Default LEO's i need some advice on neighbors rooster......yes rooster lol

My neighbor behind me has a rooster that is constantly crowing and letting the neighborhood know he's there. I wouldn't mind if he did his cock-a-doodle-doo once in a while but it's all day, woke me up this morning at 3am and the morning before at 5am.

What can I do? I live in richmond and am not to sure about laws regarding "farm" animals. I called animal control one day or the nonemergency # and they said any type of complaint or letter given to the neighbor would include my name and address, that it couldn't be anonymous. I don't want them to know that it is me making the formal complaint just incase of some type of retaliation or whatever they'd do.

What are my options ?

Not a LEO, but just FYI that Solano County is having its own crackdown on roosters disturbing other people. Permits are required for a specific number of roosters, including evidence that the owner is a "breeder." There's an allegation that one guy in Dixon is raising them for cockfighting.

I take it that your neighbor just has the one rooster and not 50?

I'm not sure on your local laws, but there could be municipal codes your neighbor is violating. Try a google search. If your local LE has a code compliance officer, you can contact him.

Contact RPD and ask for the code enforcement person. I'm pretty sure they have a MC for such things.

If it was my neighbor, he would realize his rooster was gone one day but that I would have a smile from having some good home-made fried chicken the night before.

My uncle did that once. This rooster kept waking him up. One day, it's gone! And we had fried rooster. My mom was ticked that he used her kitchen knife though. LOL!

Try using google and "city of richmond california farm animals"

You will get http://www.richmond.ca/__shared/asse...w793220409.pdf

See page 6 poultry.

Thumbs up

Roosters are VERY prized by the Chinese; they make an excellent stew.

Got any friends who own a restaurant?

A story, but: Don't Do This! This was a different time, and a different place than now.

...but this reminds me once when I was staying with my great uncle as a kid. Very old school guy, farmer/mechanic, friendly and nicest guy you would meet, congeal to others; he went through a lot during the depression and wwii.

I might have been 8 years old and one morning we were having breakfast and from behind the newspaper he told my great aunt that "neighbor got a rooster it seems" since we all knew it woke us all up. He said he will take care of it, and that was all he said.

Next morning I heard the crack of a .22.

There are some municipal codes concerning farm animals within city limits. Check your locally laws and hopefully you live in the city. Yes, a myth that roosters only crow at dawn. (all day and night)

Cold Mountain -- that was a scene to remember -- and I bet it made an impression on the chicken too!

All these rules and regs in Calif...what we can have...what we cant have...blah blah-blah blahblah...whats next....a "Rooster Roster"?

Sorry...I could not resist...but seriously it (the rooster crowing) is also a violation of your peace per 415PC even if it (the rooster) is allowed to be there....no different than a chronically barking dog suffering from separation anxiety when its owner is gone.

Talk to the neighbor about it. Get their phone number while you are it. When the rooster wakes you call them and tell them all about it. If their critter is waking you up then spread the joy around...

I live in the foothills on 5 acres. Someone from the bay area bought the property next door and rented out the house. We complained twice about the new and very, very noisy dog that was waking us up at all hours, once with the renter and once with the owner. The other house is over 100 yards away but this dog bark was echoing all over the mountain! After the initial complaints I would just call the owner at 2 or 3 AM when the dog woke me up and tell him about it. I was very polite, but firm. He got to hear the dog over the phone and his response was "OMG that's loud! I'll take care of it." Problem was solved.

Most likely not because it is not a grandfathered rooster and the owner is not LEO. The beak is not detachable except with a tool and as long as it doesn't crow more than 10 times, it is not an assault cock under the Roberti-Rooster ban.

Time to change that off roster rooster into a featureless build.

Had the same problem here in Santa Rosa. Talked to Animal Control, they were useless. Wound up making a complaint to the Zoning Dept. The roosters vanished.

call code enforcement, NOT animal control. ANY animal, regardless wether it is a rooster or a barking dog....IS subject to noise abatement.

+1. I have the exact same problem. I have called my neighbor at midnight and 5 am, per his request that I call him if it wakes me. The rooster seems to go in a shed at night now.

I have a question somewhat related to this. I don't hear my neighbors roosters when I am sleeping but they seem to think they need to "free range" the chickens (in the very urban part of anaheim) and said Chickens as often in my Front yard setting my dogs off as they eat grass seeds and god knows what else out of my front yard.

Occassionaly I let my smallest dog out after them to chase them back home but its really becoming bothersome.

I attempted to speak to the owner about them but my Spanish isn't that advanced...

soooo anyone want to come over for fried chicken some time this week

animal control or code enforcement is your best bet to shut that thing up, just tell them that the droppings are breeding flies. : )

I keep stumbling on this old thread while looking for solutions to my own Richmond rooster problem. Would love to hear OPs eventual solution. Those of you suggesting shooting the animals are extremely unhelpful. How would you feel if someone read this and decided that was their only solution to the problem? They would say "calguns told me to do it". I am so #$%$#^ fed up with the noise I fantasize about shooting up the entire coop. You have no idea how annoying this thing is.

I have tried calling code enforcement. They got pissed I kept calling them saying they dont deal with noise issues. They only thing code enforcement is good for is if they dont have their coop up to code. They referred to me the cops.

I called the cops numerous times and they try to wash their hands of it saying it isn't their problem because its not a human making the noise. What? A noise is a noise. So @#$%#% pissed off at RPD, whom I've always had good dealings with.

Finally, there is animal control. They seem like your only bet. Complain and leave your address and get another neighbor to do the same. Only then will they start to take action. Slow as a dehydrated turd, but action. They will send out a letter to the owners and then they have 2 weeks to do something after which they start getting fined. They key here is to a) leave your name and address and b) get someone else to complain because you need 2.

I struggled with the option to leave your real name, but it comes down to this: you are going to have to do it if you want to get rid of the noise. If you are really worried they might be gangster cockfighters, get animal control to investigate that while staying anonymous. IF they turn out to be just oblivious cockheads, then leave your name loud and proud and start the process.

Good luck brother. We shouldn't have to deal with this %#$&( in our homes. I suggest getting an air horn and blasting them when you can't take it anymore. It lets off a lot of steam and lets them know that you are listening and P.O.'d.
