Default FHL training zone map

I got the training zone map for FHL off of Jesse's Hunting and ran it through some filters to improve contrast. Does anyone know if this map is up to date?

If this map is current I will try to sync it to google maps so it can be used for scouting or loaded into a gps.

I don't think it's changed much in decades. Maybe split an area into two is all. I don't have my current one handy at the moment.

Sync to google earth would be the bomb. Years ago they hadit detailed on a big topo in the check station, but that's long gone.

Glad you like the idea. If you have a better map let me know so we are working with the most up to date info. My goal would be to have a file on google earth but that we can also put on our gps that is geo referenced for use in field.

Good to know. We might not get this exactly right the first time but, with the input of hunters who visit FHL and have the latest maps we can get some good online geo coordinated maps and keep them updated.

Thanks.

I tested the map on Google Earth. The map is distorted from I guess being made from copies of photo copies.

It is a little off in some places, but should work for scouting online and general reference. I will try adding some more data points to the map and see if that helps before I post it.

If you get up there before me and can get your hands on better map that would be great.

I overlayed one of the maps onto Google Earth and it took quite a bit of play to get it to fit. What is it exactly you want to achieve? I just wanted to put a TA into my gps and overlaying it on Google Earth and importing into my gps seemed to work pretty well.

I have a program where I can put latitude and longitude from the field or Google Earth and it will orient the map into geo space.

I picked some easy to spot points on the FHL map like road intersections, or hard right angles that defined the national forest boundary and created points for those in Google Earth. I then imported the points into my mapper program and found the corresponding points and then the software automatically orients the FHL map based on its pixels in correct geospace. Actually works with three points. I used around six points which took about 20 minutes to find and plot on the FHL map (Just being precise and meticulous when finding pixels on a map).

I can then import it into Google Earth or create a file that will go into a Garmin unit. The same file should work for both Google Earth and a Garmin Gps as Google Earth uses the Garmin file format to import maps.

To me its better to have FHL's map overlayed as it is and know where it is off rather than taking it into photo shop and skewing it to fit onto Google Earth.

The way I'm mapping it could be updated quickly, and I suppose if the points are known or more created or taken in the field with hand held gps units the FHL map could be redrawn or corrected.

A lot of the FHL map training boundaries seems to be based on topography such as rivers, roads, National Forest lines, valleys, etc to some degree so some of the adjustments can be done by eyes also or both.

Program is called Global Mapper.

There is another program called Ozi Explorer that does the same thing and is similar to Garmin Base Camp.
