Default Best .40 cal Carry Gun

What is the best .40 cal carry gun out of the box?

I'm looking at the G23, the S&W M&P and the Ruger SR40c. Does anyone (seems like a dumb question here ) have an opinion or another gun I'm not considering?

I have a flawless PT 140 but would like something different. Going to sell it to fund the new one.

I'm leaning Glock as I've heard the trigger is good stock, I can't make radical alterations such as trigger jobs, and I can change out the barrel to shoot 9mm to save a little dough on ammo.

But I want to consider most all avenues...your opinions are appreciated..

I carry my G23 frequently and love it. I do carry my G27 more and love it even more! I actually am much more efficient and accurate with my 27 now then my 23. If you are going to carry it daily, i would definetly lean towards a G27 due to the shorter grip. It makes a difference in "sticking out". Make sure you get a good holster. Crossbreed or a Kicktuk. I have both and prefer the kicktuk. I would like my Cross breed more if it were combat cut tho, the leather is more plyable.

The M&P has a fine stock trigger, it was better than my glock 19's trigger before I installed a $40 sear. After the $40 apex hard sear it blows the g19 away. NTM, the ergos are better on the M&P.

Apex hard sear:

You can also put a 9mm barrel in the m&p40 and it will work.

Good luck with your choice. You can't go wrong with either.

Like I said, trigger alterations aren't an option unfortunately..the last thing I need is for the court of public opinion to come back and bite me like they bit George Zimmerman for defending myself against an assailant.

The m&p felt ok, so did the g23..just undecided on which route to go..thanks!

If you ever want to try the G27 and the G23 side by side you can try mine. I go to the gun room frequently and the lincoln range.

mp40 is the best 40 cal i have been able to shoot...and ranks very high on my list of favorites. i don't know if i would carry the full size mp40 and have not shot the mp40 compact, but the full size is an awesome piece...along with the apex goodies.

i have my first kahr on order...the p9. if the p40 feels anything like the p9 you might want to check them out. they feel really nice in your hand.

i'm just not a glock guy, so i don't have anything to say about them...but they are notorious for going boom every time which is something you want in a carry piece

From your choices, I would go with the G23.

The only choice is the one you feel most comfortably accurate with.

If there's a draw, go for whichever looks prettiest. All the choices are light enough that weight is a lesser issue.

Trigger alteration may not be illegal but if you wind up in court because of a shooting the prosecutor will probably use this to his advantage.
Who knows what a jury would think about the fact that you altered the trigger on your gun because it wasn't fast or slick enough.

That is awfully generous..I don't get down to EG much but I'm considering joining the Lincoln Gun Club..I'd like to take you up on that if you're out there sometime.

I haven't considered the Kahr just because I don't know anything about them. Thanks for the suggestion..I'll look into that.

What I meant was that Zimmerman has been vilified in the media before he ever got a trial for shooting Trayvon Martin. The media made up the facts to sell ratings when the reality was very different.

If you do end up shooting someone in self defense and it's found that your weapon had been altered, you'll be vilified in the court of public opinion, as well as a court of law, as someone who altered his gun so it would be easier to kill someone.

If it's stock, you don't have that problem. I think this is part, if not all, of the reason the SO in my county says no alterations to your carry firearms.

I carry a Glock 27 and Glock 30 on my CCW. You might also look into a Sig P239, P229, or P2022. Any reason why you just want a .40? The Springfield EMP is a nice carry gun, so is the Kimber Super Carry Ultra. I have a CCW in Placer County also and they don't allow ANY weapon modifications like a laser (even if it comes with it such as a Ruger LC9), trigger modifications, etc.

I highly recommend the Lincoln Rifle Club. It's $10 everytime you go to the range there, but if you sign up for a membership it's $60 unlimited use so it's a deal.

I carry a Glock 27 and love it OWB/IWB. I've tried a Glock 23 and found it much harder to conceal. The grip pokes my shirt out and the muzzle is visible when I lift my arms when carrying OWB and extra few ounces make a difference as the day goes by.For me the key to comfort and concealment is a short grip along with the short barrel. I know a ton of guys carry full size 1911's and such but it just doesnt work for a tall skinny guy like me in t-shirts/shorts.

Of all the .40 guns I've shot, p229 absorbs the snap pretty well, way better than it's big FS brother p226. The gun was design for .40, so there is less muzzle flip and it's a bit heavier at the grip.

Cant go wrong

S&W 610:

Takes .40S&W and 10mm.
As time goes on I'm more and more partial to revolvers.

Looks like there are a lot of folks pumping up Sig Arms, I had not considered them but will definitely take a serious look.

Lincoln is about $95 a year with your NRA membership. I'm not pro or con NRA but have never been a member. I know I should join. $95 per year is still a great deal for what they provide.

Thanks!

Pete...my primary carry gun is an SP101 with a 3" barrel. I have a Ruger LC9 for summer carry. I have a .40 cal already but will be selling it to partially finance the new purchase. I like the .40 caliber a lot and would take that on road trips when I can just stick it in my center console and then lightly carry it if I need to.

Revolvers are just 100% reliable with good ammo.

The Glock 23 and 27 are both great. I carry a 23, but I have done the "short grip" modification and feed it with a 27 magazine so it doesn't print as others have mentioned. It has become my main carry piece.

I really like the FNX 40, but I don't carry. I like the way it fits and shoots for me.
