Default Budget Scope for Budget .308 Rifle?

My Brother and I each recently purchased Thompsen Center Compass rifles in .308 as inexpensive, reasonably accurate bolt rifles for SHTF situations. We don't want to spend more than about $300 each for a scope. What would you guys recommend?

Weaver 40/44 is good budget scope
Nikon Prostaff is good budget scope
Leopold VX 1 is good budget scope

Price range is from $120 to $180, maybe little less if you find a sale.

I was either going to say this, or the swfa super sniper fixed 10x I think it's around $300. The Bushnell tactical fixed power 10x is also $200.

Athlon is a great budget scope

I've actually been looking at the Athlon Argos BTR 6-24x50 FFP SF. It's at the upper limit of what we want to spend but the reviews seem good and folks say Athlon stands behind their products unconditionally.

I recently bought a used sporterized Mauser that came with a Redfield Revenge 4-12. I was shocked at how nice a scope it was. They sell for about $220, but you’d never guess that looking through one.

FFP go with the PA SFP go with vortex. Vortex makes very good product backed by their no BS warranty. So cheap mid or expensive vortex would be the way to go. For a FFP scope the PA is just as good but no lifetime warrenty. I've been hearing some good things about the atibal scopes to.

Good glass.
I actually have a FF II 3x9 with the Ballistic Plex Reticle on my AR15. It has clear glass and the reticle has worked pretty good out to 400 yds on the AR. I'd like something with more magnification and Side Focus for the 308. I think in the meantime though I'll swap it over to the 308 and see how it works out since funds are low for me right now.

Did order a Athlon Argos BTR 6-24X50 FFP SF for my Brother yesterday. Will install it Monday then we will be going camping up at Lake Pillsbury for five days or so and will b able to try both rigs out on the long gravel airstrip there.

Yes and it is 3.5-10x50, which is nice, but not the BDC reticle, which I have grown fond of. Still a solid option.

That's a pretty good price - the Argos I got for my Brother was $297 and is FFP.

That's a great price! Depends if you need FFP or not. I went with the BTR since it has the HD glass and better turrets. I dial elevation with turrets anyway so FFP isnt a deal breaker. Helos is another great option for a little more

Good glass.
My choice too. Better eye box, eye relief and much better in low light than a Crossfire.

Depends on what mag you want, but I don't hesitate to put 6x max on certain .308 rifles. In that category I like the Burris RT-6 for around $300

Fixed power, I love the 10x SWFA SS... last one I bought was $260 but BF Sale.

Vortex Viper on sale is a good scope for $300 range IMHO... models like the 30mm 6.5-20x44 IIRC. Also Viper HS LR when they go on sale. Maybe a Viper HS 2.5-10x44 on a good sale.

For SHTF a fixed power scope is a good choice. I also suggest the SWFA SS fixed x10. In SHTF, you'll likely want to take shots as far as your reasonably can, so I wouldn't be too concerned about x10 being a bit more magnification than you want for short range (the rifle isn't intended for that anyways). Bonus of the fixed power is less moving parts, therefore less to go wrong. Also, a fixed power usually has better glass than a variable of the same price... hence the same price.

If you want to get variable power, so far I'm very happy with the Falcon M18+ with a FFP B20 reticle, but I'm a long range newb. So take that for what it's worth.

Yeah, it's a drive to get there but it's nice if the lake is full to be able to swim/cool off.. We usually make a camping trip out of it and spend at least 4 days - have stayed a week.

I'd probably go with a Primary Arms 3x or 5x prism scope. Compact and very rugged. Poor man's ACOG.

I have the 5x and love it, think it's a great multi-purpose scope for an AR, but seems like a weird choice for a bolt gun.

OP, great call with the 6-24 Athlon. Probably the best value for the money out there.

That 30/30 Duplex Reticle is great for 2-300 yard shots but I wanted at least a BDC reticle or MIL-Dot for greater precision at longer ranges.

Weaver Grand Slam Tactical 3-10x40 Mil Dot
I almost bought one when it was $350. Now that it's $200, I'm not sure there's a better scope for the money.

I remember these. How do they hold up to the new crop of scopes? Seems like a good deal @ $200. Can anyone compare to a Viper or Nikon P, M, Leupold VX-II, etc...

I own two of those rifles. Go to Walmart and buy the Weaver medium profile 1" scope rings (quads or classics) for around $9. A Leupold VX-1, or VX-2 will cost you less than $200 and have lifetime, no questions asked warrantees without registering them. That combo just can't be beat.

Talley lightweight Medium Xtended mounts / rings work great too for somethings 44mm like a Viper 30mm (replacing the gimme mounts).

SS from SWFA. Rugged, simple, and repeatable-performs box drills all day long and always comes back to zero.

For budget scope and within 600 yards, believe it or not, UTG is really bang for the buck. Over 600, I like my Athlon Helos BTR
