I live in the County of Los Angeles, so what is transcribed below will work for others that live in Los Angeles County. If you live in a county other than Los Angeles, then your Veteran Status Verification Form (VSD-001) will need to be signed by your respective County Veterans Service Officer.
  1. Download Veteran Status Verification Form (VSD-001) from this post.
  2. Print and complete Veteran Status Verification Form (VSD-001).
  3. Mail Veteran Status Verification Form (VSD-001) to County Veterans Service Officer (CVSO) along with your proof of eligibility (DD214, ...) along with a self addressed stamped envelope to County Veterans Service Officer 2nd Floor 1816 S. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles CA 90015
  4. Wait for your return envelope and completed Veteran Status Verification Form (VSD-001) to be returned to you. Once received make a copy for your own records as the DMV will keep the original.
  5. Make an appointment at the DMV for a Drivers License correction or renewal (whichever is applicable to your specific situation).
  6. Take your completed Veteran Status Verification Form (VSD-001) along with your CDL to the local DMV. Complete the CDL application, submit the form, and pay the $5.
  7. Wait 2-3 weeks for your updated Drivers License to arrive.

This is what worked for me, and with any luck it should work for you to.

I'm happy with my RETIRED ID card; it's more distinctive than a stupid drivers license.

Thank you for your service, but not everyone who served honorably is eligible for a retired or VA ID card, and I think this designation on their CDL helps bridge that gap.

    Thanks for posting!

How long did it take to get your VSD-001 back from the CVSO?

And just to confirm you did NOT send a copy of your ID?
