SDSO CCW Currently Issued 7412 as of 9/26/22 (overall Δ per day: +3.72; last ~6m Δ per day: +5.85).

Thats 2.25 per 1,000 residents for San Diego County.

By way of comparison, in 2019 San Diego was at 0.34, and Shasta was at 45.5. Among counties with comparable populations, in 2019 Orange County was at 3.73, Riverside at 1.24, and San Bernardino at 3.24.

Commentary: The plot thickens! Consider the post-Bruen slope.

Foototes: During late 2022 there were some fluctuations in the reported figures. The update of 24 Jun. also included an acknowledgement of NYSRPA v. Bruen and some related commentary. The update of 16 Jul. changed the number reported from "Current CCW Licenses Issued" to "CCW Licenses Active" and the figure dropped by about 10%. The update of 18 Jul. (only two days later) changed the language again, to "Total CCW Licenses Active" and the figure recovered about 5%. The update of 25 Aug. recovered about another 5%, returning the data point to roughly in line with the previous trend.

(CA county data sourced from https://web.archive.org/web/20210817...32198382.html; if you have more recent data, please post.)

So recently I traded emails with the State re: ATI website, asking why we can't get our ATI number... they said to speak to the IA re: app status and wouldn't address the ATI number question. Each email was deflected back to the IA and app status.

I then had a phone call (yes they called me) with the SD Sheriff and he told me, the ATI number is an internal Sheriff #, when I pointed out the states website for citizens to track their bkgd status, he then said, upper command has instructed them to not give out the number.

Then I mentioned others who have obtained their ATI number are showing bkgd checks coming back in days, like very few... he then said while he doesn't believe that to be true, even if it was, they still have to wait for the "paperwork" to come back from the DOJ/Fed. I said what, you get snail mail to complete the bkgd check process, he deflected again to it used to take 110 days, now it's down to about 90 days. I asked why 90 days when the ATI livescan check is done in a matter of days, and I asked if there was an intentional delay, he said, it takes 90 days, that's all I can say.

Next I asked about the Permitum website to track app status, he said, oh, it won't update, we just use it to start the app process, it will update to the final status once the CCW is issued.

More delays, more deflection. The last I checked, the next available apt in SD is mid next year, just to get started

Rant over

Because of Bruen, are you guys still submitting a good cause sheet? Even though all people will probably say is, self defense?

I did, but SDCGO is advising applicants to put "N/A" in the good cause section.

I had heard/read somewhere that the sheriff only does interviews one day a week...I think it was Mondays. But if that's true, it could certainly account for some of the longer processing time.

Requiring a permit to exercise a God given and constitutionally protected right is absolutely wrong. But if we have to mess with these stupid permits/process, then there should only be four requirements...1) submit your application including proof of residency, 2) Pay your fee, 3) Pass your background check, 4) pass the class.

It could all be handled on line. They could utilize your existing driver license photo and mail you your card.

My biggest bitch...aside from the cost of this nonsense...and that the stupid permits are only good for two freaking years...is how they tout it's a 90 day process but they completely discount the amount of time it takes just to get your first appointment.

It’s really insane that we need to pay for a constitutional right. We don’t need to beg for permission to exercise any other right…

Be glad we don't live in a a county that requires a psych test. There's more time and money out of your life.

Note too that the bill the petty tyrants of this state just tried to pass, extended the class time to 16 hours for the initial permit and 8 hours for the renewal. If this bill passes when it comes up again...and it will...that's going to double the cost of the class and renewal. My initial class cost me $200 and the renewal was $100. So now it will be $400/$200.

And the fact that we have to go through this ridiculous process every two years is absolutely nuts.

I believe permits and all the associated requirements, classes, etc., are unconstitutional. But if they're going to be mandatory requirements, then they should be free.

I just filled out a renewal application and there was no good cause section at all. Guess we will see how it goes.

Edit: I just double checked and it looks like they changed good cause box (which was previously required) to "additional information that should be considered in evaluating your good moral character", and its optional. I assume leaving it blank doesn't help you very much (oops) but thats what ended up happening. I decided to just go ahead and upload my good cause statement to permitium just in case. They already have it on file anyway, so figured it wouldn't hurt.

I saw that as well and also left it blank. Maybe my occupation with the state will favor me to not need it as well.

Just waiting and waiting. Hoping earlier appointment dates open up.

I agree to leave it blank. No need to support
something that is not required yet and hopefully never.

Asking about, or requiring an applicant to substantiate "good moral character" is B.S. and unconstitutional...just like asking for a "good cause."

This is playing out in the New York courts right now as a result of the recent laws they past immediately after Bruen, and a judge has issued an injunction against the parts of the law that require an applicant to submit family member names, social media accounts, and the good moral character B.S.

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/n...d-carry-rights

Quote:
The judge also struck down parts of the law that required applicants to submit family member names and a list of social media accounts. He also blocked parts of the law that required applicants to show “good moral character” in order to obtain a permit.

“Shouldering an applicant with the burden of showing that he or she is of such ‘good moral character’ (in the face of a de facto presumption that he or she is not) is akin to shouldering an applicant with the burden of showing that he or she has a special need for self-protection distinguishable from that of the general community, which is prohibited under (the recent Supreme Court ruling),” Suddaby wrote. “In essence, New York State has replaced its requirement that an applicant show a special need for self-protection with its requirement that the applicant rebut the presumption that he or she is a danger to himself or herself, while retaining (and even expanding) the open-ended discretion afforded to its licensing officers.”

SDSO CCW Currently Issued 7801 as of 10/25/22 (overall Δ per day: +3.89; last ~6m Δ per day: +6.78)

Thats 2.36 per 1,000 residents for San Diego County.

By way of comparison, in 2019 San Diego was at 0.34, and Shasta was at 45.5. Among counties with comparable populations, in 2019 Orange County was at 3.73, Riverside at 1.24, and San Bernardino at 3.24.

(I'm going to crosspost this in the San Diego County CCW thread, and probably put updates only there henceforth, unless I receive feedback otherwise.)

Let's use Orange County as a population comparable, and (I haven't been tracking, but I have seen anecdotes of more OC people applying) let's assume the latent demand is double the actual. (I.e., twice as many OC people would like permits under a shall issue regiment, but didn't apply pre-NYSRPA.)

To be clear, I'm totally making that up. Maybe the demand is 10x, not 2x. Dunno -- let's start with 2x.

That would suggest that 7.46/1000 is where the demand will settle. (We could assume Florida numbers, at 90.5/1000 as of 2018, but let's not go that far.)

If San Diego had 7.46 issued active permits per 1000 residents, that would be 28,355 permits. At the recent rate, it would take about 100 months to get there.

I had my interview on Aug 29th and it is coming up on 90 days. Do we just sit and wait and the 90 day is just an estimate?

Question about the interview day:

Is there any document signing to be done on the day of one's interview?

I have carpal tunnel release surgery scheduled on my dominant wrist a couple days prior to my interview date. I considered rescheduling but the first available was Oct. 2023...

TIA

I got my approval call/email on day 75, but would not be surprised if they are running a full 90 days now. The "longer" wait was the 4 weeks it took to get my permit after completing training! You'll know they are mailing it when the status bar in Permitium goes away.

Well, crap. Looks like I’ll be rescheduling. An early Feb appt might be coming available!

EDIT: It was easier to reschedule the surgery than the CCW appointment! LOL!

Any new updates from folks who have heard from the Sheriff's office on how close they are to 90 days? I know 3 guys that are at 90 days tomorrow 11/28.

As for me and my son, we are at 90 days on 12/12

Go check the San Diego County, CCW specific thread. People tend to post their time schedules in that thread more...since it's the CCW thread and not the general San Diego thread (this one).

The sheriff's office seems to be hitting pretty close to the 90 days mark, give or take. It's a little hard to know for certain though because you can't always be sure people submitted their stuff in timely fashion. At the very least, I don't see a ton of people complaining that sheriff has been really late. Which is a good sign.

We've also seen them cut the CCW Renewal process down to 45 days which is a great improvement and another good sign.

mine was processed in 89 days. I've been CCW'ing for about 2-3 months now.
