Martial Blade Concepts (MBC) is an edged-weapon system specifically designed to meet the needs of today's concerned citizen and armed professional. Based on Michael Janich’s extensive analysis of the Filipino martial arts and many other systems, MBC takes combat-proven tactics and adapts them to modern tools, threats, and legal concerns. The result is a practical, easy-to-learn system that is ideally suited to modern self-defense.

Like all real self-defense, MBC tactics focus on “stopping power”—the ability to immediately and decisively stop an assailant from continuing his attack. To this end, MBC emphasizes an in-depth understanding of human physiology and the most effective methods of targeting key structures with small, legal-to-carry knives. Sometimes called “biomechanical targeting,” this approach has been thoroughly reviewed and validated by leading experts in the field of tactical medicine.

Because these techniques are so effective and innovative, its founder was named Black Belt Magazine’s Weapons Instructor of the Year. He was also one of 12 subject-matter experts selected for TSA’s air crew self-defense program and continues to teach seminars and training courses to Law Enforcement and Military groups around the world.

Although Michael Janich is best known for the MBC system, his teaching curriculum includes a broad range of other skills, including Counter-Blade Concepts (CBC—unarmed defenses against knives), empty-hand tactics, the use of sticks, canes, and improvised weapons, and the use of firearms. These skills are integrated with each other and with principles of tactical awareness, avoidance, and de-escalation to provide a comprehensive, extremely adaptable approach to personal protection. Collectively, all of Janich’s teachings fall under the umbrella of “Damithurt Silat”—his all-inclusive and decidedly non-traditional approach to modern personal defense.

As a recognized expert, the founder has been published in more than a dozen magazines, including Black Belt, Inside Kung Fu, Tactical Knives, Fighting Knives, Combat Knives, American Handgunner, Guns Combat Annual, S.W.A.T., and many others. Janich has recently earned critical acclaim as a co-host and subject-matter expert for Outdoor Channel's new hit personal defense series The Best Defense and The Best Defense Survival. He has also been featured numerous times on radio and national television, including appearances on Ripley’s Believe It or Not! and the Outdoor Channel’s popular Shooting Gallery series.

Last week, I was doing this training in Canada at the Solicitor General's training center in Alberta (their version of the Attorney General). They had Law Enforcement from all over Western Canada learning the material to take back to their agencies. They have updated their training based upon this material and have credited 3 officer saves to it.
