Default New member from Stanislaus County

New member from Stanislaus County. Never grew up with guns, but I always wanted to add it to my list of things I'd gotten into. As crime has gotten worse around where I live, my wife and I feel it's time to prioritize getting guns over most other things.

Kids are still continuing music lessons and one is still getting braces this year, but a big screen TV and other "wants" are getting pushed out further (hopefully our tube-based TV can still last us a few more years - we're one of those rare families without CableTV/Satellite, and with only one TV which we all watch together in the same room when we do watch).

We enjoy camping, and I enjoy biking and hiking with the kids, and just recently kayaking on the great rivers around. Many of the places we go are outside of cell phone service. I've always been fortunate, and sometimes just wise to avoid situations, but I also know there still plenty of folks that aren't "all there" which could cause harm. I'm not so much concerned for myself, but for my wife and our two daughters. My two boys and I are pretty confident, but it only takes a few extra thugs or a weapon to tip the scale the wrong way.

I very much appreciate the GC letter list for my county. It seems I'm fairly blessed as we have a really good Sheriff who has really turned the corner on CCWs and gives them out liberally to anyone asking. My wife and I really should have applied a year or two ago, but hopefully we're better late that too late (or never), but it's hard to do so when we were struggling to save for a second car (I was taking the bus, but we saved enough to buy our second vehicle cash - no debt for us) and keep the kids in sneakers without holes and such. Looking over at my youngest sons Vans with holes poking through in a few places right now... I gotta get that boy to wear 5.11 boots (they last me forever).

It's not an insurmountable amount of money, but it looks like between the fees, training, a personal firearm for each of us, etc., we're going to be out $700 or so a piece (or more). I'm again very blessed in that we just had wage increases and I had an annual promotion on top of that, so we're planning to allocate the extra funds to save for this need. I really feel for the folks who are struggling just to get by and want to feel safe taking their kids to the park or to the bike trails.

I mean seriously, in the last year we've had a mom sexually assaulted in broad daylight in the park, a schoolgirl groped on the city bus by a just-released sexual offender (nice that there were some upstanding homeless men who took the guy down), and more gropings by the city bike trails. This is in broad daylight - in public.

For Good Cause, I'm just going to list "Personal and Family Safety" and list the Modesto Police New Release website

Let's see, story 1, story 2, story 3, story 4 - yeah, plenty of crime near where I live.

I remember the first house I bought, I was constantly calling the police to try and get issues in the court I lived on dealt with. Admittedly, it was in the worse neighborhood in town (still is - but we moved when the market was going up, and we needed a second bath and third bedroom). The police would tell me, "Why do you live here? You need to move." Uhm, yeah, not so easy when you're just starting out and have a kid and one more on the way.

I'm tired of that attitude of moving and running. While I don't enjoy confrontation, it's time folks stood up and said "Enough!" I think all of us who can financially afford to get CCWs and be armed should do so and stand up for our communities. Call the police, do the right thing to not be vigilantes, but in the meantime stand firm and not back down to intimidation or just staying silent when folks are outta line.

Hah, sorry to get going on a rant or two, just needing to vent ;-)

Welcome fellow Stanislaus County resident!

I hear EXACTLY what you're saying. The whole area, from Salida to Delhi and Oakdale to Patterson, has gotten a lot worse in just the last couple of years. People everywhere are getting more desperate. Basically, the whole county is teetering on the edge of the toilet.

Glad your wife is with you in your defense-related decisions.

Just a suggestion regarding your good cause: Use "personal protection" or "self defense." Unless you have it on good authority that your statement has worked, I know for a fact that either of these will get your permit. If you haven't made an appointment with the SO, do it RIGHT now. A family member who is applying says they're booking into spring 2014 already.

If you haven't taken your class already, check out Valley Defense. It's a solid outfit.

(If it wasn't for the crime issues, I wouldn't mind otherwise).
I thought the same thing about being "upside down," but depending on how far upside down you are, things may not be as bad as they appear.

We're working out our California Escape Plan as you read this, which includes selling two properties. I thought this wouldn't be possible in the near term given the price of homes, however, I was ecstatic to find out that even though there are multiple foreclosures in our immediate area and comps are sucking, foreclosure rates are way down and home inventory is REALLY, REALLY low at the moment and this is leading market prices to rise. My long time Realtor is saying he's seen homes in the $150k to $250k range come up as much as 25% in the in the last 75 days. Homes under $150k and over $250k have come up, just not as much.

Nearly all homes coming to market are garnering multiple, well qualified, full price offers within days of listing and those that are remodeled or aren't trashed in foreclosure are considered golden.

Prices aren't at 2006 levels, but they're also not at 2010 levels either. Might be worth checking out and it'd only cost you a phone call... you may be able to get out for close to what you paid, depending on what that was, of course.

Good on you. In the last two years, we've had two home invasions and a murder less than a 1/4 mile away and we live in a "good" area of the county where crime is low comparatively. We've taken the same approach you have.

Stay vigilant.
