I know some forum have a single-button-press way of seeing all your threads or all your replies. It provides an easy way to see your current threads.

joenoriega13 06-10-2011 3:45 PM

improve calguns

I understand not allowing each individual user to delete there threads because the valuable information in each thread. but why not allow each person to release control over the threads? many of the threads floating around are some with 1 or 2 useless replies and i have some posts that are for sale items that I post and someone else just says ill take it and then the thread is over. so my proposal is that if we can all click a thread and say release this from my list. it would remove it from there personal list but still stay on the site for everyone to see until one of the mods decide to either keep it, delete it, or merge it with another. it just seems like it would be a lot easier for the mods to fine the useless waisted text and delete it... and keep calguns much cleaner of the garbage. thanks guys

ke6guj 06-17-2011 7:01 AM

I've been seeing a lot of locked/deleted posts when posted "in the wrong forum". Wouldn't it just be easier/cleaner to just move it to the right forum?

Isn't that the "User CP" link on the masthead? Click there, to see all subscribed threads with new posts since last time you logged in, and click once more to see all subscribed threads, period.

Interfan 06-17-2011 10:13 AM

My grumpy guy shortlist would be:

1. Clean up the marketplace. Location is a problem. Add a dropdown to the posting are that has a list of either counties or metro areas so that all posts in the marketplace forum have the location of the seller, poster, or buyer in the post somewhere. Bar users that post or PM "I'll take it" and then back out or vanish. No warnings, just a ban. This has been a pretty big problem as of late.

2. Make the wiki much more visable that deals with all of the legal related posts on: AW (modern sporting rifles :32: ) standard cap mags, what can be shipped to CA, etc. There are way too many posts on "can I do this" by people that are too lazy to read.

3. Make a specific legal advice forum where there is a price of admission to post in the form of a donations (any size) to the CGF. It is great that there are some attorneys that are active on the forum and give great free advice; but their time and expertise has a high value. Since most work with the CGF, the CGF should benefit from their time offered to post advice.

4. I know that there are a lot of "it's for the kids" guys out there, but remove the censorship for language or at least have a way to turn it off. We "should" all be adults or supervised by adults here. If your boss has objections to viewing Calguns at work and the language filter is your way around a company internet policy, your sloth shouldn't be my problem :sarcasm: as I may choose to colorfully express my opinions.

Cowboy T 06-17-2011 1:03 PM

Not so much a technical thing as it is a cultural thing.

Most of the time, I hang out in the Reloading forum, as my primary interest here is in discussing and helping to spread that hobby. At times, I've seen some very strong "brand loyalty" issues, to the point of blinders. We should all remember that, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, Honda, Mercedes, or otherwise, let's help people get into reloading. "Brand wars" only turn people away, and given that the traitors to liberty will surely try AB 962 again and again, we can't afford that.

This would be a great improvement.

I am not going to read 11 pages, and maybe this has been said, but on other forums I use, when you go to start a new thread, the BB software pulls up about 5 or so threads that appear to match the one your about to start. This way, you can see it has already been done and go post up in an existing thread so as to not make yet another repeat thread or it shows you it might be something new so worth posting.

Something like this could really help with all of the dupe threads and similarly asked questions. As well, it does not rely on the user using search first as it is an automated process right there in your face as you start to compose your thread.

Maybe vB doesn't have this plugin?

ke6guj 06-20-2011 12:59 PM

looks like it is already built into vbulletin, http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/m...oup_showthread

glock_this 06-20-2011 1:03 PM

So what's the hold up, crank that function up and let's cut out half the repeat threads already answered!

wait.. you mean this?

Show Similar Threads?
Set this value to 'Yes' if you would like to see 'similar threads' displayed on the show thread page

Not sure this is the actual function I was explaining as what is the "show thread page"? What I am talking about is in the Thread Title box your typing your new thread title into, right below that, in real time and dynamically based on what your typing in the title, a box appears with 5 or so threads that match yours and those 5 can change as you complete your title and it finds more relevant and matching already existing threads.

my bad, I thought it worked when you were starting a thread, not that it worked after the thread was already started.

I think this is what you want, http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1711430 . Hopefully Kestryll would be willing to install this plugin. I know he doesn't like to install plugins since they might affect the stability of the forum.

glock_this 06-20-2011 1:34 PM

BINGO!

It works awesome and on other forums I use, it has stopped me from making threads that (1) already existed (2) already had my answer (3) allowed me to help others or add some data to it. It is essentially the search function and a culling duplicate function all in one and once you start your thread and see the dynamic list created of similar topics to the one your about to start based on the title your typing.. you can just stop and click the link and get into that existing thread and bail out on the dupe you were about to start.

Other sites I use that use this arguably as big as CGNs and everyone worries about stability and speed on forums of course, I have never seen (or heard) of issues with this plugin and in reality, it can make a dramatic effect on size of the DB and thus, pull on the server. No matter how you cut this one, it works and it is a huge helper to the users and the admins.

Tinknocker 06-29-2011 9:39 PM

Excuse me if someone suggested this already, but i think if you would show the date a thread was started in the title
we could tell if the post was recent, bumped or resurrected. Keep up the good fight! to make myself a bit more clearer I mean on the forum page? I'm not sure if that's the term? or the list of threads? As my avatar points out I'm a noobi.

How about a vendor map, where we can see which CalGuns sponsors are near us?

Skidmark 07-03-2011 5:00 PM

Calguns would be better if....

...The Admins figured out how to let members or mods make sticky threads in the Shotgun forum. Like this one:

you can just PM moderators in charge of that forum (listed at the bottom of the forum) Or you could even use the "report post" function since it includes the link to the thread and may work better than a PM.

Thanks, I'll send a PM. The "report post" function has this warning:

"Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts. "

Survival needs to be seperated from camping. I don't want to annoy the campers with my EOTWAWKI chatter, preparations and survival stuff. And plenty of them often chime in with negative comments about the threads....give "SHTF" its own thread.

I spend a good amount of my time in the O/C/S forum, and while I like the idea of preparedness and self-sufficiency, are there enough threads (in CG's eyes) to justify the new forum? I support the split, but am trying to be realistic and hope it works out though.

Dark Mod 07-06-2011 1:39 PM

It would be nice to be able to use special characters when searching: S&W, C&R etc... its a huge pain to try and fine C&R rifles on the marketplace, same thing with smith and wesson.

It would also be nice to have a seperate place for group buys, I love them and if i could i would buy everything like that. Its difficult to wade through all the different forums looking for something, when i could just go to one organized page and see if theres any new group buys going on

An overal better search feature would be nice, being able to include, exclude and exclusivley include terms would help the search function alot. Probably also reduce the amount of duplicate 1911 and AR build threads because members could easily find their answer to questions already asked years ago

Location AND price would be super nice!!!!

I'd love this functionality. would be a huge helper for sure

Bizcuits 07-08-2011 12:33 PM

I'd love to see the sellers forum refurbished to include it's own special search function such as "Location of Seller, Caliber, Maker, Model".

Sellers listing their ads could fill in these fields with pre-selected options (drop down menu's) Separate location by AREA code for example. So a seller from Sacramento or Roseville could select 916 from a drop down "Location" menu. This would prevent individual sellers from typing in their location on their own and implementing (South Sac, Sacra, Sacramento, Sac, Sac Town, etc) resulting in a search for Sacramento ads only bringing up Sacramento and voiding the ads where the location is listed as (South Sac, Sacra, Sac, Sac Town etc)...

Perhaps also an option to include the sellers ability to list where he or she is willing to ship. So if a Sacramento buyer wants to search ads in the LA area, they could also narrow the search down to include only those ads where buyers will ship or arrange to meet long distance.

With how popular the private sellers area is, it would be nice to have a better search function. Right now the best option to reliably find all area ads is to manually browse every listing. The same goes for looking for a specific part or firearm.

Hispanic_Hercules 07-10-2011 10:55 PM

I like the idea "joenoriega13" mentioned. It would be nice to have a feature which would allow you to look within a certain mile range from your location of posts within your specific area.

Mr.1904 07-26-2011 7:45 PM

make a seperate buy sell trade for rifles, shotguns, and pistols.

Quickbeam 07-27-2011 5:51 PM

Yes I have to agree on improving the search feature, the current one isn't very good...

On another note, the Calguns foundation would benefit from having more promotional items on sale, more t-shirts, stickers, stuffed guns, etc.

rooster01 07-28-2011 8:20 PM

can we have norcal and socal sub-forums under the buy/sell/trade section? it would make it much easier to browse while reducing clutter and traffic.

But there are at least 17 distinct regions in California - why stop dividing at just two?

Blitzburgh 08-08-2011 8:28 AM

An Idea/Suggestion

No... I didn't do a search to see if this has already been suggested :)

How about an Email address for Members? Maybe only Contributors?

blitzburgh@calguns.net ??

These days emails are easy, cheap, not hard to admin, don't take up a ton of drive space, etc., and it could be used to facilitate better/safer sales in those forums. I know a lot of people don't like to give out their email address. And if a person used it as their main address it could be a little bit of "advertising" to others that have not heard about this forum.

Just a thought...

cptorrez 08-10-2011 11:53 AM

I don't know if anyone would be interested in this, but would it be a good idea to put cal guns approved workers. For instance I have a great electrician. and contractor and painters ect. I think it would be kind of cool to pass the deals on to other cal gunners that may need work done. just a thought

sarge1572 08-19-2011 5:00 PM

Is it possible to improve the "search" function? To be able to narrow a search by using more than one word would make searching for "stuff" easier and faster.

Thanks. CalGuns is a great site.

Jeff

in the FIREARMS FOR SALE section there is a great deal of discussion about what you can post and ask of the seller. What if the for sale sections were changed so that only the seller could post and no questions or comments from anyone but the seller can be added?

JasonM 09-01-2011 12:46 PM

Please improve the search function to allow "boolean operators", like AND, OR, NOT.

Also, please make additional forums for the marketplace. It is way too crowded, and very difficult to find what you are looking for since everything is lumped together: shotguns, auto-pistols, revolvers, mil-style long-guns, hunting long guns, etc

But, thank you for the site, it is an incredible resource.

Stina1969 09-03-2011 2:28 PM

Make it more user friendly. I'm having a heck of a time figuring out how to post/sell my gun. Any help is appreciated. I have a Rossi .357 magnum revolver in excellent condition, was a gift, I don't use it and I want to sell it. I live in Sacramento. It's value is $389, I'd like at least $275 for it. Thanks in advance for any help.

We definitely need a real search function! I'm sure it would save us a lot of dupes at the very least.

Perhaps a better search feature, and especially more Mods in the for sale forums and general/off topic discussion. Other than that, and its a great site.

Calguns.net on Android phone

Since Friday afternoon, when I try to access Calguns from my Android phone, I get the following error message when I try to enter the forums:

Bad Request
Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
Size of a request header field exceeds server limit.

However, there is no problem accessing Calguns from my home computer.

There is some kind of program that allows Android phones to see Calguns posts, are they connected to Calguns? I'm not sure how to contact them. Or is there an updated program that I should be using?

Or am I the only one affected?

clintonR71weir 09-15-2011 8:34 AM

Great! Busy deploying new equipment, rest of the team is busy taking in new customers. GV has some very exciting projects in the works, that I can't reveal anything else about just yet How about with you?
