Hi all, have 2 mega lowers in jail right now.
i currently have a 20" colt hbar a2,so was planning to build a lighter weight 16" m4 style with the other lower - im looking for opinions.. thought about .300 blackout, but cost of ammo is sky-high... what are my other options? Thanks, -Armand Sent from my Apple Galaxy Note 7 |

300 blackout and reload!
6.5 grendel and reload! or a uber lightweight 5.56/.223 rifle. Lightweight contour 16 barrel, lightweight 9-12" aluminum handguard, LMOS BCG from JP, no forward assist or dust cover upper, magpul mbus sights, and aimpoint H-1/T-1 on mount to co-witness. Thing will weight like 6-7 pounds max! |

Do what I am doing, build a beater.
You know, the kind of rifle that you can let your buddies shoot when you go out to the desert and not have to worry about. Something that you can do a rattlecan camo paint job on without caring if it looks like hell. That's what I'm gonna do, it may be ugly but it'll run like a champ because it will be assembled with quality parts.

Hah, I went to Quantico Tactical with one of my buds and he got one of those M&P Sports for like $700 after the discount.

Put it away for when you really need it.

Try to sell it at a ridiculous mark up? Haven't seen that around here...
On a more serious note, why not a "featureless" build in your choice of caliber. Last edited by Nick Adams; 11-20-2013 at 9:31 PM.. Reason: I am a product of LAUSD. |

This was probably two years ago, they had a whole pallet full of M&P rifles and were selling them for cheap.
It is a good rifle and I shoot it all the time, the only issue I've ever experienced is PMAG's are a little tight and don't drop free but the weird thing is it doesn't happen with every PMAG. USGI mags work fine though.

I have a spare one laying around too. My plan is to build it into a gas piston, 7.62x39. Ammos cheap, and I want something a little different. Thinking I should finish the one I'm working on now before I start buying parts for that one though.

.300 Blackout (AAC, Whisper, et al) are pretty similar to 7.62x39 in terms of ballistics. If you don't reload, and 7.62x39 is an inexpensive way to go, but tend to have feeding/magazine issues. If you do reload, .300 Blackout, uses standard .556/223 mags, brass, and will generally feed better.

.22 AR and get the DPMS .22 Upper from Midway. Uses the Nordic Components bolt which was widely considered the best bolt design for the .22 AR platform.

There have been plenty of good choices in this thread for what to do with your lower.
I'm just hear to note that in my opinion, there is no such thing as an "extra" lower. They're all just opportunities waiting to be acted on. PS: I would probably go for the dedicated .22lr build. Can't argue with the price of ammo there. |
