Default Small Pistol Magnum Primers vs Small Rifle Primers

Can Magnum small pistol primers be used in place of small rifle primers in a .223?

Just curious...

I think the cups are to soft and will not hold up. Pressure in a .223 round is 10 to 20k psi more than say a .357

Bad idea. The 223 works at a higher pressure.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Also, my understanding is that rifle primers are harder because many rifles have free floating firing pins. Soft primers in an AR platform can cause a slam fire. You don't want that.

Default On the other hand...

Ima gunna walk on the thread .. ooops

I use Small Rifle Primers in my .45ACP sm primer cases. CCI#400s to be specific. Worked the load from the bottom and ended up with my usual powder charge without any noticeable difference from my regular LPP .45ACP load.

3.8g Clays
230g Bear Creek Moly RN / 230g Xtreme RN
COAL 1.22"

OH! and never use SPP in an AR platform. Bad things can hapen like the potential and likely, slam fire

The best thread EVER!

No don't use small pistol in your 223 AR! The AR needs a rifle primer. although they are both the same size, SR primers are thicker to withstand the pressure developed by a rifle. Note, CCI makes the #41 just for these applications where you may get a safe, use the correct components.

More pressure on the rifle, bad idea.

I have seen numerous threads stating that the CCI 400 and CCI 550 primers are the same per CCI. I saw that some people have used the 400's in place of 550's in 357 magnum rounds. I have not heard the other way around though using 550's in 223 rounds.
