Default Question for Banning locals... spot near Banning.... legal for shooting?

Hey all, long time lurker here, but don't post much, (wealth of info here though - many thanks), but I have a question about a spot I been shooting at lately. Specifically, if it's legal to shoot there.

I don't want to describe how to get there, but I'm guessing if you are local to Banning, then you probably know the spot. So I'll describe it, without giving away directions.

Surprisingly close to town. You can still see the town from the end of the area, although, off in the distance. Lots of trash and debris at the bottom of a shallow ravine, and lots of brass and shotgun shells at the top of the ravine. Not a long range - about 300 yds max if you park at the end. What looks like the foundations of a couple buildings... concrete foundations with large supports and pipes sprouting out of the base. One foundation is kind of hanging over the ravine. Both foundations are all shot to hell. I see lots of folks shooting at the debris in the ravine, and even setting up targets across the ravine, into the mountain on the other side, but I prefer to shoot adjacent to it, along the right side of the ravine where you can get about 300 yds out if you walk up the hill a bit.

So, the question to the locals (if you know the spot); is it legal to shoot there? A friend of mine took me there a few years ago and told me it was BLM land, but I would like to be sure if it's legal to shoot there.

And if you know the spot, I don't care to know the name, so don't advertise it. Also, please don't give out directions as I already know how to get there (and don't really want to advertise to the lurkers working for Kalifornia). Plus, the area really is a mess, so I imagine it might already be on their radar. I try to clean up more than I bring, but man, there is a ton of crap out there... especially in that ravine.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know the area, but if it is BLM land, it may be possible, with their assistance, to have a Calguns clean up. We have done it at other sites (Steele Peak and Bee Cyn. to name two).

We don't post the directions and the if a clean up is scheduled, the directions are given to a general meeting place and then we drive to the location. Sometimes BLM or others are able to arrange a dumpster to put the trash in. Subsequent to the clean up, the members generally then shoot. Sometimes, people bring food and a pot luck or bbq is done.

Eat Dirt and chknlyps2 and some others have organized a few of these events. You might want to keep that in mind for their assistance if you are thinking of organizing a Calguns clean up and shooting event there once it is determined it is a legal area to shoot. The word has gotten around to the BLM and Forest Service that Calguns does clean ups and they appreciate our help.

sorry OP. Riverside County is actually fairly lenient in their shooting ordinance (ordinance #514). However, the area that you are talking about is specifically named as closed to shooting. It used to be the RSD was aware of target shooting going on in that area and would look the other way. Some of their deputies even shot out there.

Bottom line though: not legal, ALSO they started cracking down on shooting there after someone shooting steel ammo at the rocks on the hill started a fire that required a helicopter to put out.

The fire combined with the trash made RSD decide to stop looking the other way and they now enforce no shooting up there.

Is this the place with the ditched stolen cars?
If so there's stories here on CGN about people getting shot at (accidentally, negligently?)
Supposedly someones car even got hit by a stray round.

So yea even if it was legal it sounds like the wild west OP...

But I would take Sleighter's word that its not a legal spot.

Ah, many thanks, and good to know. It always kind of gave me an iffy feeling when I went out there, even though I always see people there. Although, I never really cared to approach any of the folks I seen out there... if you know what I mean.

I know that place and couple of others well, although it's been many years since I've been out there. I live far away now.

Good times though back in the day. Good times.

Sounds like a area we used a few years back, anyway I was at Bee Canyon last weekend a Mad house and no where to setup. We headed out to Steele Peak directly from there same thing along with some teens way back and there alcohol so a day wasted. I am afraid to post and will not post a couple of areas where we can shoot legal they will be short lived if I do..

So does anyone know of any other BLM spots in the area? I am a solo shooter, no alcohol and clean up after myself. PM if you don't want to over expose.

been there before and when u are actually leaving the "spot" there is a city posted sign that reads "no shooting beyond this point" so thats a clear sign that the city knows about the location and the use of firearms
