Just got my approval, and had to pay an extra $300. Picking it up in a couple weeks. So it took from 5/1 to 8/25 for a new application. I guess it could have been a week faster if I already had my reference letters done. I still need to turn in two passport photos.

Did my LiveScan this morning, submitted application 6/6/2021 and was advised of preliminary approval 8/19/21.
I emailed Kitty this morning and asked about the remaining steps and documents that may be needed so I can get them in order - but does anybody that’s gone through this have that info available? Also, any recommendations on training providers that are currently accepting students? Would like to get my ducks in a row, not sure if I need to wait and do this incrementally or if I can just try to get everything together beforehand so things are as expeditious as possible when it comes to things I need to have done. |

Thanks. She got back to me about an hour ago and said she can’t authorize training until DOJ comes back with my fingerprints. Makes sense with the window you mentioned.
Getting my letters now. Any recent applicants recall how long their DOJ check went after LiveScan? Permitium says 8-12 weeks.. wondering if it’s extended with COVID. |

Just applied yesterday
So I just sent in my online application yesterday and I'm reading in here about calibers that are accepted. Is .380 not an option? I have a Beretta 96 that I got used and it's had so many parts replaced it's sure to be rejected, but my other handgun is a Bersa Firestorm in .380 that is almost brand new with nothing done to it.
Anyone know if I'm DOA in this process? |

Edit my Good Cause Statement?
When filing out the application it asked me why I wanted a CCW and I wrote a short blurb about doing a lot of craigslist shopping and how my ATMs are mostly inside 7-11 stores.
But I hadn't thought about all the hiking I have been doing the majority of my life. Was that little box on the application my GC Statement? Or do I need to attach another document? If that was it, can I go in and edit it? Am I just screwed? |

Thanks, hopefully I can work on it a little more.

Final thoughts on the whole process:
The county is definitely not "dark green"/"Self-defense". I had originally put quite a short GC statement that included mostly "self defense" statements, but Alicia came back and said I had to elaborate. Times, places, dollar amounts, activities that I do that should be deemed worthy of being issued. I also mentioned my work and going to remote locations. I typed up quite an essay and that seemed to work. At best, it's light green, "Recreation related risks" as I had to mention my hobbies like photography, videography, and shooting, locations I go to, times, and other things like that. |

If you haven’t read my CCW Application Advice thread pinned at the top of this forum you should.

I wrote an essay myself the second time around but didn't get into specific dollar amounts or locations. If I'm asked for that I've got a lot of examples to give though. |

Among other things it goes over recreational risks and daily activities risks and evidence to prove those risks exist. It’s probably optional for Sonoma people but since you are over killing training I thought you might want to overkill the rest of the application process too, especially since it is free.

I don't really have receipts for the stuff I've bought with cash. I can send pictures of my truck, my sheep, my dog and such, I hope they don't need too much proof. Last edited by Ash359; 09-19-2021 at 4:08 AM.. |

Just saw this today. Hopefully it won't hurt the current CCW trend in Sonoma County, but I'm sure it will have an effect.

Best to also get as many people to apply between now and Jan 2023. Get the word out at gun shops and shooting ranges.

Three Sheriff Candidates
Does anyone know anything about the three people running to replace Essick? Particularly their stance on CCW permits?
Carl Tennenbaum Former SF Police Sgt. Eddie Engram Former SoCo Sheriff captain Dave Edmonds Current assistant Sheriff |

I don't know how to reach Engram. Essick choosing him is no guarantee they agree on CCW. However he's probably the most likely one. Only issue is that if Essick with his 30% approval rating endorses him it could hurt his chances. On the other hand, the Libs may vote for him because he's Black. I got a message on Nextdoor from someone who says Engrams is in fact our pro-ccw option and that he'll be speaking at their local NRA
Still I am worried the anti Essick crowd will not support him. However perhaps their vote will be split among Edmunds and Tennenbaum. |

I got this email from Edmunds:
I managed the CCW process for several years and I’m confident that I can set CCW policies that reflect my understanding of these safety needs, and our countywide populations’ general values and concerns. I *hear* that Sheriff Essick has been giving out a lot of CCWs for the hopes of being liked and political favor. Sheriff Freitas didn’t issue any, I believe. If and when I’m elected, I’ll have a few months before being sworn in, and during that time, I’m going to go on a mentoring pursuit with some of the best California Sheriffs right now to learn their perspectives on various subjects, and that’ll include CCWs. But my basic perspective is that there are people who have legitimate reasons for a CCW, and for those people, I’ll issue them. It’ll be more than Freitas obviously, but it also sounds like it will be less than Essick, but we’ll see. Thanks again for reaching out. Please compare me side by side with Assistant Sheriff Eddie Engram and his 2 years of command level leadership (that he’s learned under Essick), and I’m confident I’ll earn your support. Dave |
