Default Did a little load testing for the Ruger No 1 (270 Win)

A couple of months ago I bought my first Ruger No 1 and my first 270 Win. Since I live in the Condor zone I thought that I'd try some loads using the 140 grain Barnes TSX bullets and H4350 powder.

I took it out Sunday morning to a friend's ranch and set up a portable bench on his range. After reading all the horror stories on the internet about how fussy the Ruger No 1s are I wasn't expecting too much but I was pleasantly surprised at the results.

I put up my old target board and of course forgot my stapler so I had to paste over the old bullet holes and shot the following groups. The small targets are 1" in diameter and the big ones are 2".

It looks like everything tried will shoot minute of deer and some of the loads show some real promise. I've ordered some more 140 grain and 130 grain TSXs to continue the testing.

Here's the rifle:

I went through maybe one box of bullets before I settled on the load for my No. 1 in 22-250.

I have shot many, many rounds through it, but never changed the load again.

Dane,

You know me, I have as much fun playing with loads as I do serious shooting.

Frank,

I am the opposite. I hate load development!

A good friend of mine has a No.1 in .220 Swift

After having a smith slap on a nicer barrel and painstakingly working on various reloads, he got that rifle to reliably group into a quarter at 200 yards.

One common thing from load to load was a flyer. Always a flyer. I don't think it was shooter error, either.

I've heard that flyers are very common to Ruger No 1s and that a lot of it is due to the forearm hanger design and the amount of pressure on the forearm. I've been shooting this with my forward hand holding the forearm and resting the back of my hand in a sandbag so that I'm consistent with the pressure.

I picked up some TSX bullets in 130 and 140 grains and a box of Nosler E-Tips in 130 grains to try also.
