Default Gun Room vs. The Gun Range

Hello all. I just wanted to post my experiences with the Gun Room in Elk Grove and the Gun Range in North Highlands. A friend of mine took me to the Gun Range in and I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the friendly nature of the staff. I felt really comfortable. The range itself was well ventilated and the range staff would walk by, but left us alone. I'm sure if they saw something unsafe, they would say something. The range impressed me so much that I took my wife there yesterday to try out different handguns. We rented a couple of guns and the staff was patient while she handled different guns. It was another great experience.

Now the Gun Room, that is a different story. I will never set foot in that range or their store again!! And I live right in Elk Grove!! I had such a bad experience with the range staff. I was treated like I was a new marine at boot camp. I was yelled at as soon as I walked in the door. I didn't get a "hello" or anything. It was, "WELL THE FIRST THING WE NEED TO DO IS CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR WEAPONS ARE UNLOADED!!" I was like wtf, give me a chance to set my range bag down and show you my weapon. And when I was filling out the paperwork, straight rudeness and anger when I had a question. There was only one other customer in the place and they had two people working there, so it wasn't like they were busy or anything. Then when I was getting ready to leave, being the nice guy I am, I said: "Have a good one." I got silence in response. I drove away vowing to myself that they will never get my business again.

I just bought a shotgun from Wild Bill's, and I am also in the market for a handgun for my wife. I am sure I will buy more guns in the future. The Gun Room won't be getting my money. I just don't understand how a place of business can deal with customers like that. I can't imagine bringing my wife in there.

So props to a place (The Gun Range) that has it right.

Haven't yet visited The Gun Range. Do they have handgun rentals? Looking to shoot some .45 and 38/357.

Yes, they have a large selection of handguns for rental. Being a glock fan, I tried to steer my wife towards glocks but she didn't like the way they fit her hand. She liked the way the M&P's fit, so we rented a 9 and a 45. We liked the 45. In fact, I REALLY liked the way the M&P 45 shot. It looks like we are now in the market for a M&P 45.

OMG ... how dare you compare The Gun Room to Wild Bill's! By the way some in here talk about Wild Bill's, I swear they were putting Wild Bill's at the same level or lower than TGR. I, personally, have never had a problem with Wild Bill's, but felt TGR was rude. I go in there occasionally, not to buy, but just to compare prices and look at their glass cases. Never once was I bothered with them asking if I needed help ... cause they never asked if I needed any.

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. I was making the point that because I was treated so badly at The Gun Room, I went somewhere else when I wanted to buy a shotgun. I had a decent experience at Wild Bill's and I will go back there again. They have a HUGE selection.

I forgot to mention, The Gun Range also allows rapid fire and rifles on their range. Two BIG bonuses.

Yep. The Gun Room sucks.

Very poor service. I will never set foot in there again.

The Gun Range, however, is awesome. Great range, great staff.

The Gun Range on Watt Ave is by far the best indoor range around. I've shot there many times and the friendly staff do a wonderful job. I highly recommend it if you haven't had the chance yet.

The Gun Room staff treat U like cattle for the range, and when wanting to check out some of there new guns its like one big put out for them to even show you a gun, but people must like the abuse as the range is always packed on the weekends.
The Gun Range is by far the best indoor range i have gone shooting at, very friendly staff and there not a bunch of range Nazis.
Being able to rapid fire is a real treat to.

Default The Gun Range

+1 for the Gun Range. I've shot there many times and have never had a bad experience. Very nice people working there that always make time to answer questions.

The gun room sucks... bottom line.... they take like an hour to do PPT's the range is 1 shot every two seconds, they are overly crowded and they have so many limitations regarding Caliber.... do your self a favor and NEVER go there

I agree totally. The Gun Range on Watt Ave allows rapid fire and they have a .50 Cal that you can rent. It's nice being able to fire my Saiga 308 from a standing position.

The Gun Range is by far the best in Sacramento , Reminds me of the good old days at the Firing Pin in West Sac (Closed long ago) .

I have been meaning to check out the Gun Range. The calibers allowed and the rapid fire allowed are a big deal. I checked out the web site a while back and wondered what kind of insane backstop they have to allow 50 BMG.

The Gun Room could be a much better atmosphere, but like someone else said people must like abuse.

I understand that new shooters probably destroy the target clips pretty fast when allowed to rapid fire, but a little instruction and advice would go a long way rather than keeping everyone from practicing correctly. Most of us can control our guns. Shooting with a one second pause is not very useful, but unfortunately is more common than not.

I don't know. I went to the Gun Room (Range) a few weeks ago while I had some lowers being cerakoted. I had been there before many years ago as well and both times I feel like I was treated just fine.

I live in Vallejo so it's not like I need to defend them for any reason. I will check out the Gun Range though. Probably the same distance from Vallejo.

I'm going to chime in a little here about the Gun Range on Watt Avenue. I'm from San Jose. I often visit Lincoln, it's where the in-laws live by Thunder Valley Casino.
I would rather drive to the Gun Range and practice there than the outdoor range in Lincoln which is a 5 minute drive from the house.
The Gun Range, You're allowed to double-tap and rapid fire your pistol or rifle.
people next to you are good people and even talked to my fellow shooters next to me. I brought my brother in law there and he too had a lot of fun.
Very nice people working there and never had a problem.

I go to the gun range weekly, because I work down the street. I buy reloading stuff there, and do most of my ppt's there. Great staff, nice range. The only complaint I have is the get very busy on the weekends. I went to the gun room about a month ago. They do take a long time for ppt. The stuff was ok, the range was ok. Probably won't go back. My parents live in paradise and the paradise rod & gun club is where I shoot most of the time. Worth the drive for me to shoot at a private range by myself most of the time.

The gun range is by far the better of the two. one of the best in sac i would say. if you have a CCW you can shoot from the holster at the Gun Range. plus they do all the classes to get a ccw on site. the place is awesome and give a military/veteran discount.

It depends who you get when you visit the gun room. Some of them have below average people skills

I was always a bigger fan of "The Gun Range". The Gun Room caused a lot of grief and problems to gun owners over the years who had "tactical" or legal hi-caps. Always trying to spread FUD.

Never ever set foot in the guns room in Elk Grove again. I was there for a ppt transfer and It took them an hour for the transfer and 30 minutes when I went to pick up my gun. It's rediculous they don't even accept your receipt that showed you bought the lock somewhere else. They Want you to purchase their lock which cost $15.00 or you would not be able to pick up your gun. As for the guns range it's perfect ppt transfer was fast and pick up was even faster. The guns range is the only place I going to do ppt transfer or go shoot. They lock it's only cost $5.00.

Post Somebody say Gun Range?

Yep, I do agree. The Gun Range is nice & they will go out of there way to help you if you need it. Friendly staff. I requested a certain Rifle to buy and they got it for me. Good price also. I will be back.

Default Gun Range Gripe

My ONLY gripe about The Gun Range is that there is such a long wait every time I go. I always have a good experience while I'm there, (tacticool dude blasting away with his AR-15 aside)

I like the fact that they'll let you do pretty much whatever you want assuming you're doing it safely. Like rapid fire and drawing from holster (I believe they want to watch you do this or take their class or something first) Lets us CCWers practice our perishable skill someplace fairly close to home.

I will say that I have been to the Gun Room on a number of occasions, and have had a decent experience. Usually I get general retail indifference as opposed to Walmart Rudeness, but that doesn't bother me too much going to the range. Haven't purchased anything from their store yet, so I can't speak to the folks on that side.

Heading up to the Sac gun show tomorrow to look for some more ammo.

Planning to check out The Gun Range after the show. May also stop at The Gun Room -- had no idea where it was previously but a quick map check revealed that I've driven by it many times before. The Gun Room is currently advertising 30-50% off certain accessories and it may be worth stopping just to see what's there. No plans to shoot at either location.

Will report anything interesting that I see or happens there during my visit.

Update: I visited The Gun Range and The Gun Room, after going to the gun show in Sac yesterday. I didn't shoot at either location but here were my general impressions.

The Gun Range had a relatively small selection of firearms, supplies and ammo for sale. I was greeted (not ignored) when I entered and was allowed to browse unmolested. So, the staff seems friendly enough. All of the shooting lanes were taken and there were a lot of people waiting to shoot. There is a small waiting area w/a couple of sofas and chairs but not enough for all of the people waiting.

The Gun Room was much larger and more attractive to me than The Gun Range. It's divided into 2 sides: retail and range. I also greeted in a friendly manner when I entered on both sides and was not given any "attitude" by the staff. The retail side of the place looks huge w/the glass windows and high ceilings. The have a very wide selection of firearms, including hunting arms (not just black guns) which also appealed to me. However, despite the size of the place, their selection of supplies and ammo did not seem to be that large but it was more than was available at The Gun Range.

I also liked the range side of the The Gun Room better than The Gun Range. There are twice as many stations and there's a glass or plexiglass window which allows you to see what's happening at all stations. Good if you're "just visiting" like I was or, in the case of management, to monitor the action. There are cameras to monitor activity on some of the lanes but the guy working there told me they're not working (right now), so he has to walk the line to see what's happening. Only about 1/2 of the lanes were being used when I was there.

Between the 2 places, I would prefer to shoot at The Gun Room because it's closer to where I live and also because it doesn't seem to be as busy. Can't speak to the attitude of the range officers at either location yet but there was very little "control" or supervision exercised when I was there yesterday. I'm not likely to shoot a either location because of how far away there are from where I live but, if I ever do, I'll post any comments about that experience when I do.

Yeah, The Gun Room sucks, and The Gun Range is the best indoor shooting range in the area (climate controlled, excellent ventilation, electronic controlled targets, great staff, good rules). I also like that they turn away people who have been smoking weed... it's happened more than once when I've been there. They don't have the greatest selection of firearms for sale, but they'll order anything you want for a reasonable fee. I buy all my guns there now even if I can find them a bit cheaper elsewhere, just because I want to support their business. Love that place.
