Default XM118 Long Range Ammo

Anyone use this for their long range shots?

Stats:
175gr HP Long Range Round
Headstamped Lake City LR

Thanks for any insight.

You'll find that nearly everyone here reloads.

I think the marines that shoot with us are using M118LR.

Thanks for the input.

Are these reaching the 1000 yard mark?

Do you guys have any M1As out shooting with you?

I've used M118LR - lot years 98, 99 and 01. Its 1MOA ammo and will go out to 1K at least out of a bolt gun. Its accuracy can be aided somewhat if you run it through a seating die to break the sealant between bullet and case.

from what I've heard, it's not good to use M118LR in an M1A unless you've got one of those adjustable gas plugs. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

IIRC they starting downloading the M118LR in about '03 so it can be used in the M14/M1A platform without beating it up.

That's a shame.

That was supposidely due to the resurrection of the M14 as DM rifles. Don't know about the new stuff but I had no complaint with the 98/99 stuff.

i use XM118LR in my bolt gun and my gas gun (AR .308 DPMS pattern) and it works great. well under 1 MOA for me in both my guns. i have used it in my bolt gun out to 1000 yards at sac valley. my best group at 1000 was 9" using it. i have not shot my gas gun past 100 yards yet, but i plan on one getting out to sac valley and shooting there out to 1000 yards using the XM118LR. personally i really like it because i don't reload and FGMM is too expensive.

is that because it was M118LR, but it was not to spec and thus rejected? please explain the difference.
TIA

I used the American Ballistics M118LR when I went out to the CAPRC course "B" and found it just as accurate out to 1000 as the Federal Premium 175g. Granted that was the first time I've tried to hit a 1000 and with Randal and the gang's help I was on target in about 4 or 5 rounds I think.

You can find the AB stuff at usarmorment.com. Still I will start reloading as soon as I can make room.

The X designates 2nds.
It could be all sorts of reasons.
It could be 1 fps slower than spec.
It could be cosmetic only.

The X does not necessarily mean it's bad ammo, it's just not meeting every spec to be the real deal.
It's usually a bargain because of this.

My son is in the USMC. He use to be attached to a SS platoon. He got to shoot with the snipers and got to shoot the M40A5. They were hitting steel at 1250 yards+. He told me they ran into a bad lot of ammo one time. I asked him to bring home an empty box of M118LR. He said he couldn't. Did not ask why.
