Default CMMG or ATI AR upper?

I'm going to have a spare AR lower a New Frontier poly I'm thinking of making a dedicated AR 22LR looking at both CMMG & ATI this okay or is there another to look at?

The ATI isn't great IMHO... The CMMG is good, the TACCOM is FANTASTIC!!

That Taccom is worth looking into, thanks for the link.

Robert, thanks!

Are 22Lr magazines pretty much interchangeable within AR platforms?

Here's the ones I bought Used in a CMMG dedicated upper on a standard MilSpec JD lower. No changes or mods from 5.56 use.

From the webpage:
Recommended compatible .22 AR conversion units and other firearms:
Ciener/Atchisson
Model 1 Sales
Spikes Tactical
Tactical Solutions
Target Master
Kel-Tec PLR22
Sig Sauer 522
CMMG .22 Kit

Looks like these fit *most* popular conversions and uppers. CMMG is a popular, standardized setup.

Robert

I have had nothing but problems with my CMMG upper. They have literally replaced every part at least once and it is still a paper weight... The only gun purchase I have ever regretted.

you are one of the few.

I had some issues but the taccom reliability kit solve them all
along with buzzing the chamber.

What issues did you have?

Stay far away from ATI and chiappas. They have decent customer service, but you'll append more time sending it back then firing it, especially with the soft metal the chamber is made from, one dry fire and its ruined. Taccom makes good stuff, metal surrounding chamber can take hundreds of dryfires, the cmmg is a solid kit and comes highly reccomended.
My next 22 upper will be a taccom.

What kind of issues?

If its Failures to Fire/Extract/Feed you can get the TACCOM reliability kit and get it taken care of.

op what did you go with?

CMMG for me, I was going to pull the trigger on the TACCOM but decided to go 556 conversion kit instead. . Of course I have the reliability kit and now need another minus the plug, its a pain to remove from the buffer tube.
that 3.4# for a full rifle with red dot, is insane

You can also check out TacSol (well known among the 10/22 crowd). I don't have personal experience, but have heard good things about this one:

Older CMMG stainless or better yet, the TACCOM. All U.S. made.

Any thoughts on a Spikes ST-22 upper?
Going to pop for one of them soon.

^^ This! ^^ They also make this in a flat top 16" bull barrel design too. The bolt in these is in every sense a 10/22 bolt. Yes, it's a proprietary upper but these things just go and go and they're also built by Nordic too I've been told. I owned a Nordic NC22 for a few years and never had a issue.

If you got extra $$$ maybe the JPNC-22. That 18" fluted barrel looks sexy as hell.

What issues did you have?
I've been through 7 bad magazines, 2 snapped firing pins, I'm on my second barrel, third forward assist, second hammer and the list of problems goes on...

Never had problems with light strikes though. Their parts are just made from crap material. They break, snap and deform under normal use.

So I built a nice upper, freefloat handguard, buis, dpms slickside upper receiver, taccom 7.5" barrel, and an extra chiappas bolt I had...Damn thing will shoot 1-2 rds before it stove pipes or light strikes, this with taccom reliability kit installed. I think a cmmg or other solid manufactured bolt will do the trick.

It sounds like you got a lemon. Should have gone to Toyota of Orange where you won't get a lemon. The CMMG upper I had was awesome. I wish I kept it.

Spikes will either run or it won't. If it does, congrats. If it doesn't, it never will be right.

The DPMS is very reliable and has good acuracy.
Problem is, they were made by Nordic. Nordic isn't producing so DPMS will not be producing any uppers.
This was my concern when they came out.
Been there and done that with DPMS AR .22's in the past.

For what it's worth, I love my CMMG upper. I felt like the forward assist they engineered was causing more harm than good so I took it out. Other than that, highly recommended.

I was close to a CMMG from Cabela's but a member here was selling a Striker ST-22 I did a little research and read mostly good reviews on them, they are supposed to like Federal bulk & I have 8 of the 550 packs of those.
Upper should be here in a couple of days.

My new to me Spikes ST-22 upper showed up today I haven't test fit it on the lower yet but it looks brand new with very little use.
Monday I'll swap it out and hope for a quick range trip.

I have the TACCOM kit and it didn't really help the reliability issues in my CMMG upper. It continues to be a regretted purchase for me. I'd rate it about as low as buying a Taurus (which for me is REAAALLLLLYYYY low).

Are 22Lr magazines pretty much interchangeable within AR platforms?
Black Dog Machine .22 lr magazines are a relative standard with .22 lr AR uppers.

CMMG, Spikes, Nordic, and DPMS .22 uppers use them.

OP, get the CMMG dedicated upper. I have one and it's been flawlessly reliable and accurate. Great product. Midwayusa has them in stock, 44mag.com has 10 round blackdog mags and 25 round rebuild kits.
