Default Ammo too precious to use for fun

I have ammo. I've stocked some just only before everything went nuts. However, how much is enough? From what it looks like, this shortage may not let up for quite some time. Given that, I don't want to use any of my stock unless its for a good reason.(ie HD or zeroing a new scope). Was hoping to get into shooting sports this year like 3-Gun but ammo is just too precious right now to use for the sake of fun.

How are all you competitive shooters dealing with the current ammo shortage?

Don't know about the 'comp guys, but like you, I got into shooting/stocking in September, right before the election and further panic buys. And like you, I've slowed down my shooting considerably. For example, I was going to the range weekly, sometimes more, but not with the sparse 'ammo inventories these days.

Sadly, all I do now is just buy whatever box of 'ammo I can find and then stash it-the guns are just gathering dust...

I reload all my own ammo but the pieces are really hard to come by, so I haven't shot anything in a while and really am not planning on it anytime soon

Dept. of Homeland Security has stockpiled 1,000,000,000 rounds of .40 cal.

I'd like to have at least 4,000 rounds of each caliber. In the meantime, it'd be a nice if I could go to Turners and buy 100 rounds of 9mm.

I'm glad I was able to stock up on all my reloading components before all the craziness happened. I was fortunate enough to meet a couple of old timers who were getting out of reloading. Got it all dirt cheap.

starting to see 9mm, 45 acp, and even 223 come back into stock from online vendors. Local walmarts are seeing those calibers come in (but selling out quickly). They do sell out but I tracked one site who had 45acp available for over 24 hours before it was gone.

I'd say we're over the worst part of the hump but it will be a few more months before walking into your LGS to buy ammo isn't a crap shoot.

I keep enough for home defense, and when I get enough to justify the time and expense of heading to the range, I go shoot...which good is stockpiling if you never use it? Unless you are worried about SHTF I guess

I go and shoot most weekends. I stocked up years ago. I am down to about 1000 rounds of mil 223 but have 4000+ reloads and stuff to do several thousand more.
Plenty of 22RF and many other different cartridges.
Learned long ago that the cost will just go up over the years and it gets crazy scarce and costly at times. Still shooting ammo from 10+ years ago. One day I will need to restock but will do so when the price comes back down

I try to shoot at least once a month. Turners is picked clean and when I can get it I buy from big 5 .22lr remington match for $6 a box and fiochi 7.62x39 for $16 a box. The last time I was at my local shooting range and I bought the last 100 rounds of .22 lr they had. I have never seen ammo this scare before in my life (18 years). It looks like I will be shooting the 870 for a while.

Want cheap plinking ammo? Google "Hammond Game Getter" - 5 cents a round.

Get one of these:
http://www.bugasalt.com/

- You can plink with it, 50 shots before you need to reload!
- You can hunt with it, crickets/flies/earwigs/moths/roaches

I shoot my AK47 much more. They seem to stock it up at the Gun Range. I don't use from my stash and just buy there and shoot.

And there is always first person shooters. LOL.

3-gun, Tactical Rifle
$25 to shoot a competition, 200-300 rnd count for 3-6 stages, equals ~$250 day IF I can replace the ammo.

I just can't afford to deplete the stash or the bank acct.

Red face

I began stockpiling, when saw the writing on the wall with the election, back duirng the summer...

... of '92.

Consequently, I'm engaging in a little eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil capitalism at the moment (before Der Kommissar Obamassar outlaws THAT, too... ), but I still have more than I'll ever be able to shoot.

I'm fairly certain my house & my workplace both, already have the laser-painted "X" on them, for a future drone strike...

If you don't have enough ammo to go shoot some of it, you don't have enough ammo period.

Live and learn.

I haven't shot much in the last year because, I haven't got around to casting and reloading enough. So, I mainly just shoot .22lr. I think I'm down to about 15K rounds of .22lr right now. When I get down to about 10K, I'll start worrying or just cast up some bullets and reload.

I haven't shot metallic in months, ever since BHO got elected. I shoot skeet just about every week, but all I do with rifle and pistol is reload. And for the people who say components aren't available, they aren't looking hard enough. I've bought the powder, bullets and primers for 2000 rounds of .45 just this week alone.

i have 3 mosins and over 2,000 rounds of ammo i bought for .18c a bullet. i will buy more. i have other rifles and ammo for them but my main focus is shooting my mosins. i shoot every 3 weeks and plan to keep my stock up even if the price goes up. the mosin is a basic, reliable, POWERFUL gun to shoot. i have 1,000 rounds of NATO for my M1A and 1,000 for my SKS. i plan on shooting my 22s a lot more also. wish i bought even more federal 525 pacs of 22lr at WM for 19 bucks.

Simple, to keep playing the game, you need at least 2 years worth of components. For me, about 50,000 rounds. I shoot USPSA once a week.

Everyone knew this was going to happen after Obama got elected in 2008. Did you all just forget and think it wouldn't happen again???

Stupid once, but stupid twice???

The old timers are always right and the kids never learn, until they screw themselves a few times and learn from the old timers. I've been building stock since the 2000 AWB. Once I went through that I figured ammo was a precious commodity. Paid $2.99 a box of 20 for AE .223's back then. Now if you can find them you have to pay $9 at Walmart or $20 at LGS's.

I feel the way too. This is why I no longer sit on a large stash of ammo.
If ammo is too precious to shoot, sitting on 1000 rounds is the same as sitting on 5, or 10 thousand rounds,

Since can't afford to shoot any of it, might as well stash a tiny amount for defense or SHTF.

If you have too ask how much is enough, you don't have enough. If SHTF and you plan on staying in the house you will need alot more than if you are on foot. You can only carry so much. My goal is to have around 3,000 rounds of each cal. I am there on the 9MM. Still working on that goal for .223, 38, 357 & 12 ga. Extra mags important also.

I don't shoot competitive, but with ammo and component availability have been shooting less and drinking more. I plan on using my bow more and maybe picking up fishing again. I haven't gone in a few years now.

I'm taking it easy. I don't want to add to the frenzy. High prices are taking the fun out of everything in the US.
If you keep buying high priced ammo, it may just stay high priced.
If you hang onto it, it will remain a commodity that wont loose value.
I still shoot 22 for fun pinking and 5.45 & 7.62 for the bigger bang...........................> build an AK

Shooting is a skill that quickly degrades, like weightlifting. You have to get in there and keep training to maintain your edge. Go shooting, just take your time and aim more.

If you have ammo you are called a hoarder. If you don't you are a dumb ***! Now I don't have much ammo prolly 1 to 3 k per gun BUT reloading components galore. I have decided to keep it simple less calibers allow me to buy more components in bulk to save money. I just use 6 powders for all my guns.
