Question Alabone Season

Any other aquatic mammals have plans for the opener on the 1st?

Haven't had a chance to drive up and scope out the water conditions but from the recent buoy data its seems pretty choppy near Pt Area and north. Anyone in the area have better info?

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/

Post your pics when you get 'em.

Happy hunting and be safe out there.

Abalone is the correct spelling me thinks. And no but would love to learn how to get them as I hear they are tasty little sea creatures.

I had ab for the first time at the duck opener dinner. It was the most tasty thing I've ever eaten.

I'm all set for the 1st and I'm even taking time off from work to hit the waters on the day the season opens. I'm trying to find some good places because I used to go around Point Arena when I was a kid but they've got that whole area closed off as a WLPA.

I'm sure we'll figure something out, but I've got all my gear ready, and I even bought a decent light set that will come in handy for Scuba too. I'll also keep my eye out for some Rock Scallops.

Whats the WLPA? is this closure new or from last year? I go every year nearby to Gualala on Mothers day weekend to a big camp out where many of us dive for abalone and then have a huge fry and potluck on Saturday. I find abalone tasty but after diving for it I appreciate it even more. I only eat at the campout since we get the other campers to clean and Pound the #$#@ out of it.

I think the reference is to the "MLPA" marine life protected area

I once heard that one can develop specific personality traits as they spend more and more time with their associates. So I hypothesize I'm spending way too much time with the jeanyuses on CGN.

Yeah, MLPA. Sorry...

So, that's the extent of my knowledge of the area. I'll be up there looking for kelp beds, and tidepools. I guess I'm just going to have to "wing it". Don't know much about the surrounding areas because my family owns land in Point Arena. Never had to go anywhere else.

We were thinking of looking at that Salt Point area, but we're not sure.

I go every year to a very popular place a couple miles past Gualala you can't miss it because there's a long strip where people can park on the side of the road so Im not giving anything away here. You hike down and then scale a small cliff that has a rope attached, not bad I bring kids and dogs with me when i go. If its calm and good visibility our whole group usually gets there limits. The Good divers who can go deep usually get 10 inchers and win the "Golden Abalone" at fish fry

April doesn't have any good tides (-1' or more) until the 26th so won't be going until at least then.

Nope! They changed the rules while you weren't looking.

Virtually all of Pt Arena is closed off, as are a lot of other areas. I just want to try to get some abs without getting fined.

Well, we struck out on Monday but I went back out on Tuesday and caught my limit. One was a nice sized one, and the other two were decent "keepers". Go get em, guys! Looks like it's gonna be a good year.

Good Deal! I got out yesterday even though the swell was pretty high and landed a limit. I'd say 90% of the ones I saw were under-sized and I was diving in a pretty remote spot I guess that red-tide a couple years ago really took a toll on the population?

That's why all of the Point Arena area is closed down. It decimated the population.

It was good where we were, though....

Point Arena was not closed because of an Abalone die off but part of the MLPA closure put in place by our wonderful government and the fine members of our state enviro-nazi groups that don't like citizens using the outdoors and killing helpless fish and game

Oh so true. We have the "wonderful" MLPA to help restore sea life in So Cal waters. I remember all my spots in Laguna Beach and taking a bus to these spots to surf when the swell was up and spearfish when it was flat, before I could drive. These were places my grandfather took me to fish and my father showed me spots also. Now, can't take my boys to fish the same areas.

The MLPA in Orange County closed pretty much all of Laguna Beach with great rock structures for spearfishing and fishing tight on the beach from a boat.

MLPA Bunch of money and private intrest groups that support these Enviro-nazis. Instead of trying to promote "conservation", they believe "preservation" is better just to close off to anyone.......take one fish for food, release one or two more for future generations or practice catch and realease (hook and line mainly. Spearfishing is HIGHLY selective take). Same as when I go hunting, selective shooting and knowing your shot placement. Shooting on BLM land, cleaning up your area of trash you created and then going one extra step by picking up other trash that is not yours (even if it is one piece of trash, every bit helps).

Sidenote....... Off Laguna Beach (near the old Aliso Pier), there is a sewer runoff pipe and dumps poop water when overflow from rains. And they blame recreational fisherman from all backgrounds for poor water conditions and loss of sealife?

I could go on and on about this whole MLPA, but got to go back to work. Sorry about the off topic on Ab season, but definitely recommend for anyone to go try and enjoy a great fishery along some beautiful coast lines. Abalone is great to eat and you can also spear some tasty rockfish, Ling Cod and Cabezon for add eats.

My comment was based purely on what some of the locals were saying when we were up there. Given your location on your profile, I'm pretty sure you would know the reasons better than I do.

We used to get them off the rocks at Santa Cruz island in the late 70s while hunting sheep and pigs. Just go down to smugglers and go west along beach to the rocks and wade.

They are only allowed to be taken north of the San Francisco Bay mouth now days. The fine for taking them in so cal is very heavy too.

Southern California does still have small black abalone. Central California has a decent population of black and pinto abs. Up north, it's all red abalone.
There are still good places to dive on the south Mendocino coast. You just have to be able to spot good habitat.
From Point Arena, head north to Elk or south to Spring Ranch. Both have great spots to dive.

I actually saw a white abalone in So Cal 2 years ago at about 130', was shocked.

Little Scorpion against the cliffs in the 60's and 70's, pinks and greens, hundreds of them.

Santa Rosa Island was reds central. San Miguel Island still has some, they catch poachers every so often.

Been diving Ocean Cove down to Stillwater for 40 years... We camp in the OC campground most of the time. I go through the fence opening in the campground and head in the direction of Stillwater and get in off the cliffs from a few access points. Always limit out if conditions are favorable...... !!!!
