Default Any support for a self reliance/homestead sub forum?

Just wondering if there is enough support for a self reliance/homestead sub forum. This really is a difference to the survival/prep thing. I noticed a lot of posts lately that are geared more to this topic and thought I would see if there is enough interest to ask for it or if it is even worth asking for

Fat chance..........

It took me:

Getting banned multiple times, 5 yrs time and constant nagging, fighting with mods and owner to get this forum created.

Good job then! I'm current in exile in this forum serving a ban from the Off Topic forum. But this one's starting to grow on me.

Self-reliance is the soul of prepping, tell me the differences you see

Homestead is a totally different animal, that I do understand

TO ME prepping is more of a beans, bullets and bandaids stored for when things don't go well while SR is more of a way of life. Over simplified but gets the spirit across.

A prepper would be more of the guy who would by a can of dried corn in a #10 can while SR would be more likely to grow the corn. yes I will agree there is some cross over and SR is soul of prepping but these days it has morphed into something way different.

And the survival thing is way different all together.

NO disrespect to PC for the hard work he put in to get this forum started (THANK YOU for that) just thought since the fundamentals were already laid, and it's not too hard, why not split them out. I could see more threads on who's planting what, chicken and other livestock issues, etc.

Thought I would float the idea to see what others thought

The big issue was the camping forum had survival in the sub forum name, and it was a constant pissing match with some people furious that survival and prepping threads were posted in the camping section.

If fact I remember someone *****ing about how he wanted to talk about tents and stoves in a preps thread, so I started a tents & stoves thread with one word in the OP "discuss" - boom! 70 odd posts about tents and stoves.

As far as creating a new sub forum I don't see the current surv/preps sub forum regulars having a problem if self reliance and homesteading threads crop up.

I'd be interested and I see plenty of synergy with the four subjects all being welcome.

Survivalists and preppers are interested in homesteading (or should be, anyway).

If real homesteaders wanted a forum of their own, separate from prepper nonsense, I could see that. Maybe the question should really be how many here are interested in self-reliance, but are not really into TEOTWAWKI scenarios, etc. I myself first learned about survivalism in the 70's, Mel Tappan, Kurt Saxon, JWR era, so the current forum structure works for my interest level.

Maybe there should be TWO... one for us for ideas and discussion, and the other in camping or something?

I'd be interested but don't think it has much of a place on CalGuns. If it happens I'll join in.

Or a hippie back-to-the-land forum, as the case may be.

Homestead? In California?

There is not an inch of land here that is not either privately owned or Federal land.

You are about 150 years too late. Land is available in Siberia.

I'd have to say that self reliance is the goal of prepping, and having a (secure) homestead and prepping is a good way to be self reliant.

I guess maybe it boils down to whether the current sub forum regulars are going to get their panties in a bunch if homesteading threads pop up.

Personally if I'm not interested in a thread - I don't read it. If I'm not generally adding to the conversation I don't post. I think it would be a non issue if we see homesteading threads in here.

Maybe the usual janitor for this sub forum - Librarian - will chime in if this thread stays up or someone starts flagging the homesteading posts. Until then I say post em up.

Note: These threads are currently posted and no wars have broken out - sure seem homesteading related to me.
grafted/multi-fruit trees
Urban Farming

Also if you search for chickens in surv/prep forum no less than 30 threads come up.

You should add that to your sig line, I have a new respect for you. This forum is perfect for our political climate out here.

As too the sub forum, good luck. Start an email group and when it gains traction, start a site - then it's all about the groups rules.

There isn't enough traffic for that here.
I think this forum is kinda dead as it is.

This isn't exactly a homesteading forum, but it is based entirely on alternative power, alternative construction methods etc: http://www.fieldlines.com/

There's a lot of hippies but they have good info on the kinda stuff we're into, which is basically self-sufficiency.

Default Why we need a self reliance/homestead sub forum

Prepping has short-term benefits that gets you out of Dodge and keeps you alive for a few days to a few weeks or months.

Self-reliance/homesteading picks up where prepping ends and keeps you going indefinitely.

For example, consider the on going Fukushima radiation disaster and the increasing levels of radioactive contamination to California.

The prepper will respond and buy a Geiger counter and begin to measure radiation levels in his food and water products; he might even take measurement of radiation levels around his home.

The homesteader will respond by switching his gardening-farming strategy to a below ground crops (for example carrots) to avoid the more easier contamination of surface crops. He would also set up a bentonite clay water filtration system for his drinking water, for plant irrigation, and live stock. He would do this to lesson bioaccumulation of radiation in the food chain.

Eventually, the prepper would arrive at the doorstep of the self-reliant homesteader for resupply of non-contaminated food and water.

I'd be up for it. I'm trying to breed rabbits and start a garden, trying to grow/raise more of my food, and have questions. I don't want to go join 15 other forums for that stuff.

I understand the difference and am interested. I have a mini-homestead concept under way on my property and am on the learning curve for how to develop the potential.
