Default Where do you carry your gun in your car?

Carry both IWB & OWB. IWB is most uncomfortable in the car. I have been told that LEO prefers you have the gun on your person even while in the car, is that true? Otherwise, does it need to be concealed inside the car, center console, door panel? I have a holster that can be attached to the front of my seat, close to the floor, very hard to see if you are not looking for it. Legal?
I do keep a small gun safe, secured to the seat frame for storage when I have to leave the gun in the car.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I've never heard anything about that LEO preference. The CCW allows you to have a loaded firearm anywhere in the vehicle. I wear an Alien Gear IWB, but getting in the truck, I put it in an Alien Gear OWB that comes with a mount which is mounted to the side of the lower console near the floor.

Mainly IWB while I'm driving. I'm a fat guy but, I carry at about 8 to 8:30 and don't even feel it. Sometimes I'll toss my BUG (loaded with shotshells for snakes) in the center console or in a locked box under the seat.

At about 3 or 330. I rarely remove it while driving....

I have a 60/40 bench seat with a large flip up arm rest. This works great for me and my set up.

I have this same AG set up, never thought of using the mount in my car. Have thought about it for under my desk at work.

Kind of sounds like my velcro holster on the lower portion of my front seat, close to the floor is doable, easy to access and hard to see.

You can buy the mount separately and move your OWB between the two...

I carry IWB at 3, when driving. Very comfortable.

My IA wants the firearm on your person when driving.

How did you find out that your IA wants it on your person, did you ask?

I carry IWB at about 3:30 and I don't even notice it when I'm driving. I use an N82 holster that covers the whole inside of the gun so no part of it pokes into my fat rolls.

IWB 3:30 - 4:00. I never remove it e=while driving and don't really feel it either. Not even when I carry the big old SW1006.

Now I don't drive small import cars maybe that is the issue. There is no room for me in them much less anything else.

"very hard to see" and "concealed" aren't quite the same thing. Be careful if you get pulled over.

I appendix carry. Doesn't bother me and I can still draw my weapon while seated. I do not like arming then disarming then arming again over and over during my day. Most NDs happen when people are fooling around with their weapon.

HK P2000 in a Stealthgear Mini at about 3:30. Don't even know it's there while I'm driving even in my wife's Golf with narrow seats. If your IWB carry isn't comfortable while driving I'd consider another holster.

I place mine in the door pocket while driving.
OWB carry in the car with a seat belt on makes it impossible to get to and is uncomfortable.

I basically always have my firearm on my body. My EDC is a G43 that is usually carried IWB at about 5 o'clock. It is not uncomfortable for me at all if it placed right. I personally don't like my weapon bouncing around in the car and if I needed to get out quickly it is on my body and handy where it should be. That said on very long drives I will sometimes just place it in a clip on holster in the center console but leave my IWB holster in place so I can quickly put it back on my body. That is very rare though, 99.9% of the time it is on my person.

Mine is normally in the OWB holster at 3:00-4:00...I usually push it forward a bit to avoid having the floorplate dig into the seat leather. Sometimes, it's in the front pocket of a small pack on my passenger seat. I usually have it off-body at work since I'm in a controlled-access room with 8-10 LEOs who are all carrying and don't take the take to re-arm before jumping in the car unless I know I'm going to stop somewhere on the way home.

I still don't get OP's statement about "...LEO prefers you have the gun on your person even while in the car..." Even if true, who cares what their opinion is? It's none of their business what legal carry method you choose. What difference would it make to them anyway?

IWB Stealth Gear mini 4:00 for both the G19 and the G43, I don't even feel it when driving really. Carrying a Glock with one in the tube I prefer to keep it in the holster unless forced to remove it (schools and post office etc...).

Does it need to be concealed in the vehicle? If it's visible by someone looking in your car, does that violate the terms of your CCW?

From what I understand it must be under your control and not accessible by passengers and I would bet not visible from outside the car.

I think it does (at least according to my IA), I'm pretty sure if it's visible then it basically amounts to open carry.

LEO "preference" isn't legally binding, nor does it always transfer from one LEO to another. The LEO instructing you on CCW practices may prefer that you carry on body at all times, ensuring immediate access to the gun. But, the LEO making a traffic stop may prefer that the gun is not sitting on your hip. Make the legal choice which you prefer, then work out how you'll handle an encounter.

Your license allows you to conceal the gun; it doesn't allow open carry.

Maybe. CA case law has held that "substantially" concealed is concealed. But the statute (25400(b)) also says:
Quote:
(b) Firearms carried openly in belt holsters are not concealed within the meaning of this section.
So, make sure whatever holster you're using doesn't have the ability to be carried on a belt.

There's more background on Code and case law at the wiki: http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/in...ning_Concealed

Best.

If I am going on the road for a long drive, I will put my carry piece in a pouch mounted underneath the steering column.
2016-10-06 08.12.19.jpg

If I stop for gas or other reason I will slip it in my pocket when I get out of the car.
If I feel it necessary, I will put my backup in the pouch and carry my EDC IWB as normal.

Same here. What good is it, having a weapon for self defense that is difficult and takes extra time to draw? If a car jacker shoves a weapon in my face and tells me to get out of my care while I am stopped at a red light, I like the b etagere odds of appendix carry.

"I just toss it up on the dashboard as fair warning."

Nice. I either place it in the center console or leave it on my waist concealed. I'm in my car and don't feel that a split second is necessary for the drawing of the weapon like in a typical street or public scene.

I leave my primary holstered IWB @3-3:30 take my lil backup and put it in my center console holstered covered with a napkin or tucked under my leg grip slightly exposed. It depends on the car I'm in. I can grab the lil revolver with the napkin on it and fire it. When it's tucked it's pointing down a bit. It won't shoot my nuts off, lol.

Either option doesn't require me to clear a garment telegraphing GUN to a dirt bag with bad intentions.

The whole appendix carry deal is great for some but pointing a gun at my Cock-n-balls ain't in my cup of tea.
