Default Best ammo for Ruger 10/22?

I just bought a Ruger 10/22 Talo M1 Carbine edition and this is actually my first .22lr rifle. I'd prefer to pick one type of ammo and stick with it for awhile so that the point of impact doesn't shift. Perhaps hyper velocity because...why not? CCI Stingers are good, right? What about Aguila hyper velocity HP? It's mainly for plinking but I'd like to think of it as a survival rifle too just in case. I suppose I should test a few boxes of ammo before ordering some by the case. How about a Top Five list of the best types of ammo for the Ruger 10/22? Thanks for any help!

My (2) Ruger 10/22 eats pretty anything non stop. Aguila is my personal favorite.

I have tried many (including some $20/50 stuff) and recommend CCI Standard Velocity for accuracy, CCI Blazers for plinking, and CCI MiniMag 36gr hollowpoints for hunting. Hyper velicity is generally a waste of money, and it's hard on the action.

Mine eat everything I feed them. There is the occasional FTF but that's .22 ammo for ya.

Fed my 10-22 1000's of Remington 36gr hollow points and CCI Mini-Mags. Enjoy your new rifle.

I’ve been shooting a ton of aguila lately because that was what was available when I wanted to buy, but my 10/22 is the least picky of all my 22s. Even absolute garbage ammo that had problems in other guns shoots just fine.

Another vote for Aguila. They've been selling it at Big 5 for similar prices as pre-C19 days lately when you catch it on sale.

CCI minimag is the gold standard of 22 ammo. I couldn't tell the difference in point of impact between hollow point or solid.

Besides CCI, my next choices would be Blazers and Aguila.

Federal Automatch sucks. I'd rather use Remington or Federal Champion instead.

HV works great in finicky .22 handguns, just go with standard velocity .22

CCI, Armscor, Federal, Aguila...

I agree with all of this. You can’t beat CCI for affordable quality, but I would suggest using the Stingers and other hyper velocity ammo in a lever action so you don’t beat up the bolt too much on your 10/22.

As others have said the Ruger 10/22 will literally eat anything reliably. I run CCI standard velocity for the most part in the 3 I have, and can't remember ever having a single issue

You have better luck than me, because I consistently get duds and poor accuracy with them.

I bought thousands of them during the Obama ammo shortage when I used to check the Walmart inventory daily and drove there before sunrise to get what I could. But beggars couldn't be choosers back then.

Thought the Ruger 10/22 literature specifically warned against using Stinger rounds.

CCI Mini-Mags seem to run closest to flawless.
1) CCI Mini-Mags
2) Remington Golden Bullets (why? I don't know.)
3) CCI AR Tactical (designed for S&W MP 15/22)
4) Winchester M-22

Others-
Most versions of Federal seem to FTF or FTE. Even the Match Grade.
Aguila OK, but dirty.
American Eagle. The worst. Dirty, FTF/FTE, inaccurate, light strikes, low powered charge, etc.
Remington Thunderbolts in the one batch I used made me understand why some have called them Thuderturds. I was wrong, these are the worst. Ha!

My factory 10/22 barrel will eat and cycle just about anything as long as it has enough powder in the case. My heavy barrel is a little finicky with the buckets grade.

I run a few 10/22s and I pump CCI, Aguila, Federal, etc thru with no issues.

You can shoot Stinger’s but to keep from banging the bolt it helps to change the buffer to a soft one. (and the bolt release, mag release at the same time)

I wish we could run a binary trigger in Californistan but we’ll probably never get that pleasure. With that trigger you have a lot of .22 firepower available.
I also consider the 10/22 a good SHTF and small protein sourcing weapon because it’s quiet and accurate.

So what i did was trick out the stainless Ruger takedown with the new bolt release, mag release, recoil buffer (softer) but I discovered FEDERAL PUNCH AMMO and that’s really zippy and more FPS (according to you tube. My Crono blew up when I shot it…hahaha)

So my backpack, get food, fend off a crowd, trunk gun is loaded with 110 rounds of Federal punch in the stock.

I use Remington GB 36gr HP for my bulk ammo in the 10/22 and Buck Mark. For the rifles they seem to be the most accurate HV bulk ammo.
40gr Mini Mags or Aguila HV is my backup for semi - autos. Runs well, but slightly less accurate in my 10/22 and RAR.

I save my CCI and Aguila SV for the bolt rifles.

Federal blue and automatch sucks in my experience. Accuracy and reliability is lower than CCI and Aguila in my experience. Only issues in my 10/22 were ammo, the Federal Blue box with failure to fire and Tac-22 with getting stuck in the chamber. The 10/22 was more reliable with this crap ammo than the Buck Mark, both of which typically will eat anything.

The GB has been pretty good for bulk stuff, and Aguila has been good as well.

Whatever bulk ammo you can find, I shoot anything and everything with my Semi-custom 10/22 clone. I regularly use the 25 round Ruger mags without issue, don’t think they are known as finicky rifles.

Stingers in any 22 regardless of if they can handle it or not, is a waste of good money for no gain, and likely a loss of accuracy to boot in my opinion..I have one box of CCI stingers I keep here for the Wife..It is Her self defense last ditch weapon.LOL It is really all She is comfortable with, so I have Her keep one loaded with them here..

That all aside..I use mostly CCI SV and Mini Mags in all my Pistols and Rifles..I am not a competitive shooter..And CCI has always served me just fine..

I found a good price and ordered some high but not hyper velocity Aguila to start with. If I find a good deal on CCI Mini Mags I'll probably buy some of those. Thanks again, guys.

What is that ammo carrier?

Aguila 22LR ammo is a good choice for the normal HV and SV. They smell a bit strange, but works just as well as similar CCI ammo.

Don't forget to try some high quality target ammo. If your gun likes it, you can discover how accurate your rifle is. Nothing beats precise shooting!

Target ammo is gonna be subsonic. CCI standard velocity, SK (many "flavors"), Eley (again many "flavors"), etc. Lapua Center X is the cream of the crop if you really want to use accurate and consistent ammo.

Thank you Bob
I sent the gentleman an email….I’m not on instagram.
I don’t even own a 10/22 anymore. That ammo carrier would tempt me into buying a takedown for my SHTF backpack.

Eley Semi-Auto Benchrest Precision. I was getting consistent SD of under 5 in a 10/22 with 10-shot aggregates.

( Use youtube chapters to find the external ballistics data rundown )

Only issue I had at first is that I was getting some failures to feed. But in later range sessions, it wasn't an issue. Most likely because I actually cleaned the action.

The 'best' .22 LR ammo for any firearm is what works 'best' in that firearm. In other words, while some general statements will hold true, there is just no way to point to any particular brand or type of ammo and say... "THIS is it, period."

As an example, I like CCI Velocitors 'the best' out of a scoped, bolt action CZ 452. They consistently produce under 1" with a stock trigger and a second-hand Burris scope at 50 yards, more than accurate enough for squirrels. Second choice for that same rifle would be CCI Mini-Mags where the group size is marginally larger, but the ammo is less expensive. Yet, in an unscoped CZ 452, my first choice is the Mini-Mags, with no need to 'experiment' with other options. In other words, the scope allows the Velocitors to exceed the off-hand capability of the Mini-Mags, but doesn't make a meaningful difference with just the Mini-Mags.

With a 10/22? What vintage? A mid-1980's vintage shot Stingers just fine and a newer version likes the Aguila's well enough that they have become my second highest round count in terms of available supply. But, if I had to choose just one round, it would be the Mini-Mag HP's. However, truth be told, any of the 'bulk' stuff will work in a pinch, especially Winchester, whether for plinking or squirrels. You just have to accept that there are going to be a few... duds.

In short, when it comes to what works in a 10/22, I haven't met much which doesn't. What works better tends toward the CCI stuff, primarily from the standpoint of consistency. What works best is very much dependent upon the individual firearm and the lot of ammo.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll try the brands mentioned and probably avoid the hyper ammo for now.

Best ammo for a 10-22 would be ammo you shoot in a Marlin,LOL

Kidding you aside..I use CCI Mini Mags and CCI SV in all my .22s, great ammo that is short of target ammo of course..But the best off the shelf ammo I have ever found..

Stingers are a waste of money, unless you are forced to carry a .22 for SD for some odd reason....They may be an option there..

^^^ This but with one exception. I love CCI mini mags. It makes (made) a great hunting round for small game….. before lead became a California crime to hunt with.

None the less, any copper plated bullet works great and keeps the action cleaner longer than exposed lead rounds.

The best ammo for a 10-22 or any other .22 , would be the ammo which the rifle cycles reliably and gives the best groups… .22 can be ammo sensitive…. Try lots of different brands/types….
