Default Tumey Hills Clean-up and shoot Jan 4th

As many of you know the Tumney hills main area is pretty littered with trash. I was hoping to get a few of us out there to clean up the area and maybe shoot some more too. I have a 5x8 trailer that I can haul down, unless someone else wants to volunter their truck.

When: Saturday Jan 4th 10am

What to Bring: Rake, Trash Bags, Water to drink, snacks to eat, Guns to shoot!

Why: Because cleaning up our public lands really helps us keep em

Where: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/21100318 We'll meet here and then move to the other area if need be.

I'll check the calendar but if I can make it, I will. It's spelled Tumey, by the way.

@ChaoSS You might hit the Hollister BLM website. They have maps for the BLM areas under their control - Tumey and Panoche and others. http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/holli...ion/tumey.html

But basically if you route to the Fosters Freeze at 42681 West Panoche Road, 93622 and just kind of keep going for a couple of miles you'll be there. That's a nice address to save in your phone/GPS if you want to get ETAs on the road.

Sounds fun! I've never been out there, do you happen to have the GPS coordinates? I will try to make it out there and help out but I need to plan accordingly as I live near the Oakland area.

I do not have the GPS coordinates. But its super simple, drive south on I5 to Panoche Road and exit. Drive west about 3 miles until you come to a gate on the left and a wide area on the right.

I'm game. Pending my work schedule allows.
I'll be in my truck if there's extra trash to haul off.
I've also got a fresh shipment of 7.62 x 39 that's burning a hole in my safe

I'd be up for putting in plenty of work, except I don't know my work schedule/situation. After February my schedule is much more free.

I'm fairly new to shooting as well, so I'd love to meet up with some more folks who are willing to give some tips in person. I've got two kids, 14 & 15 who also like to go shooting.

For now, I go shooting in BLM land near Don Pedro on HWY 49. It's not great, but it's enough for the kids 22 rifles and my wife and I practicing our 9mm EDCs. It's about 80 minutes east from Modesto.

Is this the spot you're talking about? The road through the gate to the south? Looks like a small parking area and south of that is a picture someone tagged of target shooting.

I always like to have my BLM maps with me in case some LEO shows up and gives me grief for shooting (not that I have ever run into that, but just would rather be sure of where I am at, and be able to prove it is BLM land).

Can you tell what map from this grid I'd need for this area? I hate the resolution this page uses.
http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/info/iac/Northern_Map.html

It looks like Mendota, but probably need Coalinga map as well. The maps are just $4, but I want to make sure I get enough coverage.

Nice find, blackandredwarrior. Load that up in Google Earth and you can see a handful of tagged photos there. Here they are directly for reference:

New visitors round-up at Tumey Hills at 36 37' 3.46" N 120 39' 17.96" W

It looks like should be able to make it, it really all depends if I can find a sitter. So really I won't know for sure till Tuesday prior.

I no longer own a truck, but I do have big rakes and some trash bags.

I'm a little south of you, you interested in splitting a ride? Pitch in for gas in my truck, or I'll pitch in for gas in your car or something?

Thats the area I was speaking about. If those of you who've been there before know of a different area that we should work on then please share.

6.5 miles off the freeway is too far. Maybe 1-2 miles off the freeway is the main entrance that goes to the slot canyon / day use area that has the bathroom and some picnic tables and stuff. Another 5 miles past that is the western entrance which has no services (and is actually where I prefer to shoot because not many people go there). I can dig up a map if you don't know what I mean.

Can you give some directions to the BLM land near Don Pedro? I live near Lake Camanche and would love somewhere close to shoot my pistols.

I put the 4th on my calendar to help out. I'm probably 3 hours or so away though. So don't make it at 7am. Lol

I have a truck also.

Yeah I was at the western entrance. That area needs a lot of work.

If we have enough time/room/people we may just hit both spots.

That's bad - usually that area's pretty OK. The day use area usually is FILTHY.

I said main area, I guess its the western entrance from what I've learned. When I was there, shells everywhere, a busted TV, Targets all left up. Not a ton, but def more than there should be.

We're good to go unless the weather is stupid that day. Lets plan on cleaning, shooting, and bring your own food.
