Drew is going to be there with as many Cadets as can come up. Great news, unfortunately, most of the Cadets are busy this weekend so we won't get the fifteen we did in January. Thank you Drew for all your help!

I was rereading this post and back near the top of page 2 SoCalMountainMan said something about getting me a ride to the cleanup. Just wanting to clarify, I wasnt the one needing a ride. I was telling Simply115 that I could not give him a ride as I should be bringing a +1 and my truck only seats 2. I dont know if Simply115 has found a ride or not. He lives in Ventura so if anyone is coming through there, contact him. He posted on page 1 of this thread. Sorry I didnt catch that earlier.

See you all on Sat.

Checked with my other +1 and he is a go! So I'll have myself +2
Prizes look awesome, looking forward to getting that place back in order. I've not been up for about 5 or 6 weeks, how is it looking now? It wasn't too bad when I was last up there

I was up last weekend for Cinco de Freeze our Butts off and the main line didn't look too bad from what I could see, fog kept visibility to about 25 yards. The lower range is messier, it always is, smaller area = higher concentration of garbage. That pile we had left over from the January cleanup near the lower range is still there, we will need to get rid of that as well.

Good amount of trash strewn on the surrounding hills, the wind carries the lighter stuff up there.

Overall, we don't have nearly as daunting a task as we had on January 26th. We are looking at about 43 volunteers confirmed, half a dozen maybes and who knows what Socalmountainman will bring from our Facebook group?

Sounds good!
We've got three shovels, a rake and if I can get to go buy one tonight, a wheelbarrow that we'll be bringing, so that should help a bit

I'll be there with RedMonkey bright and early, probably 0730. My +1 (father) will not be joining us.

On a side note, I'm hoping I can salvage some useable brass unless the place has already been picked over by tomorrow... I'll have a 5gal bucket with me, I'd like to fill it. Any calibers I can't personallyt use, I'll save it for the Reloading Club.

When I was up there last Sunday, I noticed a decent amount of .223 brass laying around. It was too damn cold to pick it up though, I should have brought a heavier coat, with the wind and fog was like the moors in Scotland.

According to NOAA, tomorrow we will enjoy a high of 74 degrees and sunny. Yeah!

1 shovel, 1 weed/soil rake, couldnt find the leaf rake. I am bringing a couple folding chairs, extra hearing protection and a coffee maker, I have a 120vac 400 watt transformer for my SUV. depending on how many pots of coffee we make I may need to have someone jump start my car.

A big THANKS to everyone that came out and supported this very worthy cause. I also want to thank Capybara, SoCalMountainman, gtturborex and Deadbolt for their efforts and contributions to make today the great success that it was.

I'm sorry we didn't have enough prizes to giveaway for everyone to enjoy. Wait... EVERYONE scored a prize not once, but twice. One lucky guy won 3 three times!!

See you all at the next one!

Don't forget RM, we ended up bundling prizes too, many of our volunteers won triple swag packs (CGN Sweatshirt, Hat and T-shirt) and most importantly, many of our volunteers got to meet Kestryl and saw the almost mythical CGN Truck in person!

It was a truly GREAT day, thanks to the hard work of our volunteers, Marborg, Ranger Larry, Red Monkey, Socalmountainman, Gtturborex, TacticalPlinker, Deadbolt and everyone else who went above and beyond including the National Forest Service Firefighters, our immensely talented tractor driver (whose name I neglected to get, he was always behind the wheel!), the Marborg guys who delivered our dumpsters and picked them up . We began at around 7:00 AM and the range was spotless by 1:30 PM and then everyone took out their guns and had some serious fun shooting.

If you are a VC or Central Coast Calgunner and you didn't make it today, I would like to say, "too bad, we'll see you up there sometime" but what I really want to say is "Man, did you miss out! Typical beautiful Santa Barbara day, 80 degrees with a cool breeze, nature's beauty, good friends, killer prizes, it really doesn't get any better than this!" When we have our next cleanup or special event day up at the Glass Factory, you really owe it to yourself to make it up there, on days like today, it is a pristine jewel of a place where everyone was cool, everyone was a safe shooter and we had a ton of fun.

I have to say that our cleanup days are some of the most gratifying days I have ever had in my entire time shooting.

Will post pictures as soon as I dig out the camera and I also shot a time lapse video of the cleanup I will also post soon.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO WAS THERE, WE COULDN'T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU!

The range looked great afterwards. One of the highlights of the day was talking to mountain bikers about what we were up to. I saw others talking to them, too. Good will to the others who use the land goes a long way, I think.

My kids had a blast. Thanks again for the hot dogs, water and the prizes. My son was stoked about the nra membership, too!

Very cute picture. I wish I would have had time to talk with the Mountain Bikers, glad that we offered water and snacks to them, nothing like showing them that Calgunners are sociable and responsible.

Was that your son who won the NRA membership? Is your son on CGN? If so, have him PM me with his info or e-mail me (i gave him my card) and I will get his NRA membership to him.

I wanted to say thank you as well to everyone who showed up and helped out, including the fire dept. Without that tractor, our job would be much tougher and without the dumpsters from Marborg it would be impossible.

I also wanted to say that it was great to finally meet some of you in person, especially Capybara and although I neglected to introduce myself (my brain was fried) it was nice to meet the man behind CalGuns (Kes).

I'm exhausted and a cold shower never felt so good. But I was happy to do my part. I look forward to seeing some before & after pictures and the time lapse footage.

Thanks again.

It was definitely great to see all the support and the gun community coming together for a good cause. Plus winning a shirt/hat was sweet too.

"Lost & Found" notice, I was one of the last to leave and noticed that some gear had been left behind. Specifically there were 3 rakes (2 black and 1 green as I recall), one of those wide shovels and a Trash picker-upper. Not wanting to just leave them there I took them in my car. So if you happen to be missing any of the above tools let me know and I'll try to get it to you.

Great to meet all of you, it was a very productive day.

I talked with Larry and one of the Firefighters and have an idea. Instead of the US Forest Service spending money on installing permanent targets, they should partner with the Fire Department and buy or make portable ones.

Have the station at the bottom of the hill rent them for $20 a day. The renter signs an agreement to pay for the stand if they dont bring it back or if its destroyed, (like what happened to my stand when a few of you centerfire guys decided to blast away at my rimfire target stand).

This idea comes from a range I once visited where they drilled holes in boulders, then placed the boulders on the far side of a berm. The targets you rented where on poles you stuck into those holes. We had to leave a State ID card to rent the targets. The targets weighed like 50lbs and just pushed any debris out of the hole, normally beer cans. You just had to bring the target back to get your ID back.

The Firefighter told me that station is normally manned during business hours (not 24/7). So as long as managing the rentals didnt take up too much time, the benefit is cleaner ranges and extra revenue for the Station.

Thanks for coming out to help us CWDraco. That's an interesting idea.

Just to be clear, the Forest Service was not going to pay anything for them in our plan. We (the CGSSA) were going to raise the money and solicit donations from the companies that make the steel targets. We also know that we will need to or three sets of targets as they will only last one season so we need to design them so that a welder can somewhat easily change out the steels from the poles when they become too shot up. Yesterday, up on the hill, I hauled out what were the last remnants of that steel oxygen cylinder and at 110 yards, that tank looked like swiss cheese. I am thinking that we should go for AR550 targets, a bit thicker, and we know that they will be destroyed but anything is better than idiots hauling TVs and junk out there to shoot.

The rental idea is intriguing, we will definitely discuss that, but I am not sure that that idea does anything to reduce the amount of trash that stupid people haul out to the range and leave. Our goal for installing the steels isn't to make the GF the premier destination for cheap shooters to shoot for free, the goal is significantly reduce the amount of garbage left on the range by inconsiderate shooters.

It will be interesting to see how significantly installing the steels reduces our garbage for our cleanup days next year. We now have metrics to track it.

January 26th cleanup = 40 tons of garbage removed
March 11th cleanup = 16 tons of garbage removed
The next cleanup will probably be in the Fall in prep of the range re-opening after Fire Season.

Our idea is to raise the money and install the steels sometime either late Summer or early Fall. We will partner with the Forest Service to make sure that we have filled out all of the proper paperwork, archeological survey, etc. so it remains to be seen if we CAN even install the steels but we are optimistic. The Forest Service seems to like the idea. Interestingly, Ranger Larry yesterday told me that in the 1970s, the GF looked almost as good as we left it yesterday, very little trash and refuse. It seems that thirty years ago, shooters took pride and personal responsibility in keeping their shooting areas clean. Not so much anymore.

I knew a guy who went to garage sales, bought about 50 bikes, then fixed them up and rented them at the beach. He made like $200 a day.

Some smart guy who lives near there should assemble PVC target stands and sell them there on the weekend.

While I like the ingenuity of the bike guy it does go against what we are aiming for. This is a free area to shoot, if we begin to charge people for targets they will bring there own trash. So its some what self defeating, what we do up there now is for the love of the site and our shooting community. Free fixed targets up there is about the only thing to curb trash build up short of the rangers ticketing.

Update:

Just got back from the range.... People were impressed with how clean it was and wanted to participate... That's the good news... The bad news is one TV in the upper lot and a huge pile of newly broken glass about where the rock was moved for the tractor....

I really think we should post 'Range Rules' on the steel framework already existing.... I know everyone is worried that it will get shot up but so what... Maybe we could offer a reward for reporting the vandals :-)

Jeez, people begin polluting it the same day we complete the cleanup? I can't say it surprises me.

Thought you guys might like to see a little time lapse video I shot of the cleanup yesterday, nothing fancy but you can see what we accomplished.

And here are the pictures. Between babysitting the time lapse camera, directing traffic, picking up trash, etc. I didn't have nearly as much time to shoot stills as I would have liked.

For the next cleanup/event, we will be asking for a Calgunner volunteer photographer, we really need to document our cleanups better but it is too difficult to coordinate the event AND shoot quality images.

And most importantly, the winner of our volunteer prize drawing, Calgunner SilentPea with the Marlin Model 60W he won, generously donated by Calgunner Dougolupski.

Hey Capy, I'd like to volunteer my girlfriend for the next shoot. She's done some work as a professional photographer and she told me that she would be happy to help out. She might even get her hands dirty too.

EDIT: Forgot to say, very nice pictures and the video was really cool as well.

I've been lurking on this thread for a couple weeks now. I was trying to make it up but I couldn't swing it. Dang it!

Great Work everybody! Thanks for organizing this Cap!

I'm from SB, born and raised. I learned how to shoot up on East Camino Cielo in the early 80's. My friend and I were up there the Saturday before Easter. That area to the left where the small pistol range is was trashed. If someone has pics of that area I'd like to see the "after".

Thanks Again for being good stewards. I'll try to make it this fall!

@ gtturborex; Yes, the 2 roll off large dumpsters from Marborg were both mostly filled. The main range dumpster was probably more so.

Hopefully someone got a picture, but I can tell you were left it just as clean as the rest of the range. Also, we had the tractor tear down that large metal frame that was originally used as a sign holder. That was an interesting task... But now that space is more open.
