I am considering becoming a Front Sight Member also. I live in coastal SoCal and I am trying to determine whether it is realistic for me to be doing this between job and everything else. I'd love to make it a semi-regular thing and go one weekend every other month or so. For those who have been to the classes could you tell me:
  • What time do classes usually start? E.g. could I catch one Friday afternoon working only half day and stay Saturday/Sunday?
  • How long is each day of classes on average? Is it a full 8 hour day of training from 9 till 5? Are there any breaks?
  • How demanding is it? Considering it's a 4 hour drive each way does it make more sense to arrive the night before? If the classes end late in the evening is it better to depart the next day rather than same day?
  • How much of it is classroom theory vs. hands-on training?
Thank you very much for all your input! I am very excited about the possibility, I am just trying to determine how feasible this is in reality.

I've only been to the 2-day handgun and 2-day rifle courses, they are Friday-Saturday (all day long). I drive up on Thursday and leave Sunday.

Classes start around 7-8am, and end about 5-6pm. There are a couple bathroom breaks and an hour long lunch break.

Definitely need to be there at 7:00 the first day of class, so you need to stay out there the night before. Pahrump is almost an hour away from Vegas, so more like a 5-hour drive than 4.

It is pretty hands-on training. Except for the CCW course and things related to the CCW course, almost all of the class time is spent on the range. Lots of time shooting combined with "lecture / discussion" sessions introducing each topic.

There is the option to camp by the front gate, so that could save you some time if you can do that. I've only attended the 4day handgun and can't speak to the other course yet.
I was there M-Th in early November so the weather wasn't too bad. I suspect it can be even more difficult during hot days. You will want to be fully rested, hydrated and sharp.

Realistically you could drive home on the final night rather than stay.

I'm going next week
The 22nd for 4DDHG
I will be driving and do the camp out side the gate thing Thursday night
Then have a hotel in pahrump the remaining nights, I have 2 kids with me else I'd camp the hole time

Oh
I just got a notification that Front Sight has their own ammo shortage and to provide as much if your own ammo as possible, I think it said 9mm and 223 is most short
Anyway if your going soon get your own ammo and don't count in getting it there

Don't forget you can get ammo from the guy who sells ammo from his truck on the corner on the way to front sights entrance.

I bring ammo as a back up but buy ammo for the classes from the truck guy. Only problem i am having is 5.7 for my wifes ps90.

I15 to 127 is quickest.

You'll probably save 20-30 min.

Not much to see but more direct.

I didn't see that guy with the truck at all this week.

As for ammo at FS, Stockpile Defense will only sell you ammo (posted round count) for the class you're taking. I heard they have a roster to check.

I checked only prices for PMC .223. On Wed., price was $14/box. On Mon. and Tues., it was $11.50/box.

Wonder where truck guy was? Maybe he's out of ammo too? As asked before, I find it faster the back way, off at Baker.

I was just sort of pre-prepping for class, mainly inventorying ammo
I'm happy to find
I can complete 2 days if class without reloading a single bullet into any magazine, if I switch out partial mags on day 3 I could probably make it most of that day
Yes, I am taking 25 glock 23 mags, downloading all of them to 10 rounds
I was thinking about switching out from my glock 23 to a conversion to 19 on day 3 and I could go that day on 9mm mags without reloading mags, day 4 I could switch to my 36 and finish, never loading a single bullet into a mag the entire course
So yes among those 3 guns/calibers I have 60 magazines
And I'm not even counting my 33 rounders or 50 round drums

I may just switch to my 27 on day 3, then my 36 on day 4, I haven't decided yet
I'm also seriously contemplating using only my 23 converted to 9 the entire course, since I have more 9 than 40

Also contemplating taking only 10 round mags so there can be no issues on return with all my normal ones

Decisions decisions

Probably a very slim chance, but if anyone was signed up for the 4 day Prac Rifle on 3/1 and you won't be going, please let me know. I'm trying to get in on that class and it is booked solid. I thought I had signed up and I apparently didn't, and accommodations are already made. Foolish mistake.

If you have to change accomodations ask if you can postpone instead of canceling. There may be no penalty that way. I was able to postpone my campground reservations twice with no penalty.

No kidding. I even found someone's spot to take and they still said the late fee was to pay for an additional range officer's salary...

Guys, thank you very much for the detailed answers to my questions from last week, much appreciated! I actually was able to purchase a diamond membership from a very friendly calgunner. I got a "request received, will be processed in the order it was it was received" kind of message. How long does it usually take for the membership to activate?

The last few transfers I've done have taken two weeks
One before that took three weeks
Looks like they are catching up
Id guess two weeks from the time you got that 'being processed' notification

At least now you can get in a class within the two week window. Also I heard that these fees can be paid with Ambassador dollars.

I had some early January membership transfers take 4 weeks to process. I have current memberships transfers just going into 3 weeks now. Note that if you have your membership number, you should be able to call in and schedule a class at Front Sight using the printable Course Application form, while waiting for your membership to activate.

Great idea, do you know anyone who tried this? The people who got memberships from me are averaging 3 weeks.

The member who sold me his Diamond membership copied me on the transfer request. I took 4 weeks before FS replied.

OK, so 2-4 weeks is normal, got it. Guess I should start prepping in the mean time, think I will start off with a handgun course so I will be getting the recommended holster and so forth. I am contemplating buying the whole set of dry practice manuals but sheesh, that stuff ain't cheap. I mean I want to support the cause and all but damn.

I picked up the book when I went to my first 4DDH. I enjoyed it a lot. Mostly a collection of goofy things people do, a little of his own history. I found it a fun read.

for the manuals, I would suggest buying the CCW course, I think I can get it for 250ish, and it comes with the complete set of manuals, then you can sell the ccw course itself (if your a member) and recoup your cost.

$28 per manual? Or $28 for the entire set of seven?

oh gosh, the wind is terrible.
i'm quite wind burned, and it was a cold cold wind too.
those 15 meter line shots are not easy in that wind.
all of our equipment is gray, most peoples malfunctions are a result of the gray grit in their guns, and them not cleaning them at night, i cleaned mine day 2, and still day 3, its almost completely white again., then also, any oil of course collects the dust a bit easier
at the 3 and 5, after the first few shots are fired on the left side of the lines, all the dust and grit flies down the line, while your doing your after action of course, so it flies right into your face, if youve made your shot already, if not, its flying into your eyes as your trying to take your shot.
I ended up changing my mind on the gun I use, I came all prepped to use my glock 23 and had 25+ mags loaded up. then decided to use my 9mm conversion barrel, and found I only brought 3 glock 19 mags, but, its going well, after 3 days, ZERO malfunctions using the conversion barrel.
well, done babbling for now I suppose.

Hang in there. They should sell shemags in the Pro Shop. You've got combat conditions at no extra charge!

Here's to blue sunny, wind free skies for your skills test tomorrow.
