I just got off the phone with them, the lady recommended waiting until about a month after my LiveScan to book my course. Because it is only good for 6 months. She said if it goes directly to the sheriff it can be done very fast if it goes to a background investigator then it could take some time from there. So good helpful advise and I guess it's just hurry up and wait right now. July can't come fast enough

Yea but my boss isn't letting me take a Friday off and he won't let me switch a shift. So hopefully next Friday I'll be able to pick up my Mod'd permit because I put in my time off request form last Friday

I think this is bad advice. There is no guarantee that after your LiveScan the DoJ will respond within any time frame. They can take as long as they want. They have taken 3-4 months. If the SO then has a staff shortage, as occurred before (potentially because of health or FMLA issues), it could be another 3-4 months before you are investigated and approved.

Probably 90% of the time what she said is ok, but it is the 10% that you will be outta money and time and have to retake your class.

Waiting until the investigation call eliminates the DoJ time variable, and the SO never takes more than 5 months after it comes back from the DoJ.

Please don't waste their time calling when it is written down already. On the CCW Forms website, look at CCW Policy 20160822, and see section 218.3.2 section (a.).

Also, it is 6 months from your approval, not when you want to go pick up your CCW. If you don't get your training done within 6 months of approval, you start all over again.

Thank you for the input, that sounds like what I might do. I'll wait till I get my approval and then schedule my class.

I have used the CCW as my second form of ID (plus it exempts you from the HSC/FSC).

Slixx, have you never used the ccw as an ID form or are you asking if we can use the new style ccw card as an ID form? please clarify.
Because your address is also on the new ccw card, it's on the back, top row.

The shops will get the message, eventually. Of course it'll take nearly a year or so, but within 2 years, there will be no paper. Until everyone's existing CCW permits, both paper and CC versions exist.

We were originally told we had to carry both. That other LEOs would recognize the rice paper, but not necessarily the CC. However, the Sheriff wanted his deputies to be able to verify our CC (which has our photo).

Good news. Lonestargrizzly, when you did the modification did you have to upload any documents like your ID or proof of residency?

I put in for a gun modify on Dec 10th and it still shows "assigning to processor shortly..." as the status I was hoping for a quick turnaround but its not the case.

most likely everyone did this at once --- trying to look at the positive side - You CAN do a mod now - just in the recent past it was a Flat NO...

The proof of residency is only necessary if you are modifying for the purpose of changing your address.

I had my original application appointment in May, and then got a call saying I was approved in October. I haven't had any call for an interview, is this how it normally goes? I have my class scheduled for February.

I had the same thing happen to me. Appointment in June and a call 1st part of November that I had been approved and to schedule my class. I'm taking the class in 2 weeks. Also never received an interview call. I was quite pleasantly surprised it had gone so much quicker then the posts I'd been reading. One thing I did was put everything on the application no matter how trivial it was, maybe this gave them no questions to ask or my life has been so boring it would have been a time waster for them.

I didn't have the background investigator call either. Maybe they only call if they need to verify something or have questions about it.

Sounds like right now they're skipping interviews unless you flag something. Based on annecdotes by seamonkey and bassin. As well as my own experience and a couple people I talked to in person who are recently approved without an interview. My dad did his process about 1.5 years before me his interview was anout 3 months after his appointment and comisistef of a 60 second phone call.

I wasn't even able to fully complete the application. I didn't have my exact info for traffic violations. Still they left me a voice mail saying you're approved to take a class and come back to see us.

To whom it may concern.

I regret to inform you that I have resigned from the Madison Society as both an instructor and as a member. And to my understanding so has every other instructor and half of the board.

The cause for this was impropriety on the part of the president of TMS.

Virgil McViker, president of TMS, recently decided that the CCW instructors were being paid too much and that the classes offered were wildly too expensive. There were two meeting to discuss this issue and it was clear in these meetings that his opinion was not widely supported. As such Virgil held an unscheduled, closed door meeting, during business hours and gave no one else notice of it. In that meeting he misrepresented a clause from the Nevada guidelines for Non-Profits as a rule and used said rule to bar the board members who did not support his agenda from voting. He pushed through his agenda and reduced instructor pay to $25 per student.

Then two weeks later at the members meeting he informed everyone of the new plan and said that instructors were now going to be volunteer only and would not be paid (No meeting on that one, just his decision). When questioned on this plan and how it had come about he quickly tabled the discussion and refused to take further questions on it. No vote was held, no motions made nor any sort of meeting rules or order adhered to.

While I applaud the concept of using volunteers to teach the class and providing classes cheaper I am also a pragmatist and have a great deal of experience working with volunteers and now what the reality is like.

The reasons I have resigned are as follows:
1. I will not associate with an org that does not follow its own bylaws and/or makes them up as they go along. This is not a club, this is a registered 501 C 3 that currently has $80k in its coffers, money donated by CCW students. And now the president is acting like this is his own private company and can do as he pleases. Virgil has made it clear that he intends to run TMS as his own personal club and that is a loss for the entire 2A community.
2. Despite his promise that this was done to be able to drastically drop the price of classes the fee was only dropped $35 to $165. That means that TMS share increased from $100 per class to $155. (The rest is a donation to the range).
3. Virgil said in the Nov meeting that he intended to "Corner the CCW market" and that he "doesn't care if it puts all the private training orgs out of business". I do not feel it is the place of nonprofits to "corner" markets or to use their status to put other men and women out of work While I'm all for fair competition, to me, this smacks of monopoly by gaming the non-profit system.

The reasons I can no longer support their CCW program:
1. Virgil, despite not having taught classes in 20 years, according to his own admission, and having zero understanding of the current system, has appointed himself as the lead instructor. He is not however listed as an approved instructor on our application with the sheriff.
2. Virgil taught the first class in January and to my understanding did not use the approved curriculum, nor the approved test. And he reduced the stated range time from 8 to six hours, again this was his own choice and not following TMS's approved class plan.
3. He intends to use volunteers from this last class to teach upcoming classes. I am truly at a loss of words over this one.
4. When confronted that he is not an approved instructor, that none of these volunteers are approved and that he was not using the approved class plan or tests he responded that he was not worried and that the sheriff told him in person, 8 years ago, that he was ok with the Madison Society doing whatever it wanted.

For full disclosure I was paid when I taught classes for TMS. $70 per student. Recently the sheriff has been working through a large backlog and classes have swelled in size. My largest paycheck was for a class in December and was for just over $1k. While this may seem like a lot of money understand that TMS does nothing for these classes and that the lead instructor is responsible for everything. Marketing the class, sign ups, finding a location for the class and range time, setup, tear down, tests, documentation, etc. Each class is 16 hours, mine were over 8.5 hours over two days. For this I would normally put in another 3 days of work each month. Also this backlog should only last another month or two and should then go back to the previous levels. My average class was 8 students, half of whom were renewals. I was averaging about minimum wage. I have a full time job as COO for a video game company in silicon valley and I also run a successful micro publishing company. The pay for these classes barely covered my costs for ammo, training, certification and instructor insurance. And I was giving up one full weekend every month. I have a wife, three young kids and a labrador. Honestly they are thrilled to get that time back.

So take what you will from this, and I will be more than happy to help anyone through the process of applying for your CCW. However I strongly suggest you seek training somewhere other than TMS when the time comes.

Applied for Mod last Monday and picked up my new ccw on Friday!! I was very pleasantly surprised. Hope one day to be allowed 5 guns like Sacramento is allowing, still, happy to be in a ccw friendly County.
