Default if you cut a barrel, do you need to relocate gas port?

Just curious if you cut say a 20" or 18" barrel if you have to relocate or modify the gas port to adjust for the correct gas on a DI rifle.

In my case, the barrel length to cut that I am considering is a 18" SS LW-50 barrel to a 14.5" w/permanent brake/comp to make it 16". Also, mine is a lightweight barrel that is just over 0.5" (don't have a caliper) thick.

if this is possible, I might consider sending this out.

I would imagine it depends on the size of the existing gas port, and at what length it was drilled. You might have better luck posting in the centerfire rifles forum, rather than in the gallery.

You need to ask Randall (ar15barrels) in the Gunsmithing forum.

If you have a rifle-length gas system and you cut your barrel down to 14.5" you will have a very short dwell time and I doubt it would even cycle.

waste of time for something that drastic, just buy the actual barrel or upper you want.

This is the gallery btw
