Default Which County Most CCW Friendly (out of 5 counties listed)

Thinking about moving and want the hive's opinion on which of the following California Counties is the most CCW friendly.
  1. Stanislaus County
  2. Merced County
  3. Fresno County
  4. San Benito County
  5. Monterey County

I am good to go in most States with my non-resident permits but feel naked at home in California.

My wifey and I just renewed our permits again in Fresno County. The new online system is super easy to use. We completed the renewals online Saturday and we both got our approval notifications this morning.

Sheriff Mims is VERY pro 2A. Check her letter to Biden...

If you're narrowing it down to those specific counties, I honestly do not know.

I live in Shasta county. Relatively easy to obtain CCW here.

I got my Stanislaus County permit before their new online automated system came online so I can't say how long it is now but it is much better then it was a few years ago. My renewal was done online, notified two weeks later I was approved, took my class, then went in and turned in my certificate and picked up my new permit in 10 min. Everyone is pretty much guaranteed a permit if you aren't a prohibited person. But, if Monterey County is on your list I think I might like living there more then Modesto.

The only problem with Stanislaus is getting an appointment to drop off your application. Time from application submission to permit was approximately 4 to 6 weeks when I originally applied and 2 to 3 for renewal. YMMV.

Mine took about 3-4 months here in San Benito.

Is the CCW process the only consideration for moving?

Fresno before online application took me 4 moths but that was several years ago. My last renewal was approved in less than 24 hours after I submitted the required info online.

Thank you everyone for offering your input. Looks like Fresno is a great county for CCW. I looked at the online application process and oh my gosh what a breeze to go through it. I’m not ruling out any other counties at this point but Fresno looks very good.

Default CCW Permit

I have had my CCW in Stanislaus Co. for almost 8 years and in the beginning it was a pain in the butt but it has got easier each time I have renewed it.

I did a private party transfer in Monterey Co. in January and they were shocked when I pulled out a CCW. The guys at the gun shop said there were only like 35 CCW’s issued in Monterey Co.

I got my CCW in Monterey County last year. I was surprised at the speed of the process. It took me roughly 4 months. The online application process was easy and straightforward. I know nearly a dozen other Monterey CCW holders and they have all had varying results. Some have been done as quickly as mine, and others have taken over a year.

Although I have no experience with the other counties, I will also say that Fresno is a breeze. Both PD and Sheriff are very pro 2A, either of them will issue for self-defense.

I would put Monterey County in the "Friggin' Unfriendly" category.

County Requirements:
https://www.montereysheriff.org/ccw/ccw-procedures/
Quote:
Background Investigation: The background investigation will include a home visit, contact with employers, co-workers and neighbors as well as any other persons of interest. The fact that an applicant is applying for a CCW is not confidential and may be divulged during such contacts.

Psychological Assessment: A Psychological Assessment will be administered by Law Enforcement Psychological Services. The applicant will be given appointment information after successfully completing the Personal Interview. Applicants are responsible for paying the $150.00 fee to Law Enforcement Psychological Services at the time of their appointment. Results of the assessment will be sent to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
https://www.montereysheriff.org/ccw/
Quote:
At some point during your application process, a background investigator will contact a sampling of your neighbors, family and co-workers to determine your suitability to carry a concealed weapon. We will advise the people we contact of the reason for the contact, and ask them if they would recommend you be issued a CCW permit.
That, for me, would put Monterey County in the "Friggin' Unfriendly" category.

Not sure why they still have this listed on their website. Only contact that they had was the references I provided. No neighbor, employer, or home visit. Also no Physch Eval either.

I read somewhere that the Physch evaluation was done away some time ago.

Out of this list, I would go with Fresno. That being said, it might behoove you to consider Madera County. There are new homes 10 minutes from Fresno. Madera has almost no restrictions that are not required by the state and I believe it is no limit to the number of guns you can put on your permit.

That said, there is some outdated information about Stanislaus here. They now use an online application and the whole process is down to less than 3 months. A few years back it was almost a 2 year wait.

Downsides to Stanislaus: There is a 3 gun limit, you cannot carry at work, and the training classes are relatively expensive (only about 5 trainers on the list)

Can you elaborate on “you cannot carry at work?” I will be moving to Modesto in the near future. I am self-employed. Are you saying I can’t carry while on the clock?

They automatically put it on your permit. If your boss writes a letter saying you can carry at work, then they will remove the restriction. I have been told (but do not know for sure) that self employed people get the restriction put on and then have to write their own letter to get it removed.

I have a "real" job in addition to my business. Mine says I cannot carry during the course of employment at my "real" job.

JDoe, at a certain point you should change the focus to other characteristics of the county you move to, like crime rates, amount of gang activity, etc, all the while keeping in mind that any of these characteristics can change with time (and mass immigration....)

Slightly OT: anyone know how long Fresno Co has been pro-CCW? Was it that way prior to Mims taking office in 2006?

I can’t say for sure as far as FSO is concerned. My employer received his CCW over 30 years ago at age 21 or 22 from Fresno PD.
