Default Ventura County CCW Wait List (status, updates)

I saw the wait for an appointment in OC was 4 months, so I called Ventura County Sheriff and the earliest appointment to submit an application was Friday 2/28. 1 week.

I was just over at the Ventura Sheriff's office today to pay my $80 fee and drop off my CCW class certificate. My fingerprint was taken, but I'll need to come back some Tuesday or Thursday by appointment to have my picture taken for a CCW plastic id.

Maria was excellent and polite as usual. She's a great asset for the Sheriff's office.

I was going to list a bunch of guns but had a conversation with a retired captain who thought it might make me look like a gun nut, so I'm down to the three they give you space for.

I'm not clear on how qualifying with each works, and suppose more guns could entail more "training" fees if qualifying is beyond the required 16 hours of training.

ElDub1950 says this about qualifying: "It varies by instructor, but generally it's like
• 12rds at each distance of 3yds, 7yds and 15yds
• You will demonstrate 1 emergency or tactical reload during each 12rd course of fire
• The time limits for each 12rd course of fire at each distance will be as follows:
o 3yds - 15sec
o 7yds - 30sec
o 15yds - 45sec
• To pass you must achieve 85% of your shots (31 out of 36) in the large center thoracic cavity hit zone (14"x16")"

BTW, in OC they're currently booking appointments in NOVEMBER!!!

So where do you get the "training" and what do they consider a tactical or emergency reloading?

You do presume incorrectly.

The amount of guns has nothing to do with the duration of the training, with the exception that you will spend more time on the range, as you need to qualify with each gun.

Adding one later is a PITA, as you will need to pay an instructor to certify qualification, and pay a small fee to the Sheriff to have the license amended.

Approved trainers are listed within the CCW application that you download from the VCSD website.

I have never been required to do a tactical reload during qualifying, so I can't help you with that.

But I imagine if you can drop a mag and insert another (or use a speedloader if you want to use a revolver) that you would be fine.

Question is? Using hi-cap mags or with only 10 rounders
All my pistols that will be listed on the CCW app are pre-ban, purchased before 2001 ban.

Default Tactical Reload...

The tactical reload consists of the instructor putting a dummy round in your magazine so you don't know when your gun will just go "click". At this time you need to perform a quick clear (Tap, Rack, Bang) finish the magazine off, eject the empty magazine; Load a new magazine & finish shooting.

Ok I wasn't sure if they were doing that or a one handed reload or what have you. So many different people consider so many different things as "tactical" is just wanted to verify. Thanks.

So last question, on the appointment to turn in the app do they have a sit down with you then or what is the purpose of the appointment? I know there is a "sit down" talk with the detective but thought that was later on after some back ground checks had been completed.

I applied 2 years ago and was denied for my GC statement. The appointment was and still is (from my understanding) just for your fingerprints and back ground check. You pay them. They take your prints and you leave. About 2 weeks later ( for me) I got a phone call from a detective who asked for the interview, which was about a week after.

At the interview we went over my addresses. I brought in proof of residency in the county and my Id. We went over my good cause statement, my background checks, my ticket I had , and then just personal stuff like what I did for a living. He said he liked my statement and he would approve it but doubt the sheriff would.

2 weeks later I had my denial letter.

Since the San Diego Co./9th circuit ruling, has anyone been approved for CCW in Ventura County? I don't want to waste money on fees only to be treated the same as prior to the ruling.

TIA

It's a long process. We won't know for at least a month.

Yeah, I figured as much. I was just wondering maybe someone that had already been in the middle of the process when the ruling came down.

Very cool thanks 19K.

R7MR7M: I don't know about now but my buddy that got his 14 years ago it took 3 days shy of a year for him to get it. Though it took months between the time he applied, to getting a back ground then 3 months for the sit down and so on. From what 19K said it looks like the process is a bit faster.

Got my appointment for the 28th. Seems they are getting more then usual according to the lady I talked to. according to KNX today OC has received more appointments in the last week then they did all last year. Over 500 so far.

You're right regarding the list - it's been removed.

I just filled-out the application a month ago for my renewal, and I could swear that it was still there then.

I've emailed the Sheriff's office and asked them to provide the current list.

I'll post an update if they respond.

No clue. That's the list that they have me. I picked up the application on the 13th the same day as the ruling. They are not changing the application. You just need to put "self defense" as good cause.

As of 5 minutes ago they had April 1st and onward available. Due to work schedule Im now on the docket for 4-10-14!!

I did my Livescan yesterday at a separate location just so I can speak intelligently. Today I'll do the DMV check etc.

you did your own live scan? the initial appointment isn't your interview.

Im a commercial pilot. Checklists, check recheck, pre flight, post flight, check check check.

I did a Livescan AND a fingerprint card to send off for my FBI background check as a precaution AND to be able to speak intelligently while in the interview. I want to verify that we all have the same information sitting in front of us and ZERO surprises. I will also have a copy of my Drivers Report, FICO, professional licensees and FAA background check, tax returns etc.

I am going into this like a well prepared attorney. Its important to me and I have the free time to gather up all pertantant proof to my Good Moral Character. Will I need it? Probably overkill, but its better to have more information than less.

That's really smart. I took a copy of my DD214 and some of the official paper copies of my medals for extra gmc proof
