As far as keeping the spot low key vs. getting the word out to responsible and clean shooters that are willing to take out a bit more trash than they create I would argue that it should be considered whether or not such a policy of secrecy would really be effective.

You mentioned that in the past previously "secret" shooting areas have become widely known, and those areas in turn have been shutdown for being either too unsafe or too destructive. Why should we assume that a policy of secrecy for this area will ultimately have any different results? The relatively close proximity of this location to nearby towns and the already high levels use(and misuse) would indicate that word has already gotten out and without the clean up efforts of responsible shooters it seems entirely likely that the site would have already been shutdown.

I would argue that in order to preserve quality and quite frankly convenient shooting locations such as this one for the long term instead of trying to maintain some sort of "secrecy" on such a public location it would make more sense to continue what this thread was started to accomplish. To further develop a good relationship between local shooters and the BLM as well as other concerned political groups and to foster a strong community of dedicated, responsible, and safety minded shooters to not only use the area reasonably, but also to maintain a level of cleanliness in the area and to deter illegal and dangerous activities.
Seriously, you had to create a new account to tell me that?

Okay, mystery person, who I assume is an avid bodyboarder, I completely agree with you, but I only wish all shooters were indeed "dedicated, responsible, and safety minded." That said, a proactive and consistent presence by competent shooters/Calgunners in Perris does cultivate a favorable atmosphere. Furthermore, letters of praise from BLM representatives such as Donna Chirello due to fellow Calgunners making a diligent effort to preserve a BLM shooting spots is extremely encouraging. While my initial posts were weary of undue attention, the attention is obviously directed in a positive manner.

I made a new account because I just discovered this website shortly before reading this thread, but thanks for the welcome and I'm glad you agree with me!

Was up there yesterday, they have the backside closed off now and marked with 'private property' signs.

The BLM must have sold some land in the last few months, lol...

Its looks good, but its not the same. We've all been funneled into a sort of dusty ridge... A lot has changed in a short time out there.

Thank you for the cleanup efforts. We took out our trash and what little there was of other peoples.

The road is actually on private property. Or property not mainted by the BLM anyway. I looked it up.

The BLM land comes right down to it, but doesn't cover it. I suppose you could hike around.

I have talked with the field office a few times about it. They told me yes you can shoot back there, but they would like everyone to stay in the same spot.

Its a little easier for them now that the road is blocked.

I'm heading out this weekend with a group of boy scouts to do some cleanup and then shooting. We'll clean up what we can.

Hey there Darryl Licht, not sure when the next one will be. But i would say we need another one in the next month or two. We had a great turnout with the one back in April. Just keep checking the site here to stay updated.

hmmmm. not sure. i've been out there a dozen times and i've met the same ranger every time out... 7' older looking, tall big guy. looks like a bob. on his loud speaker half the time. i hope it doesn't get shut down. everytime i'm out there i do my part and whatever else i can load. it's unfortunate that everytime i am out there it just looks worse. almost everytime i've had a neighbor who don't speak a lick of english either.

I did talk to them today, BLM did not put any signs up but they could be from Riverside County, that area is also habitat area managed by Riv. Co. and they might have done it. BLM said the only designated shooting area is the first 600 yards or so when you first pull in and that they have not been enforcing that. They would like pictures of the sign and what is the distance from the pavement?

I used to shoot back there before they put up the 'habitat' signs. For some type of rat I understand.... Obviously a worthy goal. You can see the old turn outs on Google Earth.

Then they put up the habitat signs, and everyone moved down past the marker, now the road is blocked by large stones and there are 'private property' signs up.

It seems like who ever owns that land is finally exercising some control over it. The public land runs parallel with and stops about 100 yards short of the road per PLSS/geo communicator.

I would estimate the stones and sign to be about ten feet back from the road. Just far back enough to nose in and keep the back tires on the road for a three point turn.

Going from memory the sign reads 'Private Property No trespassing, hunting etc...' Something like that.

When I head out there this weekend, I'll take some pictures of the signage and see if I can estimate any distances. I'll also take some pictures of the condition of the shooting area so a determination can be made for future official cleanups.

I was out at the blm spot today breaking in my 1911 in the same area i was in a few weeks ago and the place was horribly littered with 12ga hulls and steel AK/AR rounds. After spending a half hour raking up crap, i saw a couple lowlifes drive up in beat up old s10 and park 100 yds or so away, get out and start tossing camping sized propane tanks all about the place as targets, and one big 5 gallon tank! Fortunately 10 minutes later before they had even started shooting the ranger with the dodge showed up to make his rounds and found them! He sat them all down in the dirt and proceeded to check their weapons (running them probably) then pulled out his ticket book and i assume wrote them all up for littering. He then made them pick up the tanks and put them in his truck then followed them off the site!

I was up there today infact, looked clean compared to how it use to be. I took some time to pick up trash and all the spent casings. I took my cousin out with me today and we had a great time. We left at 1 and saw the Ranger coming in to check out the area. all in all was a good day shooting.

I took a group of boy scouts up there yesterday. I ran into a fellow calgun member, although I forgot his name. For those of calguns who were there yesterday, we were at the area near the entrance, had 2-3 pop up awnings and were shooting black powder. We picked up 3 trashbags worth of glass, casings, and other trash people used for targets. After we were done shooting, I talked with the boys about the need to be good ambassadors for the shooting community and stressed the importance to clean up after ourselves. I then pointed out the targets that others had left behind after we had just finished cleaning up the area.

It looks like at least the 1st shooting area could use a concerted cleanup effort. I wasn't able to check out the rest of the area.

I'll post some pics of our efforts once our designated photographer forwards them to me.

Hey Madsend,

Great job cleaning up the lower part with the Boy Scouts. I was the one that talked to you briefly in the morning. Anyway, my area 1/4 of the way up was full of cardboards, boxes and other junk. We took two big trashbags down.

Let me know when your heading up there next time. I'm usually in Burro but this place has the long range distance that Burro does not have.

SaD Guy- It was nice chatting with you in the morning. I certainly will PM you when I take another trip out there. While I was there I tried to enlist a few groups that were around us to help out, but they were content to watch us pick up trash. At least one of the groups cleaned up after themselves. One didn't and left their targets behind.

The older tall ranger's name is Art. He is pretty grumpy sometimes. I've tried being friendly with him. I'm sure nothing would make him happier than to get the whole place closed. I wouldn't doubt it at all. I tried warning everyone that this would happen about a year ago and only one guy responded to my post. The whole area is an agenda 21 re-wildng zone. I have read reports that specifially list target shooters as the number one danger to the precious kangaroo rat. The reports also detail a strategy of using BLM to enforce a no land use policy. Obviously BLM has sided with us so far, but it is only a matter of time until BLM has had enough of dealing with the human filth that frequent this site.

It seems more efficient overall if we make sure to clean up more than we bring each time instead of waiting for a dedicated date.
Not to say it's one or the other, though.

Well if all the shooters did that when they went there we would never have to have a clean up. You are kind of preaching to the choir here. All the members here that have volunteered at the cleanups do a good job of picking up after a day of fun, they have worked hand in hand with other members and have a sense of pride because of the job they have done. It's the other 5 or 10 percent of people with no respect that spoil it for the rest of us.

Shoot I was there yesterday from 5-7:30pm and didn't pay attention to any new signage, but will have to check it out. We went up the hill about 3/4 way to the top and there was some cardboard/plywood left on site but overall it didn't look terrible. We took a couple trash bags worth back along with all our spent shells.

I really hope it isn't shut down, that would be a huge loss for all of us. Honestly, I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks for a permit the same way you do in glamis, etc.

Oddly enough, to date I have never been approached by a ranger.

Seems like one of these would at least make picking up all the steel casings a little more fun.

There was a sign that a ranger took down right when you pull in off the pavement, from what people are saying I think it got put up again. I was at the BLM office Friday and they said no one has the right to place a sign on their land. The chunk of BLM land is only 1/2 mile wide going east to west and the trails go off on to property owned by others. Best bet is to get a BLM map to make sure you are not trespassing.
