Why, do they plan on dying first? Plan on moving out of the county within "a few months"? Not applying NOW doesn't make any sense. It just delays even further when they'll be able to carry.

Could be that they want more people to "test the waters" before they jump in.

Some of the people I know weigh it as a cost factor (i.e. I don't have a small gun so I'll have to spend $600 on a subcompact, $130 for the application and live scan, $100 for the ccw course, $200 on range ammo, $100 for a belt and holster, $100 on self-defense ammo, $200 for bigger clothes, and finally $40 to pick up my permit. After all said and done, I'm down the drain almost $1500 just to carry for 2 years.). Everything cost money to start. But for me, it's worth every penny. ...much of that 1500 dollar figure will not be a re-occurring cost.
Food for thought.

I know there is still a sense of insecurity in this whole ccw process, but ~$130 for the application and live scan is not that bad of a gamble. Heck, people gamble more than $130 over at casinos on a daily basis. I have a feeling things are probably getting better so I hope that sense of insecurity shrinks as time goes by. There were 12 people in my ccw class last week, 10 of which were already approved for their ccw; yet we probably have no input from those people (could be they're not really online community people/they're on a different forum), so we're still missing a big part of the data. I just wanted to let everybody know about my experience with the MCSD.
I had my appointment to drop off my application and get livescan done in the 1st week of March. Mrs. Torres at the Sheriffs Dept was very nice and helpful answering my questions. She told me it would be about 2-2.5 months before i heard anything back. 9 weeks later she called me to let me know that the Sheriff had approved my application and as soon as I have my class done to call back and set up a time to drop off the qualification paperwork with her. I am taking my class through HammerStryke next week and will hopefully have the permit soon after. For anybody who already recieved their permit from Sheriff Warnke, how long after your class did it take for you to get your permit once everything was turned into the office? |

We're trying to see if Warnke is keeping his campaign promise accept "self-defense" by itself as a sufficient GC statement.

I am aware of 2 cases of NON roster firearms approved.
Those were not SSE. My gut tells me SSE will not matter. Suggestion: When you go through the quall and when you do the application get tested with all that you'd like. You can make the Sophie's Choice when they call and tell you to pick only three.

I applied in early March and received a denial letter last week. Standard letter stating insufficient cause towards the end. I put a basic, simple description related to my job. I have had a couple of misdemeanors from teens and early twenty's from my party days related to using alcohol. My last citation was a dumb hunting citation in 2006. Keep in mind that I have a professional license that requires me to pass a background check for employment. Non LE related. Anyways, hope this helps the big picture in regards to Wernke's promises.

I wish. I was coaching my sons baseball team so my weekends were shot. I have my class this saturday and will be calling as soon as I am done to let them know. Glad to hear it shouldn't take too long after the class is done.

It's a mystery how Vern weighs if a person deserves a ccw based on their past history of misdemeanors, citations, etc. I don't recall if Vern stated that you need a "clean background" or that all you needed was just to "pass the background check." Do you know if your misdemeanors/citations prevent you from buying any firearm today? Have you already paid back all outstanding charges related to your misdemeanors/citations? I wouldn't be so haste to judge the new sheriff. As of right now, I don't know anyone who has been denied with a completely clean record. |

This is what Sheriff Warnke said on his Facebook page:
"For those that have a legal right to possess a firearm (for example: not a convicted felon) and you have met the training criteria that I set forth, permits will be issued." He seems like a man of his word. I guess we will see. |

My record in immaculate, not even a traffic citation. If I do not get approved, with my clean record, I don't see what else they can fault me for. |

My statement was typed, addressed directly to the sheriff, and signed by me at the bottom. My statement was genuine, professional, personal, detailed without being too complicated, and nothing over a page. I double checked for grammar and contradictions in my statement. My reasons had to be reasons and not so much excuses. I did not pity myself in the statement. I made no remark to the constitution or any kind of police statistics nor said anything about our police force here in Merced. I know some people on here got approved with just a single statement relating to self-defense, but I didn't want to gamble that chance so I took a different route. |

Did you feel, when you wrote your statement, that if you were the sheriff reading your own statement that it sounded genuine, convincing, and logical enough to issue yourself a ccw given your background? I asked myself that question when I wrote mine and if I could honestly answer that it didn't suffice, then it probably didn't suffice for the sheriff either. Why didn't you just state "self-defense" since that's what Warnke said was sufficient? If you say you need it for your job, and the SO contacts your employer and they say they don't require you to have a CCW for your job, or that they do not want you carrying on the job, your application now fails for lack of GC. Could that have happened to you?

Picked up my permit today!
Timeline- Called for appt: Mid January Drop off and Livescan: 3/4/15 Notification of approval: 5/6/15 CCW Class: 5/23/15 Permit in hand: 5/27/15 Compared to other counties and what I have been reading, this is a pretty good timeline. There were a few other people in there waiting to pick up their permit also. If you haven't turned in your paperwork or called for an appointment....wait times will only get longer. |

The shooting was done from 5, 7 and 10 yards....possibly 15 as well (I cant recall right now), with all the firearms listed on your permit. From what I understand, there is no state "standard" for qualification. Its up to your individual instructor, with input from the Sheriff im sure, to make sure you are capable of using your weapon and able to hit your intended target. Take your time and ypu should have no issues. |

I waited until I was finished with my class before I contacted her again. She had a very quick turn around time for the pick up appt. I took the class on Saturday, called and left a message on Sunday and had my appt for pick up that Wednesday (Monday was also a holiday). I would call as soon as you are done with your class and leave a message, that way you are at the top of her call back list when she returns to work.

Here's my timeline thus far,
2/2 - called in for an appointment to drop off my application and submit livescan 3/24 - first appointment 6/3 - 10 weeks and 2 days later I received a voicemail notifying me of my approval. This was the hardest part, now I can finally breathe. Next up is complete the course and make a final appointment to pick up my ccw permit. For those of you who're wondering what my background is, I'm a part-time student at one of the UCs finishing up my BA in mathematics, I work on campus so I get paid very little, and I, along with my immediate family, have no history of excessive wealth, so in short, I'm no one worth assassinating nor am I someone worth robbing--yet I've been approved. However, my record is 100% clean and I've only ever gotten 2 tickets in my 10 or so years of driving. As for my good cause statement, I explained my lifestyle as an avid fisherman/adventurer/camper, so I'm often away from society and in remote areas not easily accessible to local authorities. Furthermore, my future line of work will be similar to the volunteer work I'm doing now: working with the underprivileged communities since I myself come from a similar background, this includes lots of commuting. Also, working with underprivileged communities = spending lots of time in the "hood", so that's self explanatory. All this was included in my GC statement, but everything ultimately came down to self defense. I didn't provide nor was I asked to show proof of my line of work/volunteer. Hope that helps. And thanks so much to everyone who's contributed to this thread. I would've never gotten this far if it wasn't for ya'll. |

Thanks Duk, You'll remember when we were pushing Pazin just to accept application, the law suit and all that... so it's been more like 4 years and 65 days. Persistence pays.

Forgot to update.., CCW course was completed through CVA in Los Banos two weeks ago. There were eight people in the class, three had not turned in their packets at that time. Range time was 3yrds (from hip) 10 rounds, 5yrds 10 rounds, 7yrds 10 rounds / gun. All went great, the wait continues but one step closer

We started this journey in 2010. Even after the lawsuit, what was really needed to turn this around was to install a new Sheriff. Enjoy your right to carry!
