fill out the firearms section!!*

To give some background, she was recently granted a TRO against an abusive domestic partner who was served last week but still has not surrendered his firearms to a LE agency or FFL. She currently owns a handgun and wants to apply for a CCW permit. Will a TRO against this individual suffice in meeting the good cause requirement?

The other question is, she hasn't had a chance to update her address since she just moved down to SD a couple months ago and her CA ID still has her previous address in LA. I am NOT authoritative on ANY part of this. And, I obtained my permit during a time when the Sheriff was less happy about giving CCW permits. While I did not have a TRO, I did have specific, identifiable, personal threats with documentation. So, while not authoritative, I would certainly think a TRO would be more justification than mine, and I was successful, in a less successful time.

SDCGO is where to go for authoritative answers and opinions, and for help with the whole process. They were invaluable for me...

Kate, Thanks for the photos. I think you are right that there is room for 2 more weapons. The thing I like best about the new format is that is fits in a standard size credit card slot in a wallet. I had to spend hours shopping for a new wallet to find one that would accommodate the laminated permit.

And, because it turned out to be easy to add attachments, attached should be the front of the credit card permit, with, I hope, most relevant information redacted. (And, if you know a method of identity theft with only hair and eye color, I would be VERY interested to know... )

I think they look great, especially compared to the current/old ones...

I think one could use such a card as proof of ID, given it is (sort of) Gov issued...

I have tried to attach a picture of the back of my credit card permit. Wagging my thumb at the space, I would say there is room for 2 more weapons. But perhaps the "Restrictions" section can move farther down too...

I’m also interested in the issue of serial numbers. A number of CA Sheriffs allow you to have more than 3 weapons on your permit. It is my understanding that there is no such limit anywhere in State law and that Gore’s justification for only allowing 3 was that there was only room for 3 on the CA DOJ supplied paper permit. Now that that paper form is no longer used, that justification goes away. Would there be room for more than 3 on the new format? Does anybody know anything about a possible relaxation of the limit of 3?

It DOES have my picture on it. Since mine was an update, it had the exact picture from when the permit was issued. The aspect ratio of the picture has changed slightly, so my face put on 10 pounds in the translation, as did my signature on the back. (It is strange to see my squishy signature streeeetched out a bit.) It also has a Restrictions section that now says, "VOID WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW. NOT VALID IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY COURTHOUSE If the bearer of this license is arrested for any reason, officer is authorized to take possession of license." AND there is a SDCSD phone number, "For Information Regarding this card..." And there is a facsimile of Sheriff Gore's signature.

I should add that the format makes it more clear WHICH of the numbers (CII#, Local Agency Number, and ORI number) is the actual Permit number, for those who might not be familiar with all the acronyms...
