My series 80, a project I've been working on that is nearly complete. I bought this in the early nineties, and after being inspired by looking at Hilton Yam's 10-8 builds, I recently decided to use it to learn basic 1911 gunsmith fitting skills myself.
10-8 match barrel kit, rear sight, slide stop and thumb safety. Harrison true radius ignition set, mid-reach trigger, firing pin stop, and ext. mag release Wilson grip safety (replaced "duckbill" style) Ed Brown mainspring housing ISMI 16lb recoil spring on 10-8 guide VZ grips Still working on fitting a tighter EGW angle bore bushing. I think I might also just add some grip tape to the front strap, at least for now. Not the best pic, but I just tested it for the first time this evening and it worked perfectly and the accuracy and handling are greatly improved. Last edited by flanel; 01-05-2015 at 9:42 PM.. |

Nice! You can take measurements of the ID of the slide and OD of the barrel and EGW will make you a custom barrel bushing that will fit.

The 10-8 bushing, and the Colt, are a bit loose only because my slide opening is slightly larger than spec. They work fine. |

A Micro barrel bushing was fit to the Colt barrel and that barrel turned down a bit to allow for unlocking and a tight lock up. Slide to frame fit was tightened. Mid length trigger was set to just over four pounds, crisp. Over travel screw set. It was set up with a Pachmyer wrap around grip with their msh. I did not care for the grips and replaced them but kept the lightweight msh. The slide and frame were hard chromed. Grip safety changed out. As I mentioned the work was done about 1980 or so as I recall. If a close eye is not kept on the rear sight the screw works loose due to the movement of the slide and the screw can shear off. This has happened twice in 34 years. tipoc |

I love it, plenty of idiot scratches to go around I see! Yep, my first (and still favorite) 1911 of five that I own... I've probably put 10,000 rounds through this thing over the years. I few modest mods, but still basically as it came from the factory. And yeah, mine's got an idiot scratch that will compete with the best of them and I put it there. Nope, not going to refinish it or make any excuses. I'm just got to keep on shooting it.

IMHO, I wish this gun was on the roster instead of the XSE. I really like my XSE but I think the current 01991 looks better without the FCS. Nice gun. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

This is a Colt I had built for my father on his 65 birthday. The work was done by a friend named Matt Mclearn.
The only factory Colt parts left on the gun are the frame, slide, grip safety, and slide release. Everything else was replaced with fitted parts. The slide was given a flat top and then serrated, frame and main spring housing was cut at 30 LPI, and refinished by Matt. Gun shoots better than his old bullseye gun, smooth as glass, and locks up like a vault. My father had to sell his old Gold Cup when I was a few months old to cover medical bills for me, and always wanted another Colt 1911 to replace it. I bought a brand new XSE thinking it would need minor things, but ended up having to scrap everything except what was mentioned above because the gun was crap out of the box. Even the roll marks on the slide needed to be redone since it wasn't cut flat and it needed to be resurfaced. Jerry

I can finally join this thread I need to practice my lighting more on this one. I think I'll have my lights closer next time. It was hard to get the roll marks to shine
Haven't had a chance to get it to the range yet. I bought it last month unfired. Great quality gun, more loose than my Kimber, but I don't care. I wanted a blued classic looking Colt. The trigger feels less awesome than my Kimber, but still great. I'm excited to shoot it, this thing oozes character and history. The jacket was my Grand dad's, my dad saved it for me when we were sorting through my Grandma's house

My Colt Commander XSE with S&A slim profile magwell and SGM custom slim wood grips. The grip screws were hard to find, made by Altamont. Came together nicely though some filing of the bushings was required as well as the screws to fit the slim grips. Apparently Colt started staking their bushings on these so had no choice, but in the end it's better anyway, don't have to worry about them coming loose.
