I generally carry a g17 with my legal, standard mags. I used to carry a 1911, but i prefer the extra capacity and the fact that my g17 get better with scratches while my 1911 makes me cringe. The last few times I have gone camping/backpacking, i havn't carried because CA makes it difficult/illegal/confusing/a huge hassle.\

It all depends on the area i'm camping in. if i'm wimp camping i just sleep with my SR9 next to me. but if i'm really camping i'll have my sr9, a 12g and my AR all within reach and ready to go. when you're far out you have to worry about two legged and four legged wildlife....

"Family camping": 870 in truck/tent and .40 Px4 Storm or S&W 686 .357 mag. on me or in truck/tent depending on where we are.
"Me camping": I've got everything on me.

Whenever I go camping I always carry my stag varminter with a spare A2 upper, a ruger 10/22, a Remington 870, 3 mosins, my lever action in 44 mag and 45-70, and my savage 10. Then I always have a 1911, a P95, 2 super blackhawks, and my s&w 22a.

In the car I keep two reloading presses 8 pounds of various powder, 10,000 mall rifle primers, 10,000 large rifle primers, 10,000 large pistol primers. and 1000 projectiles for each caliber and in three different weights.

I also pack 5,000 rounds of birdshot, 1,000 rounds of buckshot and 3,000 rounds for every other caliber.

Lastly I take two bowie knives, 6 kershaw folders, a tomahawk, a hatchet, an axe and a samurai sword.

Most of my camping trips are to the desert to go shooting/riding. Guns are there anyways!

Usually, over the hundreds of times i've been out camping, a gun is not needed. BUT what if, there was a situation, now this is a "what if" situation. Maybe 1 in a thousand chance of happening. Your camping with your family and this guy shows up

http://www.yosemitegold.com/yosemite/sund.htm

The odds of that is unlikely, but there is always a chance. And you decided to tell youself you don't need a gun when your camping. Where it's legal to have your gun, that you purchased legally.

The only one time i ever saw my dad pull out his winchester 1300 12ga was when a bear was walking toward us at the river. He was looking at me like i was a fillet minion. My dad racked, shot one toward the backstop next to the bear and scared it off.

Again this is a 1 in thousand chance, but if my dad did not have a gun, and did not fire that round, i wouldn't be here. I don't even remember the details because i was so young.

Personally, i don't ever plan on using a firearm for self defense. In most cases no one ever does, but there is that small percentage, and the difference of having a firearm and not when it's between life and death during that small percentage is worth having and carrying a little extra weight.

I started this tread because when i was out camping, the next door camper had a firearm as well. And the few ppl that i came accross ALL HAD Some sort of protection.

A "gun" during my camping trip took maybe .001 percent of effort and time. I didn't go camping because i wanted to take my lead throwing tool out to the woods. I went camping becaues I love the outdoors.

So to give a simple answer, i'd rather have a gun and not use it, then need it and not have it.

I herd foot steps, sounded like a mid-sized mountain lion, so I kepted the fire burning through the night. Also have seen bears, usually they don't bother campers while the camp fire is burning. The camper next to us had a glock 23.

I had a remington 870 wingmaster, with pistol grip and barrel cut to exact minimum legal length. Overall length and barrel length are all legal. And i had a taurus 605 357magnum. The shotgun stayed locked in the car except for at night when we were sleeping in the tent. The revolver which is my trunk gun was on me. All guns were in locked containers when we were traveling and or in areas of population.

Your campsite is too close to the creek. If a cloudburst happens up the drainage some where you will find yourself trying to swim in ice water while surrounded by a sleeping bag!

The barrels are too short on both of your guns. Short barreled magnums are never the best choice. They just blow a lot of powder out the barrel, creating a lot of noise and flash and not contributing much to the power or velocity of the bullet. They are a tail told by an idiot, full of sound and furry, signifying nothing! In that barrel length a 38spl. +P will give you just as good or better performance without as much noise and blinding flash!

A pistol grip only shotgun is not needed out in the woods where you have plenty of room to maneuver. And that gun has the worst pistol grip for the purpose; the grip needs to be more vertical, more straight up and down. The barrel needs to be at least 18 & inches long to avoid Randy Weaver Syndrome.

On the other hand you have one dang cute wife, take care of her!

Sorry but you asked?

ahhh, is that why my wife wanted to go up a little higher off the creek. She
said something about not to go close to water at night, because
there is alot of demons close to water at night. I was a good 25 feet away,
but next time i'll be sure to pack some sea salt 12gauge rounds.

Meplat

You made some good points, the 357magnum is what i keep in my car all the time so i just decided to leave it there, chrono shows a huge difference
even in a short barrel when comparing 38 special +p and 357mag defensive rounds. The remington wingmaster is my home defense
setup, i've shot slugs out the thing with great results. I don't get maximum velocity, but it's well over the firepower i need to stop a bear. I took that shotgun instead of my
remington 1100, or my mossberg 500 both with two barrels, long and short, because i didn't want to lug the extra weight.
The pistol grip on the remington wingmaster is perfect for me, the vertical grips put too much kick on my hand, and doesn't spread
recoil evenly. with the speed pistol grip, i can shoot slugs all day and it will not hurt my hands.

Although next time i go out camping, i'm just thinking about just taking my glock 17, or my Xd45.

I carry a Glock 23, 1911, S&W 629, S&W 686+, M1A, Bushmaster, Mossberg 500, or a combination of other guns. It all depends where I'm camping and how I'm camping. Rural I bring a few handguns, shotgun, and AR. Backpacking I bring a handgun and bear spray. Campsite camping with the wife and kids I'll just bring one of my EDC guns that are on my CCW.

I'm also a Chinese American and my kids are the 5th generation here in the US. My family has also been firm believers in the 2nd Amendment and the US Constitution, since they immigrated here. Had a run in with some Rednecks one time on a camping trip. Here's the old thread and the reason why I always carry on camping trips. This was about a decade ago, so don't mind the gear we were wearing. Although I still have it I rarely use it anymore

Since my camping trips almost always involve shooting, I take just about everything with me. My shotgun is next to my sleeping bag, loaded with 00 buck. My Hi Point 995s are loaded and ready. I agree that there are some sketchy 2 legged creatures to worry about. We've run into some fiesty raccoons too. Funny, we camp upper Kern and Sequoias. Blast off a few shots of the Mosins and critters don't seem to come around much.

Glock 26 with tritium sights. Ammo is Federal HP with heavy 147 gr. bullets to reduce blast with the short barrel.

I'm just curious, why is there a roll of toilet paper in the picture of you and your wife?

I've taken my XD45 camping many times.
Bought a Ruger SP101 4" 357 that I load Buffalo Bore 38+p hard cast.
It sports a nice custom wood grip and a Triple K holster.
Carries very well around camp and hiking with my hunting license or where otherwise legal.
See my avatar above.

Supposively, a sword, dagger, knife, machete would fair so much better in detering spirits. And if you smear the blade in the feces of pig or cattle it's even better. Maybe rock salts loaded in 12ga shells, but firearms supposively do not deter them other than living creatures.
